I am an American who has lived in the Rocky Mountains of the western U.S. for 81 years. I visited Gettysburg about 40 years ago. It is truely hallowed ground. I have been haunted by that battle site all these years. You have captured the spirit of that great battle and the meaning of it as the nation of the United States. Thank you.

My ancestor was in the Iron Brigade “The Black Hats” (2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin, 19th Indiana, 24th Michigan) Went into Gettysburg with 1,886 officers and men. After the first day they had 730 My ancestor was in the 24th Michigan. They fought in Herbst Woods against the 26th NC. At one point they were 20ft from each other. 24th Michigan had 496 officers and men, lost all but 99. 137 sets of brothers in the regiment

@@DiD86 Culps Hill, a Confederate soldier died storming land that belonged to his family. I forget the first name but I do know it was his families farm. Most of the senior officers knew each other intimately. Besides West Point they served together. Before the war the entire U.S. Army was 16,000 officers and men.

Why blame Jesus? As far as I know Jesus never supported or ordered an unconstitutional, uncompensated federal "taking" that would bankrupt an entire economy/region of a nation. For example, if you pass legislation ruling that most farms that receive rainfall are "regulated wetland" and therefore untillable and worthless - you can expect way bigger trouble you bet. You gonna take something on that scale, compensate accordingly. And while you're at it you might consider the "40 acres and a mule that was promised". Freeing a significant segment of a population and leaving them in hostile territory without providing some form of reparations seems to me the height of bad manners at best. Abolitionists apparently had a champagne agenda and a beer budget.@@DiD86

I had a bunch of cousins in the NC regiments. Many of my third cousins on my grandma's side were there. On my moms side a 2nd cousin was in the 47thNC. And was captured on the retreat back over the Potomac at falling timbers/rivers.

Your reading of Lee’s letter to his Wife about his thoughts on suffrage gave me chills, and I listened to it several times. It brings to light that we were in our infancy as a nation, that there were strong principles on both sides, and that this dreadful conflict was inevitable.

Also, if you ever have the chance to visit Antietam, I highly suggest it. Gettysburg, like the battlefields around Ypres, Arras, The Somme and Verdun is a place to remember some very brave men. A couple of minor points. The first person killed by John Brown was a free coloured man and the assault on the building was let by a Capt JEB Stuart, people may remember him iin a different context. A great video, thanks - and I'm British.

Love ya did, but my home is in petersburg and near Richmond. My Cherokee family was "resettled" because those of color weren't allowed in the new union. Fort Lee was just changed to Grigg Adam's. Being from Texas originally, I knew Lee's role in the Mexican wars. I loved hearing the first bit, but started to feel that old sadness. God bless you and cant wait for next episode and hope it's not about the trail of tears . Cute southern accent dahlin!

Brilliant, great to see all these old photo's of the Generals and their beards, keep up the great work, I feel the antics and death of General Custer coming ever so closer. The big question about Gettysburg is was there a boot factory involved as stated in the Columbo movie called Grand Deceptions?

Got to love Ambrose Burnside’s astounding ‘stache! 😂 Custer was a very arrogant character, it’s just a shame that his personality took the lives of his men with him! Yes Custer was the rock star general of his day using Native Indian women as hostages, and getting his men so against him with his arrogance they would sabotage him, but it's a great story especially from the Native Indian perspective, if only they had listened to Sitting Bulls advice!@@DiD86

To be fair to Stuart the idea of crossing the Potomac away from the main army was put forward by Longstreet with the aim of confusing the enemy and approved by Lee. In my view this, together with Lee's failure to use the cavalry he had (maybe because he didn't trust irregular troops) was why he lost the battle.

There was a woman in my hometown Hamilton Ontario Canada in the 1930s who did that to a few of her friends and sprinkled their body parts all around southern Ontario. The papers covered it in glorious detail. I think her name was Evelin Dick. Considering her crime her name it defines irony.

The large amount of bloodshed and high casualties during the American Civil War being caused by soldiers using antiquated Napoleonic tactics in conjunction with deadlier firearm technology like the rifled musket, is actually a bit of a myth. Even though the musket had a greater accuracy and range compared to the smoothbore, it takes a great deal of training to hit a target anywhere past 50 yards or so, training that the average infantryman never received, in fact most soldiers fired their weapons for the verÿ first time in battle, so in practice officers would only give the order to fire at essentially the same range as you would with a smoothbore...and many units actually prefered their smoothbore muskets over the newer rifles, like the famous Irish brigade for instance. They would load them with Buck and Ball, basically a couple buckshot behind a musketball, which wasn't particularly accurate but is devastating at close range.

Had the battle of Shiloh in April 1862 gone in favor of the South, things might have been different. Grant career would have probably been ruined and over. The south was winning in the eastern theater up to Gettysburg, while in the west unfortunately cuz of Grant the south was losing, but has Shiloh been lost by the north, it’s one of the “what if’s”

Nathan B. Forrest, excluding him to another shot in between his legs, i think about around 30 horses in his employment for the CS were shot, one of the greatest or the worst ever, remember the killing of the native black americans at Fort Pillow, I don't know what to to think about him. I don't know about those people, may they rest in peace. I'm not interested in American history, to be honest. But, even so, what about the "people", presumably not covered by Lincoln's "of the people, by the people, for the people", who had been there before any of Lincoln's kin? They hadn't been all exterminated yet, they were "unfinished business." What about them....? (May I be forgiven for spoiling the atmosphere.)
