A new power in Morocco, the Almohads, seize North Africa and then take Southern Hispania. Their armies are massive and they launch campaigns against the Muslims of Al Andalus and the Christian Kingdoms in the north. A major confrontation between Islam and Christianity is inevitable. At the battle of Alarcos, the Christian King of Castile, Alfonso VIII, is taught a new lesson in humility.

Ibn Al-Athir said about this battle and what happened next ( They met on 9 sha'ban (19 July 1195) north Cordoba ,at the castle of Rabah and fought a fierce battle ,fortune initially went against the muslims but then it returned against the Franks (Spaniards) who fled in a most terrible rout the muslims were victorious over them (...) the number of Franks (spaniards) who were killed was 146,000 and 13,000 were taken prisoner ,the muslims took much booty (...) among the muslims about 20,000 were killed Abu Yusuf pursued the Franks when they fled in defeat he saw they had taken the castle of Rabah but had left it in fear and terror ,he took it and then returned to Sevilla As for Alfonso (8) ,after his defeat he shaved his head ,inverted his cross and took to riding a donkey he swore that he would not ride a horse or a mule until christendom was victorious.He assembled great hosts ,newsof which reached Ya'qub who sent to the Maghrib Marrakech and elsewhere ,calling people to arms without complusion ,a great volunteers and enlisted men come to him "-They met again in battle in Rab'i 592 (Feb 1196) and the Franks (Spaniards) were badly defeated ,the muslims seized as spoil what money weapons and mounts they had with them ...Ya'qub then marched to Toledo ,which they put under siege and attacked fiercely ,He cut down its trees and carried out raids on the surrounding districts where he conquered several fortresses and killed the men ,en-slaved the women ,destroyed the houses and razed the walls When the Year 593H [1197 AD] arrived ,He marched out into Frankish lands and acted as he had on the first and second occasions ,the Franks found their territory squeezed and they were humiliated .their princes gathered and sent asking for peace .He granted their request having first intended to refuse wishing to persist with the JIHAD until he finished with them . However ,he received news of Ali ibn Ishaq ,the Almoravid from Majorca ,that he had perpetrated the dreadful deeds in Ifriqiya .He therefore abandoned his purpose made peace with them for 5 years and returned to Marrakech at the end of the year 593 [ended November 1197])

Hello "Flash Point History". Thank you for being impartial and having no Judeo-Christian agenda behind your series, unlike many Orientalists. As a Moroccan who love middle-ages history , I just want to make a notation. The term: Caliph or Khalif in Arabic means the "Successor". As in the Successor of the Prophet Mohammed. Historically there could only be one Caliph at the time. (there was an aberrant time when we had three caliphs: The Umayyad Abd-Arahman Dakhil in Andalousia, the Shia Ismaili Caliph in Cairo, and the Sunni Abbasid Caliph). However Moroccan Kings have never used the term Caliph. They called themselves Sultans. Which means the ones with power. After the Abbasid empire collapse, the term Caliph was later used by the Ottomans.

With hindsight being 20/20, it would appear as though Alfonso VIII was an impatient leader. Funny how his loss soured his relations with other Christian kingdoms although he was clearly at fault not waiting for reinforcements: Sancho [VII] arrived late at the Battle of Alarcos in 1195 and thus ruined good relations with Alfonso VIII of Castile. The ensuing confrontation resulted in Sancho devastating Soria and Almazán and Alfonso accepted the Peace of Tarazona. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sancho_VII_of_Navarre

Nice work with this video, don't usually see this knowledge of spanish medieval history in english videos about the subject in KZbin...It was very pleasent to listen to it. The only thing I am not sure about is that the almohads could control all the peninsula If they hadn't commit that mistakes, the situation in 712 B.C. was far more complicated and didn't end with the total control in the peninsula by the muslims. Some regions are very dificult to control or to have an ocupation force without the favour of the inhabitants. And at the time of the almohad invasion the ideology conflict between islam and christianity was very developed. So I doubt that in the north of Castille and Navarre, or even Aragón, would tolerate their invaders.
@zdhim2714
@zdhim2714 5 жыл бұрын
Duende Satírico At the time, the only thing that could be done would be the unufication of Al andalûs and its survival to modern day, but with the almoravids there was a possibility of reversing the reconquista. If Ibn Tachfin took Toledo he had the possibility of mopping the floor with the castilians and effectively endin the reconquista, the ideal scenario would be an occupation of the city of Castille, that would fuck some shit up.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 5 жыл бұрын
You might have been right - the Almohads, despite their power never seemed to commit to the Iberian peninsula. They had a poor logistical supply and I doubt they would have been able to push deep into northern Iberia
@locuraromantica
@locuraromantica 5 жыл бұрын
@@zdhim2714 Like Flash Point History said, to revert the Reconquista you need centrlized effort and good logistics. The absence of this is not a casual phenomenom, is due the social structure in the Middle Ages, due to feudalism. It was difficult to asamble an army for long periods of time because you always had the ambitions of generals and lords, always conspiring to achieve their goals. To be a monarch or a emperor meaned not to trust very much your vassals. And like I said before, christian population at that time wouldn't tolerate dominion from Al-Andalus, so the resistence against forces in the north of Spain would be something to consider. If they conuered Toledo it would be a painful blow,yes, but a deadly one?You also need to push forward north to León or Burgos, possible candidates to stablish the royal court. The king of Castille now has a good reason to distract the nobles with a cause, reconquering Toledo, to unify them and also take some prestige with a campaign against a common foe.Nobles could pillage and get ransom without any remorse because the enemies are muslim and not christian and they don't have to calculate very much the political consecuences of their actions.So..They take Toledo...Yes,that wouldn't end in my opinion the reconquista.You also have to deal with three other kingdoms, Navarre,Portugal, and Aragon.
@locuraromantica
@locuraromantica 5 жыл бұрын
@@zdhim2714 Also the survival of Al-Andalus to the modern day was very compromised after the battle of Las Navas. And in the XIV century the Kingdom of Granada was playing defensively and participating in the fighting between the christian kingdoms trying to mantain it's importance. I also hardly doubt due to the improvement in wargear along Europe and the changes in the late medieval european societies that could resist the push of the Iberian Kingdoms. The Fall of Granada was the killing blow of Isabel of Castille when they needed no more money or support from the muslim kingdom of Granada and religion and royal birth rights were the only way to create a solid union between the diferent kingdoms.
@locuraromantica
@locuraromantica 5 жыл бұрын
@@zdhim2714 And last but not least, the economic growth, the demographic growth of the northern kingdoms and of Europe in general and the develop of the cities were increasing resources for the kings. Even If you loose men in a battle. Generally speaking Europe is growing and pushing it's limits forward. And also the conection of the christian iberian kingdoms with the rest of Europe was good, like it was seen on the battle of las Navas.

What is it with this underestimation of your opponents. They knew these guys were good fighters but they did not scout to know the true size of their force. I mean what major fails on the part of that idiot Alfonso the 8

Isn't that the downfall of all armies ? - to be over confident? Ask the Romans at Cannae, the British at Islawanda, the Germans at Moscow, or the Persians at Salamis. To be fair, I think Alfonso VIII wanted to stop them at the pass. But if you listen to my podcast - the Almohads actually stopped to regroup and even gave Alfonso some time!

Muslim ustads sometimes telling people about this history in certains context, like teaching history in religion or teaching religion in history, there's no problem as long as they're not doing that in purpose of supporting their group, btw oops 11:45 a man got his body splitted
