Nice to see so many cardigan patterns in one place for comparison. Thought you might want to take a look at the Yvonne Coatigan by Bobbins and Buttons. I won this pattern in a challenge last year. I haven't sewn it up yet but would like to get on it before the Christmas rush. It is relaxed fit with a raised back neck which is what drew me to it. Should be cozy for the Canadian winter to come.

Hi Nancy! I think you mentioned that one before and I haven’t looked at it yet. Definitely will look at it though because I do love a high back neck! 💞

Brilliant vlog, so informative. I will definitely try the Chashmerette Cardigan as I love raglan sleeves. I have made about five Harpers, which I love. Hope you have enjoyed your trip to the UK, at least you will have had some interesting weather!
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! I definitely recommend the Cashmerette cardi - I’ll probably make at least one more. My trip to the UK has been fantastic (we come home tomorrow) and like you said, we were spoiled weather-wise. We saw rain for about 1 hour last week and sun the rest of the time. I carried an umbrella and a rain coat all over the UK for no reason and probably didn’t need so many cardigans. But not complaining! 😂

The Fuller Cardigan is only available in the original size range, not the smaller sizes. I love the look of it and even emailed them to ask if they have plans to make it in the smaller sizes, and they said no. 😢 Yours looks fabulous.

Oh no - I assumed it was available in their full size range because it came out not very long ago. That’s really too bad because it is a good pattern. 😕

Ooooo look at that red cardi on you ❤ Stunning . Harper cardi seems to be a winner for everyone, I know Jen loves it and did a Big 4 comparison. I also love the striped one and the longer length looks so nice on you. What a great bunch of cardigans…wonder what the collective noun is for cardigans…A closet of Cardis perhaps? 😂😂😂😂. I nearly made a Harper once but that’s a long story and I’m sure I have told you before… if not I will tomorrow 😂. Great video and you will be super cosy all Winter long now ❤xx

Love your review of all these cardigans. I just had the harper printed and will make it soon. I’ve been making the Metra Blazer from Love Notions. I call it my elevated cardigan as it is knit and doesn’t have buttons. I did size up as my normal size was a bit tight in the arms

I don’t have a problem with 1/4” seam allowances-I think maybe designers use that when the item is likely to be served-but I absolutely hate it when you can’t find the seam allowance easily. In fact, this is one of my major gripes with “indie” patterns: the SA could be anything and it can be almost impossible to find. When I took pattern drafting in college back in the dark ages (and we always used 1cm or 2cm allowances) that would have been an automatic fail. But thanks for your reviews of all these patterns. Very, very helpful.
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
I’m so happy you found the video helpful. I agree - if indie pattern designers aren’t going to be consistent with their SA, the very least they can do is make it super simple for us to find them! Some indies are really good at that, but some aren’t. 💞

I really like the curved hem of the cocoon cardigan but can’t stand things being fitted on my upper arms, so I’ll probably steer clear of it. I’ll definitely get the Harper cardigan since it’s free, so why not give it a try! If I buy one of these for the fall/winter it will be the Fuller. The raglan sleeve, shaping darts, and mitered corners are all amazing details. Thanks for this very thorough run down!

Really useful video again. You are so clear and concise. You never waffle which is great. Loved the Blackwood and the band sets it off. The Style Arc instruction comments made me laugh. I once spent over an hour on one line of a Style Arc faux wrap skirt pattern trying to figure it out. I got there eventually but boy, did my head hurt! Never made a cardigan but have just downloaded the Marlo and ordered fabric so watch this space. Hope you are enjoying your trip. 😊
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Awww thank you so much!! Yeah the Style Arc instructions just did not make sense to me at all. I like the Marlo but not sure it would look good on me. If I’m not mistaken, it’s really oversized and I tend not to like that on me. My trip has been amazing but I’m now anxious to get home. I miss hubby and the cats. 😂💞

Thank you for the cardi run down! I really like that the stripes in the band of the Blackwood DON'T match across with the bodice pieces. I think it makes a greater visual impact. And it looks intentional since, as you said, they do match each other across your body. I've made a free In the Folds Slouchy Cardigan from Peppermint Magazine that I like a lot - it is a cocoon shape like your Sydney. I just found your channel recently and have been enjoying it!

