One of the least known facts about The Boys, is just how hard Carl worked to : keep Mike under control 2. Get Al to concentrate onstage --his attention wandered easily 3. Get BW to do something, anything musical 4. Keep Dennis from imploding onstage. Carl was THE responsible member, the one who oversaw everything, & everyone, because someone had to, & no one else could/ would. He was the heart of the group, & I miss him just as much today as I did in '98, when we lost him. Wolfsky9 67 y/o

Funny you said that about Alan. I have the same, (I think) issue. ADHD. Yes, my mind does seem to wander about. (And, wonder.) (Please, let me Wonder!) It is funny, I grew up listening to The Beach Boys, but it wasn't until recently, that I started watching them sing. I found out, that I was, most of the time, singing along with Mike. But, my voice is more suited to Carl and the great Brian. (Later on, Matt Jardine.) I'm pretty sure that Someone Above, needed an awesome voice, in His Choir, and then, we lost Carl. Hope Carl is doing heavenly solo work! Hope I can listen in, when. steve

You know, when I was a little kid in the early-mid 90s, I loved the Beach Boys. In fact, the first song I can actually remember hearing on the radio was Kokomo, oddly enough... Carl died just a few days before my 10th birthday and I was so sad. Carl had been my favorite member of the group at that time because he was the best singer and he seemed like the nicest dude. The Beach Boys honestly died with him. It's a damn shame what Mike Love turned it into.

What can I say? There simply are not enough superlatives to describe Carl Wilson's beautiful voice and stage presence. I grew up listening to the wonderful music of the Beach Boys and I never imagined a world without Carl performing those great Brian Wilson tunes. Today, more than 15 years after his death, I miss seeing/hearing Carl more than ever. Rest in peace, Great Man. You'll never be forgotten.

@@Wolfsky9 By the time our family of 4 (13 & 15 yo sons; 15 yo had a nice summer job at Kings Dominion, an amusement park in Doswell, VA - not far from where lived. And we bought season’s passes for the first time!! This was in ‘90 or ‘91 & the BB were coming to play a concert, which I thought would be a great 1st concert for our young teens. And it was great!! But even I had never seen them (they had gotten popular while I was in HS)..,,so I didn’t know what to expect!!! The music was great, although Dennis had passed already,,,,although we didn’t know it. I do wish now that I’d seen them more times before Carl passed. But going to concerts just wasn’t a high priority!!! I’m now pushing 75, my hubby of 40+ yrs passed 6 yrs ago; my sons are now 44 & 46 w/ their families + my 4 grandkids….& time is flying!!! But I wish now that I could take my grandkids to see one more BB CONCERT before someone else passes on. So don’t wait people, go one more time before it’s too late!!! Some of the best music we will ever hear!!! ❤️❤️😎😎💕💕

Carl Wilson was the guy who kept the Beach Boys together from the time he was only 17. His voice was out of this world. He also composed wonderful songs and played a great guitar. He helped save Brian's LIFE, went to court twice in Brian's behalf so Brian could get rid of the man who kept him like a puppet on a string. Also Carl loved all people. He had in his band when he went solo, a black woman singer, a black bass player and one his best friends, his brother in law who is Philipeno.

Watching this , now 33 years old vid, I am still reminded just how much Carl meant to the Boys, & why to this day & always, his loss will never be forgotten. As I've said in other entries, this past summer, I could not get myself to go to the reunion concerts, knowing that if I did, I'd be comparing the music to when Carl led the group, both on /offstage. The last time I saw them was in Nov. '97, Thousand Oaks CA., & all we did that night was talk about & miss Carl Wilson. Wolfsky9, 66 y/o

I could not agree w/you more Wolfsky! Am just down the road from you in OC, so the reunion tour had been playing all around us; several friends asked me to go as they knew I loved the Beach Boys. Told them all no & they could not understand. I explained that w/out Carl there, it is just not worth going any more. And they said, "but Brian is back!" And I told them "He isn't CARL!!"

In my opinion, this video is a shining example of the importance of Carl Wilson in the Beach Boys from the late '60s through his passing. He stepped up. He kept things rolling. Al was marginalized and seemed relegated to singing lame covers by this time. Mike was growing more nasally by the day and contributed nothing of lyrical substance. Brian, bless him, was still capable of brilliance but was unable/unwilling to really follow through (although I am a big fan of The Beach Boys Love You). Almost more than anything, that voice of Carl's was the glue that held everything together. In the late '70s, Mike Love managed to elbow Carl out of leadership and into a solo career, and in the process, led the Beach Boys through the worst, most artistically bankrupt era of their career. I can handle Mike and Al if the Wilsons are there to balance them out. The MIU album suffered greatly because of very small contributions from the brothers. Carl was the heart and soul, the spiritual leader, and had the voice that made it all worth hearing during this time for me.
@TooCooFoYou
@TooCooFoYou 9 жыл бұрын
+jfrey1 Nothing of lyrical substance? Mike Love wrote a majority of the Beach Boys lyrics and has proven to be a really good writer. "All I Wanna Do", "Good Vibrations", "Darlin'", and "Warmth of the Sun" are some of his great examples.

