Watching the "Unledded" Page/Plant special when it aired was a downright mystical experience. From the opening notes of "No Quarter", with just the two of them on the hillside, it was amazing to hear the songs you knew filtered through different cultural sensibilities by the people who knew them best. I believe Robert and Jimmy opened the ears of some of their fans to different types of music that night that they may not have considered before. And all from a pair that would have done just fine playing the songs in their original form. They took chances, detours, flights of fancy. Bravo.
@klbax638 жыл бұрын
I agree watched it when it aired and saw them when they toured. I thought the arrangements went right to the root of each track exposing Zep as the Godfathers of World music.You could always hear the middle eastern and Celtic influences on Zep III,IV,Physical Graffiti and Presence but hearing it with these arrangements took it to another level one of the best concerts I've ever seen still talk about it to this day

For those who have an issue with the young lady who sang opposite of plant in this version, one has to remember that it is his song and he and Page are free to experiment with it any way they want. So they put an Indian spin on it; so what? Life would be pretty boring if we all did everything the same every day. I'm glad they took a risk, and I don't find her irritating at all.
@CarolineMartin10 жыл бұрын

@mikeeagen772410 жыл бұрын
OK so we want to split hairs, do we? Yes, she is British, born and raised, but from her own website we learn that . . . "Najma Akhtar, vocalist, composer and actor, has been at the forefront of the World Music scene for the last two decades. Even though born and raised in England and a graduate in Chemical Engineering, Najma has remained rooted in the music of India, he ancestral home . . . Najma has proved to be a successful and versatile artist and is renowned for using modern jazz influences with Indian vocals creating a beautiful fusion of eastern and western styles. Najma always brings her own musical heritage into the spotlight while eliminating all musical boundaries. This led to the release of 7 solo albums and also the opportunity to have artistic collaborations with some of the world’s most influential and credible musicians . . . Although she did not receive formal training in Indian classical music, Najma taught herself the harmoniums, learnt basic vocal technique with Ustad Naeem Solaria and receive guidance from other prominent South Asian classical artists . . . Based in London in the late 1960s, Najma’a father set up a successful printing business that was connected with the Indian Film industry (known presently as Bollywood)." . . . so while she is indeed British, if you don't think the influence of the music of the land of her ancestors is present in that rendition of "Battle of Evermore," then you aren't terribly knowledgeable about either Led Zeppelin or Indan Classical music, and probably both.
@CarolineMartin10 жыл бұрын
I'm incredibly knowledgeable about both. She's doing a sort of free-form fusion based in something kinda sorta Indian, which is fine. I do miss the lovely lyrics. People often think kashmir is somehow 'based on indian music' which it's not, says the person who's lived in india 12 years and studied its classical music
