As someone who lives on the Chesapeake Bay, I must say the only unrealistic aspect of this movie is the locals being honestly surprised about deadly parasites in the bay.

Barry Levinson: I was approached to do a documentary about the Chesapeake Bay. I started doing research and found there was already a great Frontline doc, but nobody cares-people say, "It's polluted, so what?" I said no. But a few months later, I thought, "We've gathered all this research; why don't we tweak it for a theatrical release? We can scare an audience with a story that is 80 to 85 percent science and facts."

Guys, there was an outbreak of a virus in Chesapeake Bay, but it wasn't like this. The parasite in this movie is real, but it doesn't eat humans or run that fast. Turns 10 today! I remember watching it back at my second house For a found footage film it's a gruesome yet very atmospheric chiller of a horror movie in this genre of filmmaking It's a type of fear that makes people question the validity of what's actually happening so naturally theories are thrown around, has the residents of this bay town wonder if recreational activities like swimming is even safe The movie does a good job being suspenseful, making hearing audio bits much scarier without seeing it, producing a chilling score to boost things, and enhancing our fears of ecological nature It works thanks to some clever camerawork, interspersed footage, and tons of shivering, riveting scenes of how things go south so quickly The combination of social commentary and body horror is a good mixture that will make you feel uneasy, certainly did the job for me Eco-activists and found footage enthusiasts will get their fill

+Justin Gamino I've watched this movie a total of eight times and it is by far one of the only Horror movies that scared me the most because water getting polluted really happens often in the real world. I live in the Philippines. For me this movie was more of an Eco Horror film since it is focused on the Horror that happens when pollution strikes and it is a found footage, Eco Body Horror film since the moral lesson of this movie is never dump anything in the water that can cause pollution. Here in the Philippines, the Manila Bay's water is very dirty and it is filled with trash and loads of garbage as well. Some people should watch this movie to learn to stop pollution because what was shown in the movie could happen in real life when Pollution strikes. Because in the movie the mutated parasites wiped out the town of Chesapeake Bay since the water was contaminated from the Chicken Excrement and chemicals dumped in the Bay. For me this movie should be shown to some people so that areas that are polluted can be fixed and clean and there will be no issues after.

It's no zombie movie. The parasite larvae enters the body through digestion or through wounds and starts to grow inside its host. From them on, the Isopods starts eat their host alive and very slowly. This is whole cycle is very painful and disturbing for the victim. The reason why the lady grabbed her, was out of sheer panick. Maybe hoping to be released from her suffering like those other guys. Hope it clears things up for you.
