They always claim climate change is causing the conflicts between conservation efforts and local communities that live outside protected wildlife lands!? Just as they blame climate change on everything today remotely related to climate change? But they wont blame the bad policies that antagonize local communities and conservation efforts? And most of the policies employed are legacy-policies of colonial past that were never reformed to holistically include local communities and traditional local knowledge thereof, as equal-partners within a properly integrated land-use and land management model! Instead the colonial approach towards conservation that marginalized local communities, still being used today in Kenya and many other countries in Africa, eg Zimbabwe land crisis, continues to push local people to un-arable lands or unsuitable lands for animal husbandry next to labelling them as trespassers or poachers! And then people like Kuki and her daughter.. want to be seen as innocent well wishers who are being victimized? Bullshit!

If the land will not sustain the population, then they can move, or they can improve the land. Land improvement is expensive, but I think it is the best solution for everybody. Education and government can make land improvements. Desert reclamation is going on all over Africa and Asia. It takes years of time, which many people don't have, so a 10-year subsidy needs to be worked out.

@josephgomalo41 from my experience as a Kenyan, I can tell you that this situation is closely monitored by powerful forces in government. Never underestimate the fathomless greed and corruption of powerful people in the Kenya government, both elected officials and unelected bureaucrats, who are patiently waiting for the situation to get out of hand so they can swoop in and "solve" the crisis by grabbing all of this land for themselves, their voting constituents, and all their cronies that they owe in-kind debts. They do not care about the whites, the pastoralists, the farmers, and least of all, for the precious wildlife resources that so far have been consciously refuged here. They care nothing for the long-term stewardship of the land and its natural resources as a patrimony of the people of Kenya. Except for the obvious and world renowned game parks and reserves like Tsavo and Amboseli, which bring in huge profits for these same politicians and bureaucrats in their preserved condition, the less well know but just as precious "private" reserves in Kenya are on the grabbing list of the powerful elites. They know that these areas are off the radar of the international conservationists and are easy prey because they can just say that they are taking land from the "evil white landowners" and "giving it back" to the "rightful African owners". Who could oppose that? They know they will have the current gullible and self righteous world DEI (diversity equity inclusion) mob on their side, and they will laugh all the way to the lands offices as they grab the land for themselves and their posterity. I am sorry to sound so cynical, but I have seen this scenario play out too many times in my 60 years of life as a Kenyan. I expect this will be the same case.

The incompetence of our government is laughable. Why does land conservation have to be done by a private citizen? And why are local communities being considered bandits in their own land, while their own cattle, which is their livelihood, are dying off? Why aren't there mechanisms allowing the communities to benefit from the land while still protecting the wildlife and habitats, like the maasai in tsavo? Why is this not a public national park and open to tourism, which will open up the area and bring economic relief to local communities, who will then not have to only rely on cattle and rustling simply to survive? Again, why is this private property?

Instead of engaging the locals, "Bring more international organizations " She, together with the locals, would have reached a compromise without government involvement. I don’t understand, though, why they should own 98k acres. Can I do the same in Italy? That land was taken from the locals by the colonialists and should have gone back to them, not get sold. The locals can be educated and work on conservation together, rotating grazing areas to ensure both the wild animals and the locals survive. This cannot continue.

But people are rising now, with internet being widespread it's hard to hide the truth about continued colonialist exploitation and land concentration in the few hands (often of foreigners) This horrible system will not live for much longer (just like exploitative capitalism). They are not conversationalists, they're colonialist foreign land grabbers. I'm born and bred in Samburu, a peace champion and a youth leader and a pastrolist son. Like any other society, there are elements in Tiaty West pokot who are being financed to cause mayhem and steal cows while maiming, killing and displacing people. They have caused untold suffering. The Pokot leadership needs to educate their people on the need to abandon cattle rustling and banditry, killings and maimings. This is a retrogressive culture that is leading to underdevelopment, retardation of economic growth, lack of access to schooling, and loss of lives and it's giving a bad name to the Pokot community. The deaths in the Samburu west,my ancestral home in Samburu county are heart-wrenching. The killings of school children is spiteful. No, they should just return the land to real owners, local people. Otherwise it will end up being taken, simply. The colonialist system will not survive for much longer, my friend, a couple of more decades left on it. I'd understand though if it was given to the state of Kenya to become a Park/state Nature preserve where people can visit. Kenya and its native people should decide what to do with it, not the UN or foreign land grabbers.

