My great grandfather fought in this battle. He never spoke about it after the war though so my family doesn’t have many stories. The one story I have about him is that he once fought a Japanese soldier in a foxhole during the battle. My great grandfather killed him and took his diary as a way to pay tribute to him. Little known fact: Japanese General Kuribayashi, when faced with the American invasion of Iwo Jima, was ultimately faced with a no-win scenario - or as the Japanese called it, a "Kuribayashi Meru". This Japanese phrase eventually led itself to America pop-culture when the similarly named "Kobayashi Meru" appeared in Star Trek cannon in 1982's _The_ _Wrath_ _of_ _Khan_ .

US forces essentially surrounded the island so there's no way to escape or send reinforcements. He however determined to make the battle as bloody as possible. In the end Iwo Jima and Okinawa became the reminder of what would happen if USA decided to invade Japan

General Kuribayashi was a great commander. Outnumbered and outgunned by the US, yet he managed to stretch the battle out for a month. In hindsight, the resistance put up here as well as on Okinawa persuaded the Americans that invading mainland Japan would be too costly, and they should just resort to nukes instead.

Well, not really. US only had two nukes, with third on the way, but after those would be expended and Japan still didn't surrender, US and USSR could just blockade it, as japanese fleet was no more, and firebomb it for years, causing a massive famine and basically laying a siege to an entire island. They'd either break or die. Landing was never necessary, although a plan for it, operation "Downfall", was made. You must remember that mainland Japan has basically no value. It's a terrible place to live, as it's located on faultlines, has no resources to speak of and is too mountainous to build upon effectively. It's just an apocalyptic amount of mud, brought up from the depthes of ocean by tectonic activity.

My great grandfather was a SeaBee on Iwo Jima. He told this story about how one of the tunnel networks refused to surrender so they simply bulldozed all the entrances shut and left them to suffocate. Another story was how after one of the tunnels had been cleared a Marine brought out a litter of pitbull pups and when he went home on leave he gave it to my grandmother as a gift.

It was very dangerous fighting, travelling, doing anything. He also gave medical aid to Japanese soldiers, indeed, was ordered to do so so they could be examined closely for information!

My wife’s grandfather was part of the battle. He wasn’t on the beach part of the battle for very long before he got hit in the leg by shrapnel and had to crawl back on the returning landing craft. While in the hospital he met a man who was also injured from the war resulting in being paralyzed from the waste down. He offered to take him home. When he did, he met the man’s sister which is how my wife’s grandfather met her grandmother.

Indeed the effectiveness of the Kamikaze at Okinawa, and the Japanese plans for defending southern Kyushu (Operation Olympic) would have been a disaster for the invading forces.

@@vcv6560 Wasn't the code name for the eventual invasion of Japan called "Operation Downfall" with 2 invasion campaigns titled "Operation Olympic" and "Operation Coronet". One would take place in the autumn of 1945 and the other in early 1946. A few years ago I read the Japanese plans to defend the home islands in case of invasion. They should be available on line. Some Japanese high ranking military officers wanted to continue the fight even after the dropping of the Atomic bombs. There was a very good documentary on the Discovery channel about these die hard a few years ago. What must also be taken into consideration is the Russians getting involved against the Japanese in Manchuria in August 1945. In military terms it could be justifiably called a Russian "Blitzkrieg". However an American invasion of Japan would have been a daunting enterprise. American officials were predicting 75,000 to 100,000 casualties for the invasion forces. No doubt the Japanese would have used conventional warfare against the initial invasion forces but if the Americans did eventually occupy Japan the Japanese could have unleashed an insurgency on the occupation troops with the help and support of the Japanese civil population. This could have been a protracted conflict. I know I am playing the counter factual game of history but I think there is some logical merit in my theory.

There is a book called Letters from Iwo Jima by Kumiko Kakehashi, in which the author collected interviews from many of Gen. Kuribayashi's friends, family and subordinates. It focuses primarily on the Japanese order of battle, and goes pretty in depth on their strategy and tactics, but it also paints the island's defenders in a very different light from what one would expect of Imperial Japanese soldiers. Would definitely recommend reading.

