The theory that the Vandals traveled to North Africa via Spain and left behind a deserted country in their old homeland can only be refuted by looking at the work of Ammianus Marcellinus. Because the numerous vandals who stayed behind send a delegation to North Africa and ask the vandals there to give up their home farms, they urgently need the space for the numerous descendants. Into this overcrowded land are any "Slavs" supposed to have infiltrated? Completely untenable.

They are not only Germanic but also Iranian. They included Iranian Alan tribes which crossed the Danube to escape the Hunnic invaders. They crossed the Danube and united with Germanic Vandal tribes. Also taking part in the invasion of North Africa. In France, cities like Alaincourt and Allainville carry their name, and Catalonia was originally called “Goth-Alania.” In Hungary, there is even a region inhabited by descendants of the Alans. Known as Jaśzberény (in Hungarian, Alans were called “Yas”), it still celebrates some traditions, such as the ceremonial blowing of a 9th-century horn. Even the common English first name, “Alan,” is said to originally come from those ancient warriors.

One thing to keep in mind re: these 'barbarian hordes' is that they were not very numerous. Fighting men might number 10,000+...if Rome in the 5th century A.D. had two or three legions of the type found in Caesar's day, there wouldn't have been a fall of Rome.

It's a commentary on the Vandals as a people that they totally disappeared leaving only their name as a label for those who loot and destroy for love of destruction. None of this indicates that Belisarius was a particularly great general. I think he's somewhat overrated because Procopious, who I consider a suspect source, fawns over him so much. Also, his anti-Catholic actions, including his outrageous treatment of the Pope, during the Gothic Wars, suited the modern political agendas and Christophobic attitudes of upper class English writers like Robert Graves. As for the later Byzantine control of North Africa and the Western Mediterranean Basin, they ablexto do it as long as they had a navy to control the Mediterranean and an army to protect Egypt and its northern approaches through Israel and Nabatea.
