For sheer harmonic genius, it's absolutely impossible to top the Beach Boys. They wrote the book for modern rock harmonies.

How much innovation and creativity can you infuse into one pop song? Brian Wilson answers the challenge with this fabulous song.

I've just had an epiphany on this song. . .that theremin-it gives an otherworldly vibe to the song, almost like these people are from outer space. Really "out there", as they used to say back in the day, but the selection of that theremin was a brilliant move and definitely part of what you remember after you've heard this song.

"[T]he trancendant power of music."-wow! Going to remember THAT line!

transcendent is basically an experience that cannot be captured in our daily earthly dense body . it must be set free to a higher realm hence meditation or psychedelics or in this case musical vibrations and poetry. it becomes transcendental.

In that middle bridge part, with the piano which sounds like a harpsichord. . .there is someone in the band imitating the Theremin on their vocals. It's a bit in the background, but you can definitely hear it. Perfect touch!

Vocally one of the most adventurous songs in all of rock history! Of all of the bands of their time, maybe the Beach Boys are tops amongst stiff competition (i.e., the Beatles)?

One of the best-produced and written songs of all-time. Still ahead of its time almost 60 years later! So many other brilliant songs by the Boys. Not just the early stuff. Try "Feel Flows" and "Surf's Up" from the 1970s. Or the more recent "From There to Back Again." Nobody wrote/produced like Brian Wilson and the boys. And of course, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" from the same era as "GV" is another brilliant multi-part song.

The members of THE BEATLES will say that the songs "God Only Knows" (from the album 'Pet Sounds') and "Good Vibrations" (from the album 'Smiley Smile') by THE BEACH BOYS are the two most beautiful works to have been composed and recorded throughout the history of pop rock. Thanks.

When I was a kid in San Diego this song would play on our way to the beach in the summer. Good Vibrations means good memories to me. (Before society collapsed).

And a theramin! The instrument from the black and white horror movies and early alien sci-fi movies from the 50's. The sound of this instrument was used in those movies to make an eery psychic landscape, and it has a rather "weird" sound to it in this song, and it works. Somehow it fits in with the rest of the soundscape of this song.

Excellent reaction, covering so many elements of this wonderful song. Congratulations! If you see the Beach Boys perform this sing live, on The Ed Sullivan Show, for example, you'll see them use a slide guitar instead of a theremin (sp?).

Mike Love wrote most of the lyrics. Brian Wilson came up with the idea of "vibrations," - feelings you can't hear or see. Brian, as a boy, asked his mom why a dog barked at him, even thought he did nothing to provoke the dog. His mom told him sometimes they just pick up vibrations from people.

That little harpsichord-like piano bridge in the middle is rather psychedelic! I see you giving it a strange look when you first heard it!

When I Grow Up To Be A Man is the only song Iknow of which addresses a boy's contemplation of his future; God Only Knows is Paul McCartney's favorite Beach Boys tune; and In My Room is my personal favorite. I'd love for you to react to all three of them!

Three bands that changed the way music was written and recorded were the Beatles, Pink Floyd and The Beach Boys. Music for the following decades would have been so much different without albums like Sgt. Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon and Pet Sounds. The impact The Beach Boys had on other musician can't be overstated.

BTW, I believe your pronunciation of "Theremin" is correct. It looks like a French name, and "th" in French is pronounced "t".