Iwo Jima was one of the few, if not the only invasion of a Japanese held island where there were more U.S. casualties than Japanese causalities in the fighting on land. It is also estimated that the number of U.S. airmen saved as a result of the invasion of Iwo Jima was equivalent to the U.S. casualties from the invasion. Furthermore, what is almost never mentioned in a lot documentaries about the U.S. island hopping campaign against japan, although it is often mentioned in books about these topics, is that the success of the U.S. submarine force in the Pacific denied large numbers of troops and material from getting to the island which were eventually invaded by the U.S. I know this hampered the Japanese at Iwo Jima greatly, but I don't recall the exact number of troops and equipment which failed to reach the island for the Japanese before the invasion. I recall that for Saipan the Japanese lost at least a full division and a lot of equipment and ammunition to American submarine attacks.

My grandfather passed away two years ago. He was a naval man who piloted the transport boats to the shore. He never spoke about it, but he had many, many medals. # heroes don't brag.

Contrary to the other comments, transport boat (DUKW) drivers were given medals for their bravery in delivering badly needed supplies and reinforcement in face of enemy fire. A lot of them received silver stars. Remember, even Hitler got a medal for delivering messages during WW1.

He was a fool and his defence was futile. His entire country was comprehensively defeated like no other ever has been in human history. The Japanese never stood a chance. In fact it was the resistance the Japanese put up that made deciding to use nuclear weapons against them such an easy one.

The US bombed Iwo for 72 total days, not 3. "Initial carrier raids against Iwo Jima began in June 1944. Prior to the invasion, the 8-square-mile island would suffer the longest, most intensive shelling of any Pacific island during the war. The 7th Air Force, working out of the Marianas, supplied the B-24 heavy bombers for the campaign."

My grandfather E. Harold Blackwood fought at Iwo Jima with the 4th Marine Division. He survived and brought home some interesting souvenirs which I still have.

@@khoidang9351 Iwo Jima had unique terrain and no civilians. Japanese actually tried to use the same tactics on Okinawa. But a much bigger island, with a large civilian population, so not quite the same. And no, the civilians did not all want to fight to death and they would not have in the event of a full invasion of japan. They did not bother to defend the beaches and fortified themselves on a narrow portion of the Island that was considered the most defensible, where they engaged in attritional warfare, Japanese army units held back from any counteroffensive or banzai until close to the end. But who Japanese regular army regiments did surrender unlike previous battles, indicating that morale was ebbing at that point.

I believe Box Car had to land on Iwo after delivering the bomb on Nagasaki as it was the only landing strip within range ,and only had an estimated 8 gallons of fuel left. So in the grand strategy of things, bypassing the island was not really an option. And the severe losses all but guaranteed that atomic weapons would be deployed as the estimated casualties for taking the mainland were quickly reevaluated. A British Commander stated that every country likes to think that there forces will fight to the last, but the Japanese are the only ones to actually do it.

@Magni56 But it wasn't guaranteed that they would have Iwo Jima, let alone Okinawa when they were making the invasion plans as it was always one step closer to bombing and eventually defeating Japan. But in your defense, it may have been Okinawa they had to land on, and they would never have made it back to Tinnian as they were on vapors as it was.

Good video. I wish that just once I would see a video that mentioned the tens of thousands of lives that were saved by the Marines taking Iwo Jima. it's not only the pilots and crews, but the planes themselves that were saved from ditching into the Pacific and almost certain death. The number of airmen saved is greater than the number of Marines that gave all.

Unfortunently, that's not the case. Of the thousands of bombers than landed on Iwo Jima, only a fraction were in danger of crash landing. Iwo Jima was the equivalent of a mini D-Day in the amount of effort it took to take the island from the Japanese. No mercy on either side was given and very few of the 21,000 defenders surrendered. All for a little pork chop shaped spit of sand.

It actually worked well on the battlefield of China (which is actually impressive in scale and is the main theater of Operation of the Imperial Army) against poorly trained, ill equipped and low morale Chinese troops. It's an effective shock tactic even against Americans (that's how it got the reputation), and war cries isn't exclusive to the Japanese. German and Soviet infantry squad manuals teaches them as well. The difference here is the lack of any support firepower and the charges being too expose against fortified American positions. If the Japanese can get a tad closer to the Americans before the assault, having better firepower and a little more coordination and preparation (which is totally possible, just like Kuribayashi's final attack), the Americans would have a much harder time. Pure infantry ferocity isn't a thing to be slightly regard.
