when you think of it, the Story of the 3 Great Unifiers is all a huge Rags to Richs story, Nobunaga started as a minor Daimyo and ended as Regent of Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi wasn't from a great clan, he started as a sandal bearing and eventfully became a prefect under Oda, granted the name of Hashiba, and later became Toyotomi. Tokogawa Ieyasu started as a hostage, then later lead the once Matsudiara Clan to greatness and unified Japan under the Tokogawa banner.

I heard another version of this story... this one is more chaotic First Oda nobunaga did set up a decoy army in front of one of his castle to make imagawa think their main army trying to hold the castle and then his main army march from mountain path that imagawa did not know of to attack imagawa This is where the version differs oda did not plan to attack imagawa immediately rather he attack small camp between the imagawa main forces and the besieged castle to cut off their communication and supply lines and when he attack the storm came pouring down Oda want to completely annihilate this camp so imagawa didn't know that their communication and supply lines were cut off but since its dark and rain heavily some of imagawa army managed to slip off and because of that nobunaga give order to give chase before they managed to warn the other and thus foiling oda plan to cut off his enemy lines Unfortunately imagawa army managed to make contact with other camp then oda think something like "oh well... might as well take another camp" and then order his army to strike the imagawa army at that camp hastily form a battle formation in confusion the imagawa forces actually managed to form battle formation but because of the confusion and darkness and heavy rain they failed to gauge the number of oda forces thinking the oda forces outnumber them while in reality its the other way around The battle was short because imagawa panicked their battle lines crumble easily and because of constant civil war the oda army is far more experienced in battle When imagawa realised what happen he try to flee to the nearest camp but he choose a path through the marsh and heavy rain cause his fleeing army to bogged down At nobunaga side nobunaga just see imagawa running thinking like "oh shit this is imagawa main camp" then order his army to give chase and because nobunaga know the owari terrain well he ordered his army to give chase through other path so they not bogged down by the swamp and heavy rain and because of that he managed to outflanked imagawa and kill him In this version nobunaga is more "lucky" in the battle. He is still a capable commander able to use terrain, decoy, and act decisively on the field of battle but some "unfortunate" accident happen that nobunaga correctly use to his advantage I do not know which version is historically accurate i just happen to hear both version i forgot where i read or hear both version of this battle

