We seem to forget that the British Empires crusade to abolish slavery had seen Gordon already in Sudan on campaigns to destroy the slave routes and cities built around a 2000 yr old slave trade from West Africa. He had hung many high ranking officials who carried on slave trading after accepting financial compensation by the British to end their trade and it made him highly unpopular amongst the Sudanese leaders.

A good point. One thing, though, this was the East African slave trade, not West African. The East African slaves came from southern Sudan and Uganda and were sent to Egypt and Arab countries. West Africans were sent to the Americas.

they left out the part where burnaby nearly lost them the battle! the gardiner had only been issued with a thousand rounds.burnaby commanded the company on the north side of the square facing away from the machine gun. he desperate for action saw the damage the gun inflicted and ordered his men to left wheel and give volley fire in support.this left a gaping hole in the square and a huge force of dervishes hidden out of sight in a gully in front of burnaby rushed in. the gardiner then jammed burnaby and the front face of the wall were attacked from front and back.stewart seeing disaster threaten ordered the south wall to about face and fire. they managed to drive the dervishes back and reform the square .burnaby was sadly left outside.hed been killing men with his 4 barrelled lancaster pistol and when empty several more with his sword until speared.

I seem to remember it was the Egyptian government that asked Britian for military help, not Britain deciding to intervene in the conflict.
@mikekemp98778 ай бұрын
correct .in fact the whole problem was britains reluctance to become involved in egypt. the sudan had no economic value .once lost the british only wanted the egyptian garrisons removed and intended to let the mahdi get on with it.gordon was supposed to go to khartoum and evacuate it .instead he allowed himself to be beseiged confidant that public opinion would force the british to intervene.gladstone refused. finally after long delays a task force was sent.its thought now wolsely had orders to procrastinate as long as possible.gladstone hoped the situation would resolve itself without military intervention.he chose a ludicrous march up the nile instead of a quick assault via berber from the red sea.he then decided that the only way to get boats up the nile was not to use natives experienced with the river but to recruit voyageurs from the frozen rivers of canada! they took 4 months to arrive.he then took another 6 months training his men to ride camels.finally he set off at such a slow pace that eventually an irate public at home caused orders to be sent to speed up! it was at this point he sent the flying column lead by stewart across the desert.they were too late.

That movie was suppose to be in the "River War" campaign, the Sudan War. The British were not wearing red. The movie does not have anything to do with "The Gordon Relief", which never happened decades before. Gordon had the mission of removing troops from the Sudan, not to defend it. He was just an advisor.
