I am aware the Seabees were uniformed under the USN org. Early in the war the organisation had been made up of civilian units which had then been placed under the umbrella of the USN, and detached to the USMC for Iwo Jima, comprised of skilled and sometimes drafted civilians in uniform. Yes, technically enlisted, and having received varying levels of basic military training. Much like the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in that regard. The use of the word "civilian" here was intended to convey that they were brought together for their technical skills, but were not really "soldiers"/Marines. No offence intended.

One marine fought in the battle of Iwo Jima & he's underage. Jack Lucas was only 14 when he lied his way into the army. Posted to pearl harbor, he accidentally revealed his real age through a letter and was grounded. He secretly boarded a ship for Iwo Jima and during the voyage, was forced to reveal himself for fear of being discovered. Fortunately, the commander in charge of the division let him stay as he was impressed with his courage. Lucas got demoted but was pleased he was given a mild punishment When he landed on the island, he fought the Japanese and spotted two grenades, jump on top of one, and buried the other in the volcanic soil. The other grenade failed to explode while the latter didn't. The blast injured his chest and was evacuated back to the US. He ended up with hundreds of shrapnel still in his body Jack was later awarded the medal of honor months after the war ended. He died in 2008 from leukemia

While the Brits spent 2 months fighting 10 Panzer Divisions, the densest concentration of German land power in the war, meanwhile for most of Normandy U.S fought trash except 3. Fallschirmjager and 17 SS Panzer Grenadier, which had 1 battalion of assault guns attached. There's a sentiment repeated of how "Shermans rarely fought Tigers", but that's a confusion as it's that U.S Shermans rarely fought Tigers. I often wonder about that. Because in reality the Japanese were in their caves and bunkers all the while the bombardment happened. They only popped out when the bombardment happened to stop. If a 74 day bombardment by heavy bombers didn't do anything I doubt an additional, what, 5 days of naval bombardment would have made much of a difference. The Japanese plan all along was to wait until the bombardment finished then rush out and occupy positions. Same shit guys on the western front in WW1 faced.

I don't think it would have helped much if they did continue the original bombing campaign, those defenders were dug in deep. The optimal solution would be naval blockade and starve them out, but Iwo Jima was too important to skip over. "Letters of Iwo jima" is a great movie showing Japanese perspective. General Kuribayashi knew what will happen if he focuses all of his resources in defending the beaches because the Americans would just keep coming. He also went to USA before the war so knew to some extent their production capability. Against a lot of opposition particularly from officers who follows the Japanese doctrine at that time, he made use of his authority and ordered his men to go underground. The General adapted to the American tactics and made sure that even the chances of winning were almost 0, they will bring down as many as they can with them.

I'm noticing a pattern between someone saying, "I bet the Japanese will surrender easily.", and brutal battles. Edit: The production quality has always been good, but I see a lot of great additions here. The great graphics, the subtle animations of soldiers going prone or throwing grenades. Great work to the team in the Operations Room!

Yeah. You just know any time a military gets confident, the enemy will exploit that.

What a great way to show the bravery of the soldiers in this battle! The Japanese were definitely the deadliest enemies we have ever faced in warfare! I'm also glad they are in an alliance with us now ! What a interesting and tragic piece of history this is ! What would the world look like if things were different ?

The Pacific theatre fighting involved relatively small numbers comparative to the European battlefields, but the fighting was every bit as brutal and as intense as the worst eastern front battles between the Nazis and the Soviets. It was like a tropical island Stalingrad every day for these guys.

These kind of videos about the Pacific Theatre gives you some genuine perspective as to why Truman felt the need to drop the A-Bombs. Considering the sheer level of casualties inflicted on the invaders on just a few small island we can only assume the level of carnage that would have been inflicted on both sides had the allies invaded mainland Japan.
@carltonace16062 жыл бұрын
Well, from my understanding of Truman, he didn't have the same respect for the bomb that Roosevelt had. To be fair though, most people when they learned about it seemed skeptical. Leahy doubted it would deliver and he was an ordnance specialist. King and Nimitz were horrified by the possible destruction. Cmdr. Layton help Nimitz get behind it. Basically stated that the bomb could be seen as an act of God, giving the god emperor of Japan a legitimate excuse to surrender. There was alot of doubt as to whether the Japanese people would surrender after the government did without an overwhelming show of power.

It should be noted that there was a radar station on Iwo Jima that tracked incoming air raids to the Japanese mainland. Repeated carpet bombing could not take it out so US boots on the ground were needed. Also the Army Air Corps needed Iwo Jima as an emergency airfield for its damaged aircraft. But Im not complaining. Your videos are top notch.
