How horrifying to be a surviving soldier of Fingon, fleeing to Gondolin with Turgon's forces, knowing your homeland of Hithlum is entirely unprotected and doom will come to your family. Dark stuff.

You have to remember that Sir Tolkien participated in WW1 The Battle of Somme and I am certain many others and most of these battles were done in trenches and such atrocities that are unspeakable so I am convinced that the Battles he personally saw and participated in were full of tears beyond count....

What makes Maedhros so interesting is that he is the most human of all the elves. His character evolves and devolves. He is also conflicted, balancing the darkness and light.
@orirune3079

I agree, most of the elves are a bit too perfect to be really interesting as characters. The ones who show flaws are the ones who are compelling characters, like Maedhros, Galadriel, even Maeglin in some iterations (some of the versions of Maeglin are just total cowardly losers though).

Maedhros is easily my favorite elf king. Getting his right hand cut off, learning how to fight better with his left, and becoming a pale, terrifying, almost vampirish killer is just so badass.

@@orirune3079 I love Feanor, Maedhros, Maeglor etc., and my heart breaks for the latter two especially. But I find Fingolfin, Fingon, Finrod, Glorfindel and Beleg (just to name a few) equally compelling. Maybe it's Tolkien who knows how to write the "good" guys, which I think it's difficult to do.

In my opinion, there is no greater single feat in the entire legendarium than Hurin’s defiance of Morgoth. Not even Frodo’s bearing of the Ring to Mt Doom compares with him. First of all, there is his epic last stand, which is impressive in its own right, but that pales in comparison to what comes next. Morgoth tried to daunt Hurin with his terrible eyes, but Hurin would not give way. Keep in mind that most of the Eldar who were captured failed this first test and became thralls of Morgoth. These were elves who had seen the light of the trees and Manwe himself. I was really hoping you would quote this passage directly, because Hurin’s conversation with Morgoth is one of my favorite things that Tolkien ever wrote. "Blind you are Morgoth Bauglir, and blind shall ever be, seeing only the dark. You know not what rules the hearts of Men, and if you knew you could not give it. But a fool is he who accepts what Morgoth offers. You will take first the price and then withhold the promise; and I should get only death, if I told you what you ask." Then Morgoth laughed, and he said: "Death you may yet crave from me as a boon." Then he took Hurin to the Haudh-en-Nirnaeth, and it was then new-built and the reek of death was upon it; and Morgoth set Hurin upon its top and bade him look west towards Hithlum, and think of his wife and his son and other kin. "For they dwell now in my realm," said Morgoth, "and they are at my mercy." "You have none," answered Hurin. What an absolute savage Hurin is! No one else in the entire legendarium comes close, not Earendil, not Frodo, nobody. And before anyone counters by saying all that Hurin earned through his actions was the curse of Morgoth upon his family, I will remind you of the Second Doom of Mandos and the Dagor Dagorath, which I choose to believe is a Ragnarok/Armageddon style prophecied ending of the world, where certain things are known to occur beforehand. In such prophecies we are told that Morgoth, the first and foulest of all creations, will be slain once and for all by Turin Turambar!!! As always, Eru raises up Morgoth’s own theme against him to defeat him. Perfect Tolkien.

What can be said about your amazing videos that hasn’t already been said? This series isn’t just a summary- you explore the context, connections and themes - it makes your channel so essential. The freedom of Men - the free will seems so important in the lore and in real world faith - people are the X factor - they have nothing but faith - no certainty of fate or reward for being honorable make Men so special despite being mortal - Hurin’s conversation with Morgoth is my favorite - I cannot wait for the Children of Hurin series - I hope you expand on that dialogue

Everytime i watch the videos i get taken away with a storm of the passion of dave when he talks that i feel the story like if i was daydreaming. I can see it infront of my eyes. That really shows how powerful dave is in his story telling. The videos are such a high value and quality it's uncompareable, One of a kind. Undescribeable! After each end i get like a smal kind just wanting more and more and more. Really great job, its undesribeable your super talented please do never stop your passion! I really like your comments about Huor and his wife and about Maedros and his psychological state after the battle, and the way this battle changed him. The way Tolkien told his story left little room for the emotional exploration of his characters,their sorrows, the PTSD they must have suffered after the battles. That is why it is such a pity that the new series The Rings of Power appears to be a glorified fanfiction: it could have given us a more personal look into the lives of all those characters. And I really really love the way you use the word badass: a badge of honour!

