I’ve had the absolute privilege in hearing every hardship, as well as the ( hard to believe) pleasing moments. Of the siege, on hill 881S. My grandfather, Franklin ( Uncle Frank) A. Gulledge. Was a honorable CH-47 pilot as the rank of Major, in the HMM 364 Purple Foxes. I’ve been very lucky to hear the highs and lows of the men who, so fearlessly held their ground. Even being bombarded with non-stop shelling. These men, are my heroes! Simper Fi.

My trip to Mr. Dabney and his wife Virginia’s house. Long after the war. ( At this time he was Colonel Dabney.) It was an absolute, and pure understanding of the goings on at Hill 881 S. God bless you all who hold the Corps most highest values. Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

As a combat veteran myself I have always held the men that fought in the Vietnam War in the highest esteem. In many cases like at Khe Sanh and Ia Drang they were outnumbered and outgunned (except for air power) and they held there ground. The war I fought in (Iraq) pales in comparison to what these men did in Vietnam, and might I add the women who worked hard to patch up our soldiers.

Visited the site in 2008. It was overgrown with vegetation and nothing there that is recognizable. There was a small Vietnamese museum at the site detailing the “defeat” of the US at Khe San. The “victors” write the history.

You are damn right, Americans keep doing it all the time. Remember WWII? Soviets carried the brunt of it, though 'Band of brothers' and Tommy Hanks keep rewriting history, ah! and Rambo keeps winning this war at least after the 80's. Interesting.

We never fought the war the correct way. Let me explain first mistake the President micro managed the air war. He never gave the air force the free hand to bomb the enemy effectively. Many times the air force went to designated targets. Often the air force would fly over missiles, anti aircraft weapons, and other weapons. Often the designated targets were bridges, power plants and not the military weapons that were going south. The air war should have been very intensely toward the military planners and their living quarters, ports and factories should have also been destroyed. In other words destroy the enemy preventing the war materials from being delivered to south Vietnam. Second don't send soldiers into dense jungles all that was doing was we were time and again walking into ambush many times this happened over and over. Stopping the flow of war material would greatly reduce the number of casualties and enemy soldiers. These two things would have made a huge difference in the enemy's ability to continue the gorilla war effort.

Khe Sanh was nothing more as bait for the NVA. NVA took the bait and they were turn to ashes. I was only 6 years old in 1966 ,listening to the news on a radio, no Tv at date time. Sarawak ,a state in Nalaysia only have tv in 1974. I understood nothing. When war ended in 1975 I was 15 years old. I knew about the war by reading newspaper. One man, not far from my village named his son Westmoreland. Im from Malaysia.

Something interesting I read recently is that the scenario to defend Khe Sanh was put through military wargame at the time. It was found in the wargame that the Marines made a decision to withdraw and NOT defend Khe Sanh. MACV Command determined that was not acceptable, and lead to the reinforcement of the base with additional Marines, other units, and artillery. Presidential order was to hold Khe Sanh at all cost - it could not become a Dien Bien Phu. The thinking from Westmoreland was to draw the enemy in and employ tactical nuclear weapons to decimate the enemy which would achieve a significant military victory - several reasons as to why they didn't. We now know that the defense of Khe Sanh resulted in the most intense bombing in a area ever seen in the history of war. In other words, the amount of bombs dropped within a mile of the Khe Sanh combat base was the equivalent of 5 Hiroshima size bombs.

The South Vietnamese sector was manned by the 37th Ranger Battalion commanded by Captain Hoang Pho . They were forced to station outside the defence perimeter of Khe Sanh Base because the paranoid American Marines did not trusted the experienced Vietnamese Ranger who excelled themselves & stood their ground

I have wondered why we didn't destroy the communist war machine before it left the ports and factories and the enemy military forces in and around Hanoi. LBJ micro managed the bombing of the North thru target selection thus preventing the air force from destroying the war machine before the supplies started down the trails and roads into South Vietnam. This war should have been over within six to nine month. That is a fact. The quality of bombs that were dropped around k Sane would have brought the war machine in North Vietnam to a halt. Thus stopping the North Vietnamese agression on the South Vietnamese.

Glad that you get it Jaime . At that time , a line in the sand had to be drawn against worldwide Communist expansion . That line ended up being in Vietnam . Wow! The communist Vietnamese took a pretty sound ass whooping at Khe Sanh! The Marines lost 244, while the Vietnamese lost 15,000? That is a 60:1 kill ratio. That is epic! And the liberal media was working with the communists to try to tell us that Khe Sanh was a loss? What the? We handed Giap a severe ass whooping on that one.
