Today we are looking at one of the grandfathers of the giant monster movie the movie that was one of godzilla biggest inspiration. The first movie that the master of stop motion Ray Harryhausen was in charge of so this is a really important movie and it’s the beast of 20,000 fathoms how does it hold up today? well lets take a look at the beast from 20,00 fathoms and doing some maths that 22 miles so this is the beast of 22 miles forget to comment and subscribe

Loved the review! It was hilariously on point, especially about the lead male and FEEEEEEmale actors! Bonus fact 1, the Air Force Colonel, played by Kenneth Tobey, played a different Air Force Captain in 1951's The Thing From Another World. If the character had kept the same name, it could have made a shared universe thing...oh well. Bonus fact 2, the dinosaur skeleton is the one used in the Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn movie, Bringing Up Baby. And FINALLY! Godzilla Versus Megalon coming up next!

One reason I like a lot of these old movies is the list of future stars or faces we wouldn't recognize for years afterward. This film has King Donovan (Invasion of the Body Snatchers), Steve Brodie (Donovan's Brain), Michael Fox (Riders to the Stars), Ross Elliot (Tarantula), Lee Van Cleef (The Good, The Bad & The Ugly), Roy Engel (Kingdom of the Spiders) and James Best (Roscoe P. Coltrane from "The Dukes of Hazzard). There are even voice-overs from Vera Miles and Merv Griffin(!)

Fun fact: the sniper who shoots the Rhedosaurus at the end is played by pre-fame western star Lee Van Cleef. So he was typecast as sharpshooters before he even did the Dollars trilogy with Clint Eastwood. Go figure. Technically, Ray Harryhausen did some, if not most, of the animation for Mighty Joe Young four years earlier, but his mentor Willis O'Brien still took most of the credit. I adore Harryhausen, but I think most of his black & white 50s films were forgettable B-movies that were only redeemed by his contribution. It wasn't until The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) that he finally got to work with actors, story lines and production value that were interesting enough to keep us viewers from getting bored in between the monster scenes. And I agree: I've always been of the opinion that Godzilla (1998) wouldn't have gotten nearly as much backlash if they just named it after The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. It clearly has more in common with this movie.

What Gojira and 20,000 fathoms both have in common: - giant dinosaur-like monster awoke by h-bomb testing - giant monster sinking ships - giant monster attacking city - giant monster spreading illness (radiation in G, disease in 20KF) - 2 men in heavy suits use powerful weapon to kill monster (oxygen destroyer in G, some radioactive thingy in 20KF) More similaries in both films production: - Gojira was originally written down as "Beast from 20,000 leagues under the sea" - Gojira originally was going to destroy a lighthouse - The rhedosaurus from 20,000 fathoms was originally supposed to breathe fire, similar to Gojira who breaths atomic breath.

I guess I seem to be one of those who is more profoundly interested in this one, if mainly just because, again, I am able to put myself in the context of the times. I understand that after so many years of monster movies that followed this one, it's easy to see why a whole selection of others - including the original GOJIRA a year later - would do this one better (although GODZILLA '98 was just a shit ripoff), but this low-budget indie, picked up for distribution by Warner Bros., was ahead of its time for establishing the tropes of the genre, carrying the monsters of lost worlds into the nuclear age (KING KONG was re-released the previous year, and made more money than its blockbuster take back in 1933, although at this point the lost world theme was starting to get rustic) while also marking the cinematic debut of several artists, Ray Harryhausen included. Harryhausen didn't merely succeed his teacher, Kong creator Willis O'Brien, following the end of his apprenticeship with MIGHTY JOE YOUNG in 1949, for which both he and O'Brien shared their only Oscar win for Special Effects. He surpassed O'Brien in breakthrough methods of practical effects (including scenes where the Rhedosaurus appears to be walking towards the camera while shots of the city background are moving behind him - in the previous movies, the background was usually captured still and flat, and all scenes featuring the monster effects were also shot flat). Also, this was the first adaptation of a short story by the great Ray Bradbury, who also wrote the treatment for Jack Arnold's IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE released later that same year. Both Rays were best friends, having first met at a sci-fi convention back in 1938, and I can't help but feel that this was an unofficial collaboration in a sense, given that the filmmakers originally were planning to make a monster movie not knowing till later that the plot was unintentionally lifted from Bradbury's "The Fog Horn" after which they had to get the rights to the story to get the movie made. Also, the actual director, Eugene Lourie, made his directorial debut with this film, having worked as an production designer for previous films made by the cream of crop of French filmmakers including Jacques Becker, Rene Clair and Jean Renoir. He went on to direct several creature-features, including THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK, and GORGO (the last one made as a response to the end of BEAST, when his daughter cried at the Rhedosaurus's death). Eventually he left directing, feeling that he was being typecast to helm only these kind of films, but he did get one Special Effects Oscar nomination for KRAKATOA, EAST OF JAVA (1969) and was inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't point out further that BEAST, as an independent film made for only $240K by a small production company, Mutual Films, and picked up by a major studio for distribution to gross over $5 million, was proof that the studios, while owning the theaters at the time, were struggling to meet audience demands and had to start looking beyond Hollywood's backlots for an emerging network of filmmakers and outsider talent that were dedicating themselves to making films outside the bounds of big-league studio Hollywood (while still under both the Hays Production Code and Cold War hysteria). BEAST seems to anticipate the future of independent horror cinema, with indie classics including THE BLOB, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, HALLOWEEN and many more to follow.

We actually have a famous American Tall Tale here about seafaring giant Alfred Bulltop Stormalong, who was at age 10 already 2 fathoms tall (legend has it that his initials A.B.S. would later be used after his first ship voyage to mean "able bodied seaman" for aspiring sailors to use in signatures when seeking a shipping profession). Stormalong as an adult grew to reach about the same height as a whale standing on end that he had to build his own giant masted skipper to go on his seafaring adventures! (Which naturally meant that the ship, the COURSER, had far more crew members than any masted schooner at the time!) On one of his earlier adventures in young adulthood, he even got to fight a Kaiju, the Kraken!
