Writer here! This has been one of the most requested videos on the channel and it was such a pleasure to finally piece this puzzle together. A big reason why this video came to be in the first place was the great sources I was provided with by the amazing Georgian Institute of Public Affairs! A special thanks to their team and especially Nika Khoperia who translated new findings on this often misrepresented period of history. Didgori is not a clear cut battle and cannot be described without the context of the crusades/ERE and Seljuk Empire. We hope you enjoy this story as it fills the void and represents what we consider the most likely scenario of these events!

One interesting fact: Medieval Arab historian Ibn al-Azraq al-Fariqi who arrived in Tbilisi in 1153, and spent several years in the service of the then King Demetrius I, was particularly interested in the battle of Didgori and even visited the battlefield. Al-Fariq wanted to meet with the participants of the battle so Here is what he writes in his anals: “I, myself saw the battlefield in 1153 as soon as I arrived in Tbilisi. By the order of King Demetrius of Georgia, we went to the inner districts of Tbilisi, then We passed an area that is a 70-day walk ... A few days later we reached a wide mountain with a wide field. At the foot of this mountain is erected a high fortress, and here the king encamped. The king told me: “Here is someone in prison from the Ilghazi army, as tomorrow comes, look and ask him where he is from." I decided to do the same. But that night the king received word that some districts had revolted. Immediately the hike fell and the king set off. God did not want us to meet him ." As we can read from his writings, the prisoner of war was still in prison after 22 years of the battle. According to Arab historian Ibn al-ʿAdīm (1192-1262), 4.000 Muslims were imprisoned in the battle, while other Christians sources mention numbers as high as 30.000 (which is most probably an exaggeration). The eyewitness of the battle of Didogri "Chronicler of David" writes that there were numerous casualties on the Seljuk Side: "And our troops - and not only them but the whole kingdom was overflowing with gold and silver, Arabian horses, Assyrian mules, tents and carpets, and countless military devices, diverse copper drums and catapults, refined vessels for feasts and ablutions, and kitchenware - how much paper or ink it would take to describe all that! You should have seen how peasants were driving the captured Arabian kings, how could you tell now that they had been great fighters!” P.S. As a Georgian, thank you very much Kings and Generals for this video!

“If not Tbilisi, there might be standing a mosque in stead of church in Vienna, as Jalal Ad-Dins, Genghis Khans and other Eastern Sultans and Shahs were crashed exactly on Tbilisi Citadel. Tbilisi stood, as European fortress from where enemies of the whole Christianity could only reach Europe weakened and emptied from blood.” Tbilisi has fallen a hundred times and it is amazing !!! Resurrected for the hundredth time! The conquering invaders - the armies of Rome and Byzantium, the Arabs, the Persians and the Turks, the Mongols or any other barbarian tribes - were destroying the capital and it would rise again from the ashes as a buffer that would slow down, weaken the mightiest darts! "This is how Tbilisi fought, this is how it was beaten, even for Vienna, even for Western Europe ... Even after Giorgi Saakadze - this People's Greatest Duke, under the command of 300 Aragvians, who guarded the gates of Georgia like lions, until they were exalted by the shout of the barbarians - Allahu Akbar! ..." Karl Hugo Huppert (1902-1982). Russian Geographer about Georgians: "Europe, and especially Russia, has not yet realized how important historical mission Georgia has fulfilled in the face of European Christianity, through its centuries-long suffering, its devotional battles. The Georgian nation is a truly crusader nation. In a bloody war against the Muslims, this nation has not lost a sword for more than a thousand years, and if the Christian cross had not been embroidered on the clothes of many of them, it would have been embroidered in the heart of every Georgian. Thus, Georgia became a stronghold of Christianity for Europe, receiving the first and most terrible blows. This little ally of Europe has done a great historical service to the security of the continent. In spite of everything, this nation has retained its beauty, language, customs, traditions and of course, faith. The great Islamic states of the East have repeatedly turned their energy and fanaticism to the unshakable chest of little Georgia, and although their claws still reached the Caucasian peoples of northern Caucasus and managed to convert most of them to Islam, the Georgians themselves remained Christians and did not convert to Islam. The crosses of the temples of Christian Georgia were rising higher and higher, hiding in the middle, fortifying themselves stronger in the mountains, but still they continued to shine. "And still the Islamic Golden Crescent remained at the foot of the Georgian temples, but it was always proudly overlooked by the Christian cross." "Crusader Nation" - from the book by Russian geographer Yevgeny Markov - "Essays on the Caucasus". Crusader Historian about Georgians "Every year, the depths of Persia overwhelm these horrible people in great numbers, and they cover almost the entire surface of the world. but our torment moved even the heart of The God and he have risen a competitor Kingdom of Iberians. dei gratia, they grew and strengthened as they broke and overthrew the arrogance of the Persians! Earlier the Iberians themselves feared these people and shunned them, but now they far surpass the Persians in strength and military experience. Thus the Persians, who for a long time feared even the most distant kingdoms, are now content with whether they will have at least temporary peace within their dominions. The Kingdom of Iberia is located in the north. It is also known as Abkhazia. Its inhabitants are distinguished by high stature, supreme strength and their military qualities. With frequent wars and incessant attacks, they broke the forces of the Persians, so that the latter no longer considered themselves equal to them. Therefore, those who are concerned about their own situation have stopped looting and robbing other countries." Willelmus Tyrensis (1130-1186 AD).