Okehazama seems to have been fought during the day... There is a translation (admittedly from the very pro Nobunaga - Chronicles of Lord Oda Nobunaga) Imagawa Yoshimoto came to Kutsukake leading his army. On the evening of the eighteenth, Sakuma Daigaku and Oda Genpa reported to Lord Nobunaga in Kiyosu that the Imagawa were probably planning placing men and food in Otaka Castle on the night of the eighteenth. Before [the] reinforcements [that they were requesting from Nobunaga] could arrive at Washizu and Marune Forts in the morning, having taken the ocean tide into consideration, the Imagawa [most likely] intended to attack and take control of the two forts that lay between [Imagawa's] Otaka Castle and [Oda's] Narumi Castle. However, Lord Nobunaga mentioned nothing of his military plans on that night and merely chatted with his generals. He noted that is was late and sent everyone home. The generals laughed at Nobunaga, saying "this is a perfect illustration of the maxim that when a man's luck runs dry, his wisdom becomes clouded" and left. As anticipated, at daybreak [on the nineteenth], messengers arrived with news from Oda Genpa and Sakuma Daigaku that the Imagawa had already begun invading Washizu and Marune Moutains. This is when Nobunaga performed the famous dance scene from [the noh play] Atsumori. Ningen gojunen Genten no uchi wo kurabereba Yumemaboroshi no gotoku nari Hitotabi shoete Mesenu mono no arubeki ka 思へばこの世は常の住み家にあらず In truth, this world is not eternally inhabited 草葉に置く白露、水に宿る月よりなほあやし It is more transient than dewdrops on the leave of grass, or the moon reflected in the water. 金谷に花を詠じ、榮花は先立つて無常の風に誘はるる After reciting the poetry of flower at Kanaya, all glory is now left with the wind of impermanence. 南楼の月を弄ぶ輩も 月に先立つて有為の雲にかくれり Those who leisurely play with the moon of southern tower, now hide in the cloud of Saṅkhāra. 人間五十年、化天のうちを比ぶれば、夢幻の如くなり Human life lasts only 50 years, Contrast human life with life of Geten, It is but a very dream and illusion. 一度生を享け、滅せぬもののあるべきか Once they are given life from god, there is no such thing don't perish. これを菩提の種と思ひ定めざらんは、口惜しかりき次第ぞ Unless we consider this a very seed of awakening, it is a grievous truth indeed. Then he ordered that the war conch be blown and that his armor and weapons be brought to him. He put on his armor immediately and ate while standing up. Then he put on his helmet and left for battle. He was accompanied by his pages; Iwamura Nagatonokami; Hasegawa Kyusuke; Sawaki Tohachi (Maeda Toshiie's younger brother); Yamaguchi Hidanokami; and Kato Yazaburo. [The] Master and servants totaled six people and they mounted their horses and rode the [first] three ri (approximately 12 kilometers) at a fast pace. At about eight in the morning when Lord Nobunaga looked to the east from [where he was standing] in front of Kamichikama no Yashiro [Shrine] smoke was visible and it appeared that Washizu and Marune Forts had already fallen. Nobunaga was accompanied by only six mounted men and two hundred zohyo foot-soldiers. Lord Nobunaga thought that if he went by the way of the beach, it would be shorter, but because the tide was high, it would be particularly difficult for the horses. Therefore, he decided to go by the upper road from Atsuta and rode hard, arriving at Tange Fort. He then went to Zenshoji Temple where Sakuma Daigaku was in charge. There he set up camp and took time to asses the situation and decide on a battle strategy. He discovered that his enemy, Imagawa Yoshimoto, led forty-five thousand soldiers and was currently taking a break to rest his men and horses at Okehazama. At noon on the nineteenth, Yoshimoto positioned his men to the northwest and captured Washizu and Marune Forts. Yoshimoto performed three [noh] songs and commented that he could not have been more satisfied [with how things had gone so far]. In this battle [Tokugawa] Ieyasu acted as [Imagawa Yoshimoto's] vanguard and made use of his akamusha red corps. He brought provisions with him to Otaka Castle so that his men and horses could rest, [but they still] had difficult time taking Washizu and Marune Forts. Knowing that Lord Nobunaga had come to Zenshoji Temple, Sassa Hayatonosho and Senshu Shiro led three hundred men against Yoshimoto's men. Fifty-some cavalry including Sassa Hayatonosho and Senshu Shiro died in battle. Yoshimoto was delighted and said 'Even devils or gods cannot stop Yoshimoto! I feel good!' He was singing in camp as well. Lord Nobunaga considered this and tried to move to Nakashima, but his generals stopped him by grabbing the bit of his horse. The generals said that the path to Nakajima was narrow and bordered on both sides by fields of deep mud and could only be traversed single file. The enemy would be able to see clearly that the force that Nobunaga led was very small and that was a bad idea. Lord Nobunaga shook off his generals and proceeded to Nakajima. His army at that point numbered less than two thousand men. [Finally, the generals were successful in stopping Nobunaga himself from going on, but] Lord Nobunaga sent his army beyond Nakajima. Lord Nobunaga said "Everyone listen! The Imagawa soldiers are exhausted because they haven't eaten last night and had a difficult time taking Washizu and Marune Forts. We are a fresh force. Do not be scared just because the enemy is large and we are small. Heaven decides who shall win and who shall lose. If the enemy attacks, retreat. If the enemy retreats, pursue them and attack. No matter what happens, overpower the enemy and destroy them. It's easy. Do not take heads, just cut them down and move on! If we win this battle, all who take part will bring honor and fame to their families forever! Fight hard!" At that time, [the generals] Maeda Matazaemon (=Toshiie), Mori Kawachi no Kami, Mori Juro, Kinoshita Yoshitoshi, Nakagawa Kinemon, Sakuma Yataro, Mori Kosuke, Ajiki Yataro, and Uozumi Hayato, arrived carrying the heads of some of the enemy. Lord Nobunaga repeated his orders to them. The army then moved into the mountains. A storm blew in from our rear and suddenly it began to rain down upon the enemy with the power of stones or icicles. At the foot of Kutsukake Pass, large camphor tree was blown down in an easterly direction by the wind coming to rest at the foot of a small pine. Those present asked "Is this was a battle in which Atsuta Damyojin [The tutelary deity of the Oda Clan] is taking part?" Soon the rain slackened. Lord Nobunaga took his spear and raising it over his head yelled "Attack! Attack!" The enemy looked at Nobunaga's army as they [came out of the forest] and began their attack. The Imagawa troops were surprised, unprepared, and disorganized and they retreated, scattering [before Nobunaga's men]. Bows, spears, banners, and swords were scattered everywhere and [the camp] was in great confusion. Yoshimoto's palanquin was abandoned by the men around it and Lord Nobunaga yelled "Those are Yoshimoto's senior retainers (hatamoto) attack them." About two in the afternoon we fought our way from the west [side of the valley] to the east and Yoshimoto's headquarters camp. About three hundred cavalrymen formed a defensive perimeter around Yoshimoto and attempted to retreat. They were attacked three, four, and then five times and their numbers declined until finally, they numbered only fifty riders. Lord Nobunaga dismounted and made his way to the vanguard, competing with his younger men to be the first to engage the enemy. He struck at the enemy but was knocked down. Hot-blooded young men fought desperately breaking [even] their sword guards in the heat of battle. Although it was a confusing battle, friend and foe were easily distinguished. There were countless dead and wounded, including horse-guards (umamawari) and pages. Hattori Koheta struck at Yoshimoto, but Hattori fell because he had already received a slash to the knee. [Then] Mori Shinsuke attacked Yoshimoto and took his head. People are saying that when Takehirasama was [recently] forced to take his own life at Kiyosu Castle and Mori Shinsuke captured Takehira's younger brother and saved his life that the blessing of the gods that he gained at the time brought him good luck today and was able to take Yoshimoto's head. It seems that it was a hail storm and the wind/hail/rain helped obscure the Oda movements.... Also it is thought the Oda attack had 2000 troops and the actual unit with Yoshimoto had 5-6,000 units.. While Mori Shinsuke was well rewarded for his valor, the scout in charge of reporting all of the movement of Yoshimoto head quarters got even more... There is also a theory that the food and drink the local people provided to Yoshimoto and his entourage was part of a purposeful trap.

