Brian Wilson was/is a Musical Genius.

This recording was made with the Wrecking Crew. Altogether they spent six weeks recording it, back in 1966. If you're really interested in music of the day check out The Wrecking Crew History which runs about 47 minutes. The Wrecking Crew was used to doing four or five sessions a night and they were the studio musicians for everyone who was anyone, altogether they played on 40 number one hits, but Brian Wilson could afford to take his time and pay for all those extra hours in the studio for this song.

Brian Wilson is an actual Musical Genius, he heard it then created it by assembling the musicians. Only a few composers in history have this ability

Good Vibrations was recorded on two 4-track machines that were electronically synced together by their recording engineer. It was recorded in at least 3 different studios in southern California. The different recordings were spliced together then mixed. It was cobbled together from about 90 hours of session tape. But yes they recorded in the analog fashion to get that 90 hours of session material with the help of the electronic gadgetry of the day that produced effects like reverb, etc...however the technology ran on vacuum tubes as opposed to digital methods.

Has to be one of the most famous and iconic recorded track of all time. At this time the Beatles and the Beach Boys were neck and neck upping the ante for music creativity. However you want to look at it, this is such a tremendous song; nothing like it before or since!

The musical genius behind The Beach Boys is Brian Wilson. To get a better understanding (if you're interested), I highly recommend the film Love and Mercy. It delves deeply into his struggles with severe mental illness, and coming out the other side as a survivor.

What you're hearing here isn't live at all. This song was notorious for taking several months to record, re-dubbing and re-mixing all the parts to get this final version. Then they did the visuals you see here and combined the audio and video. It looks convincing but the audio is nowhere close to "live" here. From Wikipedia: "The making of "Good Vibrations" was unprecedented for any kind of recording. Building on his approach for Pet Sounds, Wilson recorded a surplus of short, interchangeable musical fragments with his bandmates and a host of session musicians at four different Hollywood studios from February to September 1966, a process reflected in the song's several dramatic shifts in key, texture, instrumentation and mood. Over 90 hours of tape was consumed in the sessions, with the total cost of production estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars. Band publicist Derek Taylor dubbed the unusual work a "pocket symphony". It helped develop the use of the studio as an instrument and heralded a wave of pop experimentation and the onset of psychedelic and progressive rock. The track featured a novel mix of instruments, including jaw harp and Electro-Theremin, and although the latter is not a true theremin, the song's success led to a renewed interest and sales of theremins and synthesizers."

The beatniks were long gone by this time, this was the early hippie era and The Beach Boys were introducing some psychedelia to their music. The musical complexity of this song is off the charts (pardon the pun), both vocally and instrumentally.

Only one word: Masterpiece! No composition of THE BEACH BOYS can be associated with the disenchanted spirit called "beatnik". Until 1965, their songs were classified under a subgenre "surf pop music". Starting with the albums 'Pet Sounds' (1966) and 'Smiley Smile' (1967), THE BEACH BOYS carried out a real musical revolution and took the psychedelic-inspired turn, thus becoming part of the new hippie movement. The members of THE BEATLES will say that the songs "God Only Knows" (from the album 'Pet Sounds') and "Good Vibrations" (from the album 'Smiley Smile') by THE BEACH BOYS are the two most beautiful works to have been composed and recorded throughout the history of pop rock. Thanks.

Multi-track recording back then -- top flight -- was 4 track tape. Bands like The Beach Boys and The Beatles pushed the boundaries of available technology. Recording companies responded by improving their equipment so that 16 and 24 track were common in studios less than a decade later. Beatnik was a name given to fans of Beat Poetry of the late 1950's. They were more or less the vanguard of some of the social changes that took place in the sixties. John Lennon was one of those fans and reportedly called for the changed spelling in their name. "Good Vibrations" is The Beach Boy's masterpiece. Be sure to go back and listen to the single because this only touches on that. And dig that theremin too!

@mikecaetano 8-track recorders were commonly used by 1965; frequently artists would record songs like this one using two 8-track recorders, whether they were making a mono or a stereo recording.

There was single track recording and overdubbing but change was coming. Perhaps you've heard of 8-track? Then Joe Tarsia installed a 24-track studio at Sigma Sound for the rhythm section.in Philadelphia. About 1970. Behold the start of Philly soul and the magical musicians who created it. Also Sigma had Direct Input for the rhythm section.

It was REAL TALENT, ACTUALLY PERFORMING. I HATE that you see their performance as "analog". . .NO. . .Actually, stepping up to a "mike" and actually performing is the way it should be. I'm an artist, and the people, for example, who just use Ai to do their "artwork" for them aren't really artists in my mind. In music, artwork, or whatever, DO IT YOURSELF, and let's see what you've got!!!!!

This isn't the actual song. This is a series of recording sessions that have been edited together for the video. It's too bad you're not actually listening to the song in the order it was intended to be heard. You're hearing different parts of the song in something other than the sequence they were meant to be heard. But again, with reaction channels, you get that sort of thing because the hosts of these reaction channels know absolutely nothing about the music. And of course you would never know that the drummer you see is NOT the drummer of the Beach Boys. It's Hal Blaine of The Wrecking Crew, the core LA studio musicians that played on hundreds of hit records. You'd do yuorself well to watch the documentary film "The Wrecking Crew." It's available on KZbin. Educate yourself.
