Darren Perry discusses the historical and social events surrounding the Bear River Massacre in Northern Utah. Darren Parry is the Chairman of the Northwestern Band of the Shoshone Nation. Darren serves on the Board of Directors for the American West Heritage Center, in Wellsville, Utah, the Utah State Museum board and serves on the Advisory Board of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In 2017 he received the Esto Perpetua Award, given to the person who preserves and promotes history in the State of Idaho. He is the only person from Utah to receive that award. He attended the University of Utah and Weber State University and received his Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education, with an emphasis on History. His passions in life are his family including his Tribal family. The story of the Bear River Massacre and the outcomes of that horrific event need to be remembered. He is currently working hard to raise money and awareness so an Interpretive Center can be built at the massacre site. It is important that the Shoshone perspective is heard. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My great great great grandmother was a little girl who’s life was spared miraculously. The Bear river massacre was horrible and shouldn’t be overlooked. What an injustice to our people! 😢

My family had the privelege of meeting Darren and attending the Bear River Massacre commemoration last January. Even now, I'm watching this TED Talk in preparation to interview him for a school assignment in social psychology. Let all this be a testament to the importance of hearing both sides to the story.

Hi Darren, Thank you for sharing your story. I want to honor your people by reading your book so that your history will be told and not forgotten. I know what you mean about the victors writing the history. I severely abused when I was a child. The adults who did this to me have silenced me and made me out to be a liar. All the truth that I have brought forward about this abuse has been pushed to the wayside and forgotten. I am the only one in my family who remembers it.

It's wonderful to hear the truth come to light. The description has an error, the Bear River Massacre happened in Southeast Idaho, not Northern Utah .