great vlog Izzy! I love cardigans and enjoyed hearing about the details of and seeing all your different makes. More convincing that I really need to sew up the Harper Sinclair cardigan especially since i need a win. I finished the Cashmerette Kineton..even expanding it to fit my body but it looked awful so I have already given it away. Suppose each make brings learning so not a total loss. Also inspired me to dump probably half of my closet which leaves room for me mades. xx Karen
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Karen! The Harper is a really, really good one and so quick to sew. I think it’ll definitely be a win for you. I made the Kineton last year and although I liked it, I think it would need a little bit of work to fit my body shape better. I had the same thought as you about a closet clean out last night. I’m running out of room and I need to have a good look at what I really wear and get rid of the stuff I don’t. Xx 💞

If you're machine gives you grief sewing buttonholes through different thicknesses....I started by-passing the foot pedal for ALL buttonholes and using the start-stop button (if your machine has that option). It was a game changer giving me so much less anxiety. I've had my janome for almost 9 years and never used that button. I thought it was a wierd button to begin with. But for buttonholes.... with all the different buttonhole options on my machine... My Buttonholes are perfect everytime.
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the tip!! I’m not near my machine right now, but I’ll definitely check to see if I have that button on there. Can you believe I’ve had that machine for over a year and never thought to check if it has a start/stop button?? 😂
@upcycledcopycat8389 Жыл бұрын
@@dizzyquiltsandsews ... If you're machine has two seperate plugs, one for the machine and one for the foot pedal then you prob have the button. You have to remove the foot pedal plug from the machine to engage the stop/start button.

Well the Harper Sinclair wins it for me. Whilst I really liked the smartness of the Style Arc cardigan on you, the lack of instructions irritate me with Style Arc. I’ve made one of their patterns and KZbin was my friend! The Blackwood cardigan was lovely too. I actually thought the stripes on the band were intentional and I really like the effect! 😄 The red Harper fabric colour is awesome on you. Hi, not sure if it's been mentioned but Style Arc is Australian and our sizing is smaller than the US. Women's 14 Au is smaller than American 14 by about 2 sizes. I love their patterns.
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Hi! I chose my size not based on the number, but based on my measurements because I know sizes differ from pattern company to another and from region to another. But even after choosing based on my measurement, the cardigan turned out a little big. That’s also what I found in my research. Thank you for mentioning it though. 😊

GREAT review, Izzy. Lots of helpful detail about each pattern. Since I have retired, I find that cardigans are a perfect layering piece for my current lifestyle. My fav is the Harper. I have a cropped Harper cut out and ready to sew. It is a black cable knit with contrast banding in cream lightweight Ponte. I think (am hoping) it will be a good one for a dressier look and feel.

This was a great evaluation of all your cardigan makes. The only cardigan that I’ve made so far is the Heidi cardigan by Style Arc. I used the size that the pattern suggested, but in my case it came out too snug. I found the instructions very confusing at times. I’ve only been sewing for myself for 18 months. I am looking for another cardigan pattern to try, and I’m very tempted by the Blackwood cardigan pattern.
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Yeah the Style Arc instructions are pretty bad. If you like the style of the Blackwood (more fitted and won’t close in the front), I highly recommend that one. If you like a more relaxed fit, then the Harper is amazing. 💞

@bridget9111 Жыл бұрын
I’ve made at least five harpers they are so quick and good. I don’t think I’d bother with the Blackwood as it’s intentionally more open and I don’t think it will suit me. I made a Sydney and l love the more fitted cocoon shape, I did however find the pockets too bulky on the band seam as it’s a thicker cardie, rookie error as I was doing it I thought this will be bulky I’ve made it a bit better with hidden hand stitching but only wear it in the house. I’ve also made the itch to stitch Lisbon a round neck button through, very nice a bit smarter. A very fancy cardigan I’ve made is the Kirsi (shorter length) by forget me not patterns in a gorgeous knit jacquard definitely one for special occasions. As you can see I love cardies and would like to try the fuller next I take the same size as you so I’ll proceed with caution. Thanks for the great vlog I really enjoyed it ❤
@dizzyquiltsandsews Жыл бұрын
I’m so glad you enjoyed the review! I also found the round hem of the Sydney was really thick because of the pockets and it doesn’t lie absolutely flat because of it so definitely something I’ll keep in mind if I make it again. If you made and love the Harper, I would definitely not bother with the Blackwood. 💞
@TodayinJensSewingRoom Жыл бұрын

Your Blackwoods look amazing on you! The Harper is definitely more relaxed in the sleeves and the bodice. I usually choose the Blackwood when I don’t really need extra warmth, but a layer to finish the look. If I need warmth, I’ll go for the Harper every time. 💞
