It was the threats to the over mountain frontiersman that rallied militias. These mountain men destroyed British regulars. QED. King George VI, an accomplished historian, when visiting the Kings Mountain Batllefield 150 years later said, “This is where England lost its Empire”

John Falls bought land on King's Mountain 1759 according to a record I found online, my sixth great grandfather. His son, Gilbraith, was killed at the battle of Ramseur's Mill. At that time he had been serving as sheriff of Lincoln NC, and his wife rode a couple of dozen miles on horseback to retrieve his corpse from the battlefield.

Colonel Benjamin Cleveland is my 7th great uncle. His brother, Reverend John Harrison Cleveland, is my 7th great grand father. It is something about fighting with the Cleveland's we all love. My great grandfather, Benjamin Cleveland's brother, fought along the side of him. I am very proud of my heritage.

My ancestor Lt. Col. James Steen is listed on the Federal Monument as having been killed in this battle. That appears to be incorrect since he also fought at the later Battle of Cowpens and was killed attempting to arrest a Tory in North Carolina.

Richard I too am a direct descendant of Lt. Col. James Steen and believe he did fight at Kings Mtn. but was not killed at Kings Mtn. and did not fight at Cowpens and probably did not die in the spring of 1781 in Rowan County but earlier in November 1780(after Kings Mtn.) I have done extensive research on this for 30 years. Only one source(Lyman Draper) says Steen fought at Cowpens and died in spring 1781. But Draper gave absolutely no proof whatsoever for that claim)

I can truly appreciate the History Teachers enthusiasm for early American survival but those lava lamps in his classroom speaks volumes about other historical times that I would prefer not be glorified in my child’s studies. That’s about as polite as I can put that! The 60’s hippy generation is one of the most embarrassing periods in American history. Kids disrespecting their parents, not working, fucking and smoking dope constantly, spitting on US soldiers, making babies they wouldn’t raise, leaching off of society. Oh man I could go on and on. Just like the Battle of Kings Mt was a turning point in the Rev war. The 60’s was a turning point in American Greatness. The destructive mindset of the 1960s still plagues this nation today

Lacking a lot of detail. First the Overmountain men were organized for a punishment raid on the Indians in Georgia. This Indian tribe had been armed by the British to attack settlements in what is now eastern Tennessee. Returning from this raid, they leaned of Ferguson and what he was doing in South Carolina to patriots. They decided to stay in their militia army and hunt Ferguson. After the battle, most of the loyalists were allowed to escape with only the British officers being closely guarded and imprisoned. After the battle the militia disbanded and went back home over the mountains. The battle of Cowpens several months later came later and triggered the evacuation of Charlottesville which ended in defeat at Yorktown, VA.
