I am aware the Seabees were uniformed under the USN org. Early in the war the organisation had been made up of civilian units which had then been placed under the umbrella of the USN, and detached to the USMC for Iwo Jima, comprised of skilled and sometimes drafted civilians in uniform. Yes, technically enlisted, and having received varying levels of basic military training. Much like the Royal Fleet Auxiliary in that regard. The use of the word "civilian" here was intended to convey that they were brought together for their technical skills, but were not really "soldiers"/Marines. No offence intended.

One marine fought in the battle of Iwo Jima & he's underage. Jack Lucas was only 14 when he lied his way into the army. Posted to pearl harbor, he accidentally revealed his real age through a letter and was grounded. He secretly boarded a ship for Iwo Jima and during the voyage, was forced to reveal himself for fear of being discovered. Fortunately, the commander in charge of the division let him stay as he was impressed with his courage. Lucas got demoted but was pleased he was given a mild punishment When he landed on the island, he fought the Japanese and spotted two grenades, jump on top of one, and buried the other in the volcanic soil. The other grenade failed to explode while the latter didn't. The blast injured his chest and was evacuated back to the US. He ended up with hundreds of shrapnel still in his body Jack was later awarded the medal of honor months after the war ended. He died in 2008 from leukemia

It's amazing what people can do when pushed under the worst circumstances. It's unfortunate that this horrific war had to be fought but it really did create a great generation that I believe has kept America together and going ever since. It seems that as every year passes we get farther away from that "greatness". I believe the generational crisis and more specifically the male crisis in America from the last 30 years will end up resulting in another one of these great wars. There's a reason we have seen crazy upticks in violence, medication for young kids, schools shootings etc.

@@menwithven8114Nonsense. That “greatest generation” was a stain on humanity responsible for countless problems. They can pat themselves on the back but it’s nonsense, especially when you consider that some of the worst people in history were part of those same generations and times and were their peers. Just typical ignorant humans, that’s what they were, and fighting wars for (ungodly) nations that act arrogantly with each other and even with their own people while aiming to rule the world is no real change (from all of human history or from Egypt in Exodus) or “honor”. Greatest generation MY ASS! No, I wouldn’t go around glorifying warriors (who are objectively illogical and shameful to humanity for trying to solve problems with weapons and violence rather than devotion to Reason (God - the First Cause)) as if they made the optimal decisions and are some sort of archetype to aspire to. The Philosopher King is the ideal a “real man” and/or Rational Man ought (logically speaking) to aspire to. Those who fight wars are their own enemy, as Reality is ONE, even if they don’t know and understand it.

More relevantly Omaha Beach (and western area of Normandy) was defended by 352. and 716. Infantry division which were just second rate static units largely made up of old farts, teenagers with minimal training, men previously deemed unfit to fight, Eastern European conscripts, various men pushed into service. All the German elite was in the East where British and Commonwealth forces were landing. While the Brits spent 2 months fighting 10 Panzer Divisions, the densest concentration of German land power in the war, meanwhile for most of Normandy U.S fought trash except 3. Fallschirmjager and 17 SS Panzer Grenadier, which had 1 battalion of assault guns attached. There's a sentiment repeated of how "Shermans rarely fought Tigers", but that's a confusion as it's that U.S Shermans rarely fought Tigers. The British Shermans didn't have that luxury to say the least, they were facing down a cycling wall of them.

And then you remember that this was real, this hell on earth actually happened. Those flags clumped together across those vast pixels of animation, were real human lives that experienced their last moment there, on that island that was lit on fire. I often wonder about that. Because in reality the Japanese were in their caves and bunkers all the while the bombardment happened. They only popped out when the bombardment happened to stop. If a 74 day bombardment by heavy bombers didn't do anything I doubt an additional, what, 5 days of naval bombardment would have made much of a difference. The Japanese plan all along was to wait until the bombardment finished then rush out and occupy positions. Same shit guys on the western front in WW1 faced.

I don't think it would have helped much if they did continue the original bombing campaign, those defenders were dug in deep. The optimal solution would be naval blockade and starve them out, but Iwo Jima was too important to skip over. I'm not saying that the additional 10 day bombardment instead of the additional one and a half wouldn't have helped, it definitely would have done something more than nothing, but by how much? I don't think it would've helped a great deal.

He had previously served with Carlson's Raiders (2/D/G) at Midway, Guadalcanal, and Bougainville before ending up in the 5th division. The fact that veterans of previous campaigns like my grandfather or John Basilone could get hit or killed is a chilling reminder of Iwo Jima's casualty rate. It did not discriminate.

@@byzantium0086 In my opinion, it would be a fair fight because of both sides could have been using combined arms (Air force, Navy, Army, etc) because the Japanese Navy were preserving their navy once they make it on a specific line. However, the japanese had a great entrenchment system, going in with great communication. I might be wrong in some parts of this comment so if there is, please let me know.

The amount of work put into this is staggering. Seeing the casualties in real time really puts it in to perspective for just how horrendous this battle was - for both sides, I might add. It hits harder when you realize that most of these guys were between 18-25. Just boys, really. And young men. An army of college age kids killing each other. Words cannot describe the tragedy of a battle like this, nor give it justice. Thanks again OR. You do all of these men a service by helping show what they really went through.

American photographer Joe Rosenthal landed on the beach with the first wave and had this to say about his experience, 'Avoiding getting hit was like running through rain and not getting wet'. I had to pause and reflect on this for a solid 5 minutes. I can't imagine what he or the other soldiers endured and I thank all of them from the bottom of my heart for their bravery and sacrifice.

"Letters of Iwo jima" is a great movie showing Japanese perspective. General Kuribayashi knew what will happen if he focuses all of his resources in defending the beaches because the Americans would just keep coming. He also went to USA before the war so knew to some extent their production capability. Against a lot of opposition particularly from officers who follows the Japanese doctrine at that time, he made use of his authority and ordered his men to go underground. The General adapted to the American tactics and made sure that even the chances of winning were almost 0, they will bring down as many as they can with them.

If I recall correctly General Kuribayashi actually liked Americans alot, and he was strongly opposed to the fact that Japan went to war with America, when he got sent to Iwo Jima he knew it was a death sentence, but he still did his job, and unfortunately for everyone involved he did it damn well

Let me just say this. As a former Marine, I was lucky enough to be picked to visit Iwo Jima with the Marines. Let me tell you, two of the biggest surprises to me was one. How hard it was to run in the black sand that was dam near ankle deep and your foot sank faster than in typical sand. Plus the first sandbar that you had to run up was like 8-10 feet up a steep incline. Notice, I said "1st", oh yes there is more. 😂😳🙏🏾 2nd, the whole island smells of Rotten eggs and no you don't get used to it, maybe if you lived there. Like badly.... SemperFi to those who came before us and Gave the ultimate. 🙏🏾

These kind of videos about the Pacific Theatre gives you some genuine perspective as to why Truman felt the need to drop the A-Bombs. Considering the sheer level of casualties inflicted on the invaders on just a few small island we can only assume the level of carnage that would have been inflicted on both sides had the allies invaded mainland Japan.
@carltonace1606

Well, from my understanding of Truman, he didn't have the same respect for the bomb that Roosevelt had. To be fair though, most people when they learned about it seemed skeptical. Leahy doubted it would deliver and he was an ordnance specialist. King and Nimitz were horrified by the possible destruction. Cmdr. Layton help Nimitz get behind it. Basically stated that the bomb could be seen as an act of God, giving the god emperor of Japan a legitimate excuse to surrender. There was alot of doubt as to whether the Japanese people would surrender after the government did without an overwhelming show of power.