Have you read the LotR`s? You will learn everything that Tolkien wrote and see it all in your own mind. You won`t see the characters as presented here, but you see them as your mind does. The Silmarillion is epic ,and it is like learning real history. This channel is great for sure, but I like to view what everyone looks like and takes shape in your mind.

@Gib59er absolutely Gibs. Most folks don't come here to be shown what characters look like but to revisit what they already read, or to remember something that they forgot, maybe to learn something that they missed and to hear what another's take may be. I think it's great. When I read LOTR'S, Silmarrilion, unfinished tales and some of HoME the first timeS, youtube didn't exist.

My heart breaks for Maedhros at this point in the story. Talk about survivor's guilt! If his captivity & rescue mark the first big turning point in his character arc, then I would call this the second. Ever since establishing Himring, he has fought fiercely on the front lines against Morgoth, gladly putting himself in the position of greatest danger. But at the end of the Battle that he urged, he's still alive - and nearly everyone who followed him is dead. It is indeed a darker Maedhros whom we see from here on out.
@Gorlim_the_Unhappy

The oath of Fëanor led Maedhros to accept the treachery of Ulfang and his sons into his ranks. In his quest to rid middle-earth of the dark lord Morgoth, and his desire to reclaim the remaining silmarils, Maedhros pulled all he could in, and Morgoth knew that his spies could easily slip into the ranks.

interesting parallels between the last stand of Huor and Hurin and 1066 England...yes, King Harold and the arrow thru the eye at Hastings (disputed accuracy now but accepted at the time of authoring the Silmarillion), but also the lesser taught Battle of Stanford Bridge earlier that year. The annuls record that one Beserker held the Bridge by himself, with a 2 handed Dane axe, slaying 40 before eventually falling; its regarded as the last act of the viking age

Looking forward to the Children of Hurin though I would lay a substantial wager we view things differently :D (I tend to blame the human traits more than the curse for all the befell Hurin's family and himself than others do).

Another amazing video! I was listening to it (again), and it occurred to me - some of the WWI poetry I remember referenced gas masks, I think it was invented for WWI? And I wonder if those inspired the fireproof masks of the dwarves.

Amazing video my friend, can wait for the next story, one of my favorites in the entire Legendarium. Thank you, I really appreciate your work Dave PS: I was thinking, I start watching the video with 4770 views, when I finished is at 5400, is incredible to think all those people experience and enjoyed this truly great story at the same time as me :)

I really want more videos explaining of the battles before and after this, all of the battles in the silmarillion summarized and organized in an easy way to find, this was really good. If by any chance the playlist exists and I cant find it I'd appreciate hints.

Great series Rainbow Dave! Thank you for that :) Maybe I missed it, but did you talk about Maedhros being delayed by a false alarm before the battle began? (which prevented him from lighting the beacon). I remember from last week's video you said he was delayed because he was betrayed and didn't yet know it, but I don't remember anything else on this matter (I know the tale, I was hoping you'll have some extra details that I didn't know about, as always).

This is where things get really depressing in the Silmarillion. And by the time Morgoth is defeated most of the magic and greatness is gone, and it's never coming back

When will you finish making videos for the rest of the stories found in the Silmillarion, such as the sack of Gondolin, the heroism of Glorifindil, Earendil's story and the story of Elrond and Elros? I am so looking forward to those videos, especially the recounting of Morgoth's reaction when the Star of Earendil first appeared in the sky. I hope the Silmillarion videos are finished soon. This channel is the best one out of all the other's Tolkien channels out there on KZbin. Awesome job!
