Langsdorff was an officer of the old school and made sure that the merchant crews were off and well clear before sinking them in accordance with established customs - ensuring that the lifeboats were well stocked and given directions to land. There is an occasional tale that a Petty Officer mistreated a prisoner and the Captain was angry enough to demote him on the spot and write an official apology. He was such an officer and gentleman that, when he could not take aboard prisoners for whatever reason, he would call up the nearest naval wireless station, give the location of the lifeboats, the number of people aboard and then wait for a reply before steaming off. After he felt he had to die with honour and shoot himself, his death greatly upset the merchant Captains who travelled to his funeral to pay respects and salute as his coffin was lowered

This movie plays like a Douglas Reeman novel, but it really happened (more or less) as depicted.

The Graf Spee was a battle ship. Not a cruiser.

@@rutabagasteu Graf Spee was a Cruiser. The term "pocket battleship" was coined by the British because it was a cruiser with large guns that punched above its weight. Its armour was only of Cruiser standard though.