You, that Russian Yevgeny Markov, and most of the people of Georgia should go and learn some history and then write nonsense comments about Persia/Iran. The Persians didn't care about Georgia, the Safavids and Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar were Turks, not Persians. They were the Turks who ruled Iran, not Persians. Even Tamar the Great, the queen you are proud of and who is the most powerful and famous queen in the history of your country was a half-Iranian woman. Her mother was an Iranic Ossetian woman, not a Georgian woman. Today, you betray Armenia and united with the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkey. Your ally, the Republic of Azerbaijan, considers the Safavids as its history. You Georgians should go and make these cries for your allied countries, the Republic of Azerbaijan and Turkey. I remember when I was in grade school, my teacher offered a treat for the first student who could name a country starting with the letter "G". I had just watched the news the night before about Russia invading a country called Georgia, so naturally I said "Georgia". My teacher thought I was referring to the southern American state State Georgia, and said, "just because Georgia has people who talk with a southern accent and fly the Confederate flag, doesn't mean that Georgia is a real country".

Thanks for covering this battle in an unbiased manner. As a Georgian, I can confirm the part about our nationalism and Didgori. My teachers and friends alike will kill me for saying this, but I agree with your estimation of the numbers. All schools teach the 300k figure like it's an empirical fact when it's not. I remember asking my teacher how and why Seljuks had 300k soldiers against David when they had less than 100k in Manzikert. She responded that it was a coalition of Muslim nations but refused to name anything more than the Seljuks themselves as if they were a centralized political entity. Knowing the Sunni and Shia divide, western battle numbers, the jihads and the failure of cooperation against the crusades, I always took this matter with a grain of salt. Despite my cynical stance, I was surprised to see that David had failed to take Ganja. They never teach that in schools. Thanks for this unbiased take on our history and brace yourselves for the angry Georgian comments that you may get, because I know them all too well.

dude, I wouldn't go talking in absolutes. in my school and in the textbooks at the time it never flat out said that il gazi had 300k. it always just said here are the sources, they're most definitely wrong. Weird thing though, these bloated numbers usually came from muslim chronicles nor Christian ones, so I'm a bit confused why in the video they said it the other way around. also david did subjugate ganja in the end, so him not being able to take it a few years earlier isn't that big of a detail, although interesting.

@@giorgikvernadze3766 Yes, the books say that the number ranged from 150k to 300k depending on the source, but the teachers usually go for the bigger number. If they did exist, it's quite possible that the sources were written by Ilghazi's enemies to overexaggerate his defeat.

David the Builder was a military, diplomatic, administrative and political genius, all at once. Perhaps one of the most talented men in all history. He, through a series of methodical and extremely well thought-out and executed moves and reforms, turned a seemingly hopeless, drained and devastated land in a condition of feudal anarchy into a regional powerhouse for the next one hundred years, and it only ended when the Mongols showed up.

Beautiful. What a king he was, much respect. The fact that it the Rashiduns who captured Tbilisi to a point that is it their capital to this day is in and of itself an awe-inspiring fact. History is fascinating, isn't it? :)

I found your channel just today and I liked is to much that subscribed immediately. I was curious to find out if you had made any videos about Georgia, but was a bit disappointed. It was surprising to see this video tho. As a georgian, I thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤ Edit: Even though I'm aware with the fact that the numbers are really exaggerated in history books, I didn't expect them to be that low. But, considering the countries' powers back then, 18k vs 30k is very highly probable. So thank you for covering that topic, you guys rock. ❤🤘

Well the fact is that no matter the exact numbers, Seljuks definitely outnumbered Georgians.

Long time subscriber here! I myself am Georgian and appreciate this video a lot! Even though our country is small, we have a very rich history and these types of videos help a lot to educate others who don't know much about our culture and history.

I love K & G. Covering lesser known, by the public at large, battles and wars is great. I’m learning so much it’s great. Other ones that aren’t well known are the Chaco War, which showed the ineffectiveness of the League of Nations, Khalkin Gal, as well as a host of ancient and Medieval battles and wars that had an outsized influence due to the domino effect.
