I've read accounts of literally the opposite, outdated equipment, and an abrupt cutoff from the only support available.. America failed South Vietnam, even though it was our responsibility from our setting up the corrupt bought politicians and government structure and failing to take care of it when shit hit the fan. And toppling governments labeled a threat to the free world with power structures in place left over from an earlier time when American interfered by supplying rebels and insurgents supporting their struggle against a stronger enemy. And unfailingly bailing out when most needed, leaving newly formed military to fend for itself being only a new governing military and usually quickly, falling to enemy forces who are usually better equipped. And better trained. South America nearly all of it, Afghanistan, Lybian rebellion and regime change., Vietnam of course, Iraq and Saddam's Hanging.. Gaddafi. We put him in power, then took him out.. There's an obvious and offensive pattern to all of America's foreign policy and conflict engagements. We should be held responsible.. Well. The Rich assholes who caused Vietnam and other invasive operations to occur and give no value to life on the ground zero. Caring only about financial gains and personal glorifying. The people who make hard decisions on behalf of America are fucking up our reputation as leaders of the free world with responsibility to wellbeing of citizens domestic and abroad.. Our elected representatives are not representing well enough to be allowed into federal locations and assume the positions entrusted them by the voting demographic. Get with it people. Government works for us, not the other way around..

The first problem is that there are presidential terms in the US and the old war policy will be changed every time you have the new president. As a young Infantry Platoon Leader, I arrived in June 1966 (C Co, 2nd Bn, 5th Cav, 1st Cav Div - 2nd Brigade) and participated in many air assaults with my men - from the La Drang valley to Bon Son plains. We did not hold land so we had to return to fight in the same area two and three or more times. Conceptually wrong. The US did not intend to annex VN. They came to help to stop the communist aggression from the north, which was backed by the Soviet Union and China. It looks like the USA supplied ARVN units with WWII equipment. In 1974, the USA completely cut off their aid, despite Nixon's assurances we would not do so, but he was mired in Watergate, which cost S Vietnam their Country; the USA just lost a President. Over 1 million ARVN died in the entire war.

Kennedy gave the go ahead for the Murder of the Diem brothers since the puppets weren't following orders. The next election was between two ARVN generals who would use bullets not ballets to decide that election. That ended the phoney democracy in "South Vietnam". US Troops were tired of the bait and retreat tactics on the ground. The US armies fighting moral was compared to the French in WW1. When your army starts refusing to fight than it's time to look at the peace option.

The problem with Vietnam strategy is that it resulted in the small patrols acting as bait to a few snipers that were imbeded everywhere, waiting for the patrols to pass by. The patrols would then unload all of their bullets onto 1 or 2 snipers they couldn't see, all the while, the North Vietnamese army swarmed around the few bases which were in the area. The tactic should have been to figure out how to build gigantic bases and populate them quickly to be used as bait for the North Vietnamese army, The more bases, the thinner the North Vietnamese would have been spread. The bases should have been built to appear as gigantic as possible, so they would appear to be as threatening as possible. Strangely, the war was ended after Irael failed in their Yom Kippur war........

They had to pull out of Vietnam as Army and Marine moral hit such lows that gong ho officers were being fragged. There was little support at home to continue. When Nixon and Kissinger couldn't win on the ground they tried to win with carpet bombing and diplomatic trips to visit Mao and Brezhnev. .

South VN already lost the initiatives when North VN did not honor the 1954 Geneva agreement. VC units were left in the South, plus endless NVA troops infiltrated from the North. From that moment on, the South could only passively fight to react. Even having US troops in Nam did not make much difference when North VN knew that they would not worry to be invaded regardless how bad they were bombed. War went only one way for the South.

@@WanderingShadow100 If you watched the movie carefully you will see that the goal of the ARVN and US was always to disarm the villagers and put them into camps with armed guards surrounding them and going with them to the rice patties. They called that a strategic hamlet. I call it a prison. If the VC were so unpopular than all you would need is to arm the peasants and let them take care of the VC. The real goal was to keep an US supported military dictatorship of pliable puppets in power. Next time you think 2nd amendment think South Vietnam as your new government.

US training for Conventional Warfare when Counter Revolutionary Warfare (CRW) was better. Vietnam was not Europe. The Australian in one of the southern provinces use this CRW tactics to great effect but one province controlled out of dozens was not enough. Checking sampans for communist infiltration when they use the Ho Chi Mhin Trail through other Indo China countries like Laos and Cambodia as well as Vietnam. The Yanks were still training using the tactics of earlier wars - fail.The VC were communist militia in the south.and the NVA were regulars from the north.

The war was not lost because of tactical errors. It was lost because it was unwinnable. The agreement of the French withdrawal was that there would be a national vote on reunification, but the US sabotaged it because it was obvious the Communists had overwhelming popular political support throughout the country including the supposedly anti-communist south. The Communists would win any fair election. The US's only option, aside from giving up the country to its Communist majority, was to try and move the situation away from the political field, where the US was weak, to the military field, where it was strong. But you can't win what is ultimately a political battle with military arms alone, and sure enough they did lose. The Vietnamese people were determined to decide their own future, and so they have.
