Holland is the 19th studio album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released January 8, 1973 on Brother/Reprise. It is their first album recorded without Bruce Johnston since 1965, their second with Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar, and their final studio album created under the de facto leadership of Carl Wilson and manager Jack Rieley. The LP was originally packaged with a bonus EP, Mount Vernon and Fairway, which consisted of a 12-minute fairy tale written and produced by Brian and Carl Wilson.

This was always one of my favorite albums. Particularly "Steamboat" which is just phenomenal, "California Saga", + the hauntingly beautiful "Only With You" Dennis came into his own,as a writer, with this B.B. album. Carl's voice on "Only With You" is gorgeous. You + I totally agree on everything. Bet that makes your day!😅 Can't wait for your next review!

Thanks for the nice comment! 🙂 Carl's voice with Dennis' piano on Only With You is one of the most memorable musical combos for sure of this album.

Thanks for the compliments. Holland was that one special album for me that I loved the most when I went through the whole Beach Boys discography the first time. I think it's one of the few Beach Boys albums that didn't involve a missed opportunity when it comes to the music itself (material and song selection) and the packaging. Though I think switching Only With You with Carry Me Home would improve the album as a whole and make it their greatest of all.

Any album with a song like "Funky Pretty" is a masterpiece. For me maybe their lsat masterpeice (If i look away from certain songs from "Love You" "Adult Child" and "L.A. Album" (Which has their finest song ever "Shortening Bread" !!!!) Nice mentions of Jack Rieley, be shure to check out his album from 1975 : Jack Rieley & Machiel Botman - Western Justice (Excerpts From A Diary)

"Holland": well, it's a step up from "Carl And The Passions: So Tough". "The Trader" is worth the price of admission alone. It's a FANTASTIC song! One of the very best ever done by The Beach Boys. Other than "The Trader", "California Saga/California" and "Sail On Sailor" are good as well. The rest? They're... OK, I guess. They are all just... there. I only listen to them if I'm listening to the entire album. I know "Mount Vernon And Fairway" was a separate disc when "Holland" came out, but for me it's something you listen to once in the interest of completeness, but I don't need to hear it again. Maybe someday I'll discover the artistic merit of the story. But... sorry. Right now, I think it's just dumb. For me, The Beach Boys pick it back up in quality with their next album "15 Big Ones".

This album gets some praise from BB fans. Not from me. Other than Sail On Sailor, it strikes me as a lot of meandering fill. It was an experiment gone wrong and was eventually completed in Los Angeles. By and large the 1970s were a dismal period for the band.

I couldn't disagree more. I listen to their 70's output much more than the 60's.

@@SoundofFree Smiley Smile, 15 Big Ones, So Tough, MIU, Love You...all very weak. Nearly cost them their careers. Nostalgia and Endless Summer saved them.

@@lynntempleton9640Can’t believe you’d put Holland in the same category as those. It’s a gorgeous album.

M.I.U. is weak but those others not so much.

@@DanimalistBoot Believe it. Other than Sail On Sailor and Funky Pretty (the only Brian Wilson credits, and he was in rough shape), the song writing is abysmal. I described it above as "meandering fill" and I think that's accurate. Carl, Al and Dennis were simply not songwriters. Mount Vernon and Fairway was-- ummm, what was it? But, that's my take on the album. Others, including yourself, disagree. No problem with that.