"Oh Darlin" is the only song on "Keepin' the Summer Alive" in which I can hear Dennis's voice. You can hear him singing harmony during the bridge. I've read elsewhere that he appears on only one other track on the album (playing drums or keyboards, don't remember which), but I don't recall which song that was.

Al Jardine is the intellectual of the Beach Boys. Bruce Johnson is is another intelligent guy. Bruce tells a story about a time they were in Hawaii. A lady asked him if they were the Beach Boys. He said, "Yes." She asked, "Will you bring us two towels and two chairs?" When Glen Campbell was a member of our church, he brought Alan Jardine to a service. May they all find Christ.

+Sammy Boy If you listen to Mr. Jardine's discussions of imagery and technical music ideas, you will hear him interpret the Beach Boys' music on a deeper level. Bruce Johnson''s stories and accounts of the Beach Boys' experiences and discussions are also enjoyable and entertaining. But I always get depth and meaning from Mr. Jardine's commentaries.

Brian Wilson was and is still a musical genius. His brothers Carl and Dennis really contributed to the band. Al Jardine had far more talent than the man most sane people love to hate and that's Mike Love. He was the killer of the original Smile. There is a reason Pink Floyd used Bruce Johnston to help with the vocals on "The Wall" Believe it not, they also used Toni Tennille on that album. Bruce had a full grasp on harmonizing. Brian was a great teacher, too.

@kjetin99 Saved his life initially, yes. Then tried to steal his life, and did a pretty good job of it. Carl and Dennis always had Brian's back, not just Dennis. I blame Landy for Brian's deficiencies that he's now living with. I would have liked to meet Landy in a dark alley and do a little bit to him to "thank" him for what he did to Brian.

Carl wilson was such a good person and singer, and of course Brian was so talented and I get tired of people putting down Mike he was okay, he's an intelligent guy. He wrote alot of lyrics. Brian was going to call Good vibrations, Vibrations, and Mike added the word good in front. Can you imagine it any other way. Jardine was so talented and seemed like a great guy, I love his Lady Linda. Bruce is solid. Dennis was so fun early but he sure picked the wrong people to hang with, to bad.

I'm a huge fan and actually have an old b&w crowd photo of my 11-year old self at a Beach Boy concert. This video is interesting because it is historical and there are some nice insights to their creative process. However, I am not a fan of this song. It's beautiful in it's own way but it just plods along like it's underwater. Plus the Beatles wrote a huge hit called "Oh Darling!" in 1969 which unfortunately makes this one sound even more boring. Without Carl the BBs would never have made it. And oh yeah, Mike Love has always been a tool.

I saw the beach boys live at boston college in about 1973. I was at an angle somewhat behind them about 25 feet away. One of the best memories of my life. They were sweating and hot. Carl was pissed off at Mike the entire show. Mike kept acting like he was going to sing Barbara Anne. Mike would start of sininging Ba Ba Ba Ba Barbara Anne just to get the crowd to go nuts...then he would just stop and not sing the song. By about the 5th time of pulling that carl looked like he wanted to kill him

It's interesting to hear Bruce mentioned that he did not want to over produce the album, but from where I'm sitting, that is exactly what he did. Keeping the Summer Alive could have been a hit, but Bruce's over the top production (especially the background vocals) made it sounds absolutely childish.

If ever a guy benefitted from facial hair, it's Bruce--what a difference! He should have stayed with this look. --As for BW, Carl & DW, it's important to remember, CONTEXT is everything. The group is like a kaliedascope: what you see & know, depends on where you stand, when you look & listen. Carl & BW had a difficult time of it: he--BW--could never--would never-forgive Little Bro for saving his life, & holding the group together. Wolfsky9

Not exactly a hip guy, nor do I like his writing, but Bruce Johnston is a talented producer in his own right, no doubt.

gotta say that I love carl solo more than ed carter's solo used live and I think on the record, I could be wrong on the record thing, but regardless I love carl solo.

Don't forget Dennis had a lot of talent, whereas Mike really can only rhyme words ;-)

This Tune is beautiful Carl ,Bruce & Al. Mike Love with his Nasal singing is not popular @ 5.39 & 5:44 (I cringe } I feel that Dennis would have made the Flow to perfection.

@tatelabianca you're right and wrong. your right about how his mother influenced the song but Mike added the word good, Brian was just going to call it vibrations..you better get your facts straight.

Mike Love was and still is the Sanity of the Beach Boys, he understood very early on how to keep things in there proper perspective. Love is a Genius in his own God given talent..A true Conerstone of the Beach Boys.

thats most of it - maybe Feel Flows has that solo near the end (or was it Long Promised Road - try those) - Ed Carter (and Dave Marks for that matter) are both much better lead guitarists - wish they utlized them more over the years....

Pros are nervous with Carl when on stage. They do not want a look from him, cause it means you missed the tune.