While by tradition, only the descendants of a Minamoto can become Shogun, in practice it is not that hard to corrupt a temple monk with favors or bribes and have forge records to be "discovered" to allow one to claim being descended from a Minamoto (any Minamoto). The one case where it could not be done was with Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was promoted by his lord (Oda Nobunaga) to a samurai from an ashigaru so he could never have gotten away with falsifying records claiming he was descended from a samurai family and so even though he went on to become the ruler of Japan, he could not be called a Shogun and had to settle for the lower rank title of Taiko. Furthermore, the Battle of Okehazama did not occur at night. It occurred during the afternoon which was so stifling hot that the Imagawa forces took a break when a freak thunderstorm occurred and the Oda clan struck.

Nobunaga must've felt like the king of the world after the battle, and you know what, I wouldn't blame him at all. Was he lucky? Of course, but as they say, you miss every shot you don't take. Only a fool would've taken a gamble against such odds, but he wasn't just a fool, he was THE fool.

I've seen an article detailing that Imagawa Yoshimoto wasn't a foolish artistic or even arrogant ruler as is typical (the aforementioned traits were an act to blend with the Imperial Court and it was actually his son who would pursue the arts). Imagawa was however a feared archer and highly influential, so much so that after his death, both Shingen and Kenshin would send Nobunaga a letter which could be summed up as, "We're watching you."

I don't think that yoshimoto is an arrogant leader, but sometimes after an easy win with overwhelming number of army, someone can feel a little bit secured thus making him take it easy and stay at okehazama
@nicholasgutierrez99403 жыл бұрын
Adding on to what Marked 1 said, it's interpretation vs reality. Yoshimoto HAD to be a great leader otherwise he wouldn't have grown to such an extent to where he could march on Kyoto through dozens of hostile clans. The "fool" Yoshimoto basically comes from his defeat because... come on. Who loses to an army 10x smaller than you? It's very obvious that East Asian cultures, especially Japan values martial ability. So when you mess up, it stains your legacy forever. It's why Nobunaga is seen as a heartless leader, despite him actually valuing peasants a lot.
@just_radical4 жыл бұрын
I feel like I've spent a lot of time lately speculating what happens next if Imagawa wins in Owari. Like regardless of what his actual intentions in the capital might have been I really doubt they would have been tenable once he actually got there given that Nobunaga spent the rest of his life trying to sort out shifting alliances and betrayals once he was established there. Like would the Sagami-Suruga-Kai Alliance even have been viable if Yoshimoto made it past Mino? Shingen was obviously highly ambitious himself and one of Nobunaga's big issues was that Kyoto was geographically isolated enough from his powerbase that he could be easily cut in half anytime there was a revolt in Omi. Now basically double that distance and Imagawa's problems are starting to look more like that of the Ashikaga and Kamakura shogunates.

Yoshimoto had no reason to think so. If he was to ally with Oda in order to trespass Oda territory, his supply line between his newly taken territories and is own command centre in Suruga would be cut off, had Oda betrayed him. Plus, the Oda territory included some of the wealthiest trading ports at the time which the Imagawa would benefit heavily from. Oda had just lost its only ally to the North (Saito) and it seemed like a fantastic time to strike.