I think kenya wildlife service needs to carry on the conservation efforts going forward just like Maasai mara and Amboseli .Keep out hungry private developers who might be eyeing this land from the shadows.Create jobs for the local communities, establish an animal husbandry training center , local schools for the kids , build a health center and a veterinary laboratory. This area can sustain itself by rebuilding the resorts again for managed tourism. We have many examples of similar places in kenya like Sibiloi, Nakuru, Mombasa etc. This model can work .Create jobs , revitalize the economy of the region including boreholes in select area for watering points and irrigation of vegetables and other crops in the outlying gardens ( Just like in Tsavo).

If the land was owned by black Kenyans or the Kenyian government it wouldn't make any difference. No matter who runs a conservancy. The owners would need to drive out the pastoralists from the overpopulated neighboring areas in order to protect the wildlife. As seen in this exact documentary there are no wild animals in the mismanaged barren overhunted lands surrounding the conservancy. 99% of the comments in this video are straight racist. I wonder what the comments would look like if the land would be owned by corrupt government affiliates or the grandgrandchildren of some black warrior who killed everyone in order to acquire the land 150 years ago

The issue here is overgrazing. Kuki Gallmann has done a commendable job protecting the wildlife while the raiders continue to destroy their environment. The reason they are struggling is because they are too stubborn to sell their animals when demand is high. They believe that having many animals is a sign of wealth. This boorish approach to life is what is causing them trouble.

The elephant in the room is human population growth. When Kuki Gallman bought this land in 1970, Kenya's population was was 11.4 million. In the year this documentary was produced (2022) it was 56.8 million. In twenty five years time it is forecast by the UN to be 100 million. All the while Kenya's land area remains constant. Granted, there is a material migration of rural populations to urban and peri-urban areas within Kenya for economic reasons but there is still a substantial year on year increase in rural populations who choose to stay in their traditional ranges of occupation. Private wildlife conservancies will not survive this trend. Similarly, the future of Kenya's National Parks, as a productive land utilisation proposition, looks increasing outdated and unrealistic.

I lay the blame for this whole situation at the feet of the Kenya government, past and present. Like the ranger said, if the government had the will and the foresight, the situation could be solved in a "week." If there were vision and disciplined action on the part of the government, a win win win solution could be found so the white land "owners", the pastoralists and the farmers, and most importantly of all, the ecosystem of flora and fauna on which the longterm survival of all of the rest depends, could live in some kind of symbiosis long into the future. Absent the concerted and prudent action by the government, and sooner rather than later, this land will remain a hotbed of contention and violence with none of the players emerging as winners...

I also found it interesting that the proceeds she made from the book and film, were put back into that land; another country. That benefits the region as well. I understand the people who were born and raised there… yet, I understand the people like Kuki, who are trying to improve the area. They complain about the white man and their land but they also take their cattle to graze that land, that’s been worked by someone else. What if there wasn’t that land, that has been worked by someone else? There would be no green for their cattle to be taken to and fed?

@proudmarinemomma827, and who told you the land been worked by someone else? Its the single largest private land holding by a White Family, who came and met the tribes grazing the land. Its the same attitude by white people clinging to a colonial legacy. That feeling of white saviour, coming to save the poor Africans. East Africans had been battling these colonials who refused let go of the colonial legacy. sooner or Later, it will end. Africa is grappling with populace expansion, and single childless white family is refusing to let go of a pastoral land they grabbed.

Community integration is everything. A romanticized 'I dreamed of Africa' where animals are prioritized over humans and local economics won't win. Plays perfectly into 'phonyticians' and poachers. Change tact, and work with the genuine local community for real wealth empowerment...not just the whole social maneno...you'll need to cede ownership to win and keep the space as whole. Totally anti 'chop and sell'...we've got enough car washes and flats and I'm sure none of the pastoralists want this too. Militarizing won't work.

Climate change has nothing to do with the conflict in these areas. It's simple - unsustainable land use and lack of goodwill from the government. There's money pouring from all directions targeted at everyone's personal interests, so the person with the least amount of money suffers the most and that is the people. Kuki Gallman is just a custodian of that land - she is hodling it for special interest groups. Even she lacks the goodwill to resolve the issues in Laikipia. If today the land in North Easter became green all of a sudden these white settlers would repeat and replicate what they did in 1925, and that is just fact!!
