"The Battle of Fort McHenry" (2011) - Re-enacting Retro - The Star Spangled Banner

September 12th - "Defenders Day" - is a longtime legal holiday in the state of Maryland, in the City of Baltimore and surrounding Baltimore County. It commemorates the successful defense of the city of Baltimore in September 1814 from an invading British force during the War of 1812, an event which led to the writing of the words of a poem, which when set to music a few days later, became known as "The Star-Spangled Banner."
A new series of some rarely or never before seen classics that either only aired once or where short lived and available only to a select few at the time. We hope you enjoy. The fort only fired on the British for awhile until the Brit’s sailed out of range of the smaller guns of the fort. At that point they used mortar ships and rockets. The tattered battle flag was lowered on the morning and the garrison flag was raised. So this video, while fairly accurate, has some amount of sensationalism. That said, I serve 26 years in the Air Force serving under that flag of ours and I would have died if needed to protect anything or anyone under its protective cover.

Well made documentary about the origin of the US flag, capturing the fighting spirit of the Americans and the imminent danger that came from the British to the city of Baltimore. Just on a side note, towards the end of the documentary Alaska is shown as being part of the United States. At the time of the bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814, Alaska wasn't part of the US yet. It was purchased from Czarist Russia in 1867.

Most Americans don't know there were three stanzas of the poem. There was talk of changing the National Anthem because Key was a slave holder. That's how divided we are as a Nation. So do we do away with the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution? They were approved by slave owners. Slavery is a terrible thing. It still exists in other forms. So who do we blame now?

The city sank ships to prevent the British from getting close. You can still see the wrecks to this day. The British never made it to the earthworks at Patterson Park. Their advance came to stop at soldiers point in Dundalk. Near the modern day poop plant. This is because of rain and the choke point. Lastly, the British were squad wiped in their eastern shore diversion which did not work. The battle was decided when Cpt. Parker died in Caulks Field. Prior to the landings in Chrisfield. Sir Frances Scott Key only wrote three stanzas and finished it later while drinking in a bar in downtown Baltimore, and the fellas liked it so much (because most of the volunteers were printers) so they printed the poem in the papers and it took the country by storm.

I assure you that flag was not standing that erect. By the time the fort could be seen the Flag was barley "up." Those that came before us used thier bodies and last dieing breath to keep that Flag up.

"In Britain’s effort to control the world’s oceans, the British Royal Navy encroached upon American maritime rights and cut into American trade during the Napoleonic Wars. In response, the young republic declared war on Britain on June 18, 1812. The two leading causes of the war were the British Orders-in-Council, which limited American trade with Europe, and impressment, the Royal Navy’s practice of taking seamen from American merchant vessels to fill out the crews of its own chronically undermanned warships. Under the authority of the Orders in Council, the British seized some 400 American merchant ships and their cargoes between 1807 and 1812. Press gangs, though ostensibly targeting British subjects for naval service, also swept up 6,000 to 9,000 Americans into the crews of British ships between 1803 and 1812. Some of the impressed sailors were born in British possessions but had migrated to the United States, while many others had attained citizenship that was either in question or simply could not be documented." War of 1812 was a totally different war from Revolutionary War. It largely was a byproduct of the Napoleonic War, Britain's War with French during Napoleon's rule. The points of contention between Britain and US were British seizing Americans at sea and forcing them into military service in the war against France and an American desire to seize what is now Canada from the British. The US declared war on the British in 1812 and not the other way around, and hostilities started when Americans invaded Canada. Right before the fighting started the British agreed to stop seizing Americans at sea, but US rebuffed the overture and attacked Canada, then British territory. The Canadians and British stopped American invasion, even though British basically sent their "B" team to fight because they needed to protect their homeland from the French(Napoleon). British brought the war to US, I'm guessing to draw American troops out of Canada, likely thinking the best defense is a good offense. The war went back and forth for two years until a peace deal was made close to Christmas, 1814. The British chief peace advocate in ending the war was Wellington, basically saying his country should declare victory and go home since they still held Canada and trying to conquer American territory would most likely fail. Wellington likely thought British had to many issues close to home. The battle of New Orleans was fought in January before news of the treaty reached the warring armies. It was a decisive American victory elevating future president, Andrew Jackson to fame. That same British General Wellington would lead the British in their decisive victory over Napoleon at Waterloo a few months later in June, 1815. So it was good for the British to have War of 1812 over. The idea that British wanted to "retake the colonies" just doesn't make sense, especially at that specific time. They were in a war of survival with Napoleon. The end result is that US and Britain have been with peace with each other for over 200 years. Canada, therefore remained British, and in years leading up to American Civil War it would become a refuge for runaway slaves.

@@q.b.3828 YOU are the one that's crazy and don't know history. Revolutionary War basically ended with surrender of Corwallis's trapped army at Yorktown, VA. Peace treaty was signed in 1783, and War of 1812 was nearly 30 years later. Just ask any British, Canadian, or even American historian. Though one problem with wars is that they take on a life of their own above and beyond the original issue. You called me crazy, even though your original comment revealed you didn't know the basic history.
