I’ve been to the Bay of Pigs. My wife went diving there. It’s a beautiful place. A marine park now I believe. I saw the remains of the U2 that was shot down over Cuba during the Missile Crisis, it’s on display in Havana. Good Video. I like that there was no conspiracy stuff here. Just history.

“Tragic Caribbean Misadventure” is a weird way to say failed invasion of a sovereign nation.

The world is full of spin-doctor doublespeak. When we take it as normal then the propaganda knob gets set to 11.

The bay of pigs only escalated Cuba to lean with the Soviets. That was what lead to the Cuban missile crisis. It also escalated Castro’s presidential power to near president for life title.

Theodore Roosevelt was the youngest person to be elected president.
@gerryvalaitis16 сағат бұрын
He was vice president when he was elevated to president in 1901 due to the assassination of McKinley. He wasn't officially elected to the office until 1905 when he was 45.

Safe to say a whole lot of other, ahem, "misadventures" could have been avoided if certain people had simply, I don't know, fostered a relationship with Castro and Cuba, instead of just deciding they knew best what their appropriate fates should be. Man, were huge swaths of the 20th century just *so* dumb.
@chrisperez98544 сағат бұрын
Castro didn’t want better relations, he wanted to be the guy who stood up to the U.S.
@ericthompson39824 сағат бұрын
@chrisperez9854 I don't think that's 100% true. There is some truth to it, but he was also aware that it would be dumb to just be antagonistic to the *massive* superpower directly to the north. There were elements in government and CIA (ahem, Bush Sr.) who decided that Castro and his cadre were too far left for their liking, and so pushed for the sugar embargo, and that was one of the early antagonistic steps. Guevara and Castro both could have been defanged by fostering a relationship, instead of making them boogeyman. It would have spared a ton of the banana republic nonsense that was to come.
