The Beast is a coaster that I think the layout doesn't matter. It's like it's taking you on an adventure! Not to mention the insanity of that final helix.

The building at the beginning of the Beast line looks like a restaurant because it originally was. Where the vending machines are today was a order window that you could buy food like hot pretzels, pizza, etc.....but most notably BEER. Even when I was a kid in the 80's and 90's there could be a 3 hour + line for the Beast on busy days. Those footprints were painted for the line. So you might have been in line an hour or more before getting to the snack stand, I think it was called Beast Canyon, so you could refuel and get a few beers to keep you happy in line for another 2 hours :) As new coasters were built and the Beast line wasn't as full it didn't make sense to keep the snack shack opened. A back to back of Beast/Vortex was amazing in the 90's.

Really fantastic video! Thank you! I grew up with this coaster. When I was 5 in 1979 my dad took me on a charter flight to get pix for the promotional materials. I rode it first time in 1981 at night (also rode the original bat that day). The beast used to have buzz bars and that's why it says don't stand up at the top of the lift because you used to be able to. The mid course breaks are awful nowadays. Used to barely feel it. In the 80's you'd come out of that long tunnel and hit the first right bank and the wheels would make this awesome loud chattering sound felt like you'd fly off the tracks. And the helix tunnel in the finale is one of the best elements on any coaster. I've ridden many many rollercoasters now that I'm 50, but the beast will always, always be the best. My 16 yr old son thinks so to. 👍

Kings Island is my home park and you are so right about how hype we locals get in the que at night! Me and my friends do it as often as we can when we go we once had this amazing conversation with a woman who had grown up going to KI and her Son she told us so many amazing stories. The Ride ops especially get hype at night! Also they still stop the coaster before fireworks but you can get in line till 11.

Before I became an enthusiast my friends and I would always end up with enthusiasts beside us in line. We would hype up the beast night ride as the best thing in the park. When we got off the normal reaction from them was yeah didn’t believe you but you were right.

Great review of a classic ride. I get that you rate it different at night. I agree completely! I got five rides on the Beast in a 24 hour span this summer. Before that, the last time I road it was before the partial retrack a few years ago. The ride was so rough that summer that it hurt. I threw out my back and had bruised ribs, but still stuck around for an epic night ride. This year, the intensity was just as I remembered, but the ride did not beat me up nearly as much. Whatever track work they did worked well and has held up for at least two seasons. I’m not a fan of the weird trims in the middle of the first half though. BTW, All but one of my 5 rides this year were (mostly) comfortable. The really rough ride was in row 7-the front of the third car. We bounced and jackhammered all over the place. 😂

I remember back when it first opened, the line made it half way down International Street. And the switch backs were still the same today, except I believe 1 area of switch backs were removed. Plus, the loading area, the first turn to the lift hill, and almost to the lift hill were on a shallow pond. The loading station did have a water feature like it was a mill. The pond was drained when Vortex was built. My first night ride was on a hot day that had a late day rain pass through. It cooled everything down for the night. But, on The Beast, that first tunnel hit you with a wall of damp coolness. I was lucky enough to ride it back in the day with buzz bars and a lot less trim brakes. Although I don’t have many coaster credits, that night ride has been the most memorable ride of any coaster I have ridden. And when I was young, the night ride thing wasn’t known as a big deal. I think coaster enthusiasts before social media knew and talked about it and it grown from there. The long straight section before the second tunnel used to be a lot less trimmed a long time ago. You used to really haul through the tunnel all the way to the second chain lift. It seemed like it would run almost halfway up the hill before the chain would catch. As for the wait for the fireworks, that has been going on for a while. I don’t think that policy will change. And the drones stage at the Vortex plot. I assume that will have to change at some point. I’m glad your very first ride was a night. Not too many start off that way, but that may be the best way to do it. And yes, row 17 is the magic seat. And…. Mostly Coasters LOVES The Beast❤

Going through the second and third tunnels in particular at night really makes you feel that the souls of the damned are trying to claw their way back from the depths. Even when nobody was screaming, those tunnels make a sound so shrill that it really sounds like terrified shrieks.

I've never experienced any airtime on Beast. It's not profiled for it and the excessive braking kills any chance of it ever happening. If you happen to get a brakeless ride, you may think you feel a little but Beast wasn't about airtime. It's about speed and power mostly and being isolated in the woods away from the park. It's actually more of a wooden runaway mine train on steroids than anything.

That’s strange I always get in line at 9:59 they always let me I was an operator on the beast so unless it’s a new rule that shouldn’t be the case but the beast is halted due to concerns that the debris from the fireworks could land in the beast and catch fire with ride grease.

The sharp banking right turn before the 2nd lift hill is what remember the most as a kid for some reason. That and the gradually increasing lean just before the helix. The leaning begins way before the turn.

That trim break originally didn’t exist. They had to add it on after because it was too intense

I still dont understand why the park closes The Beast during fireworks. If I'm not mistaken, the fireworks launch next to Orion's speed Hill.. and although that is near the shed on The Beast... I 100% rode Firehawk during fireworks which. feels just as close.. And with less certainty.. I think during Paramount days we rode during the fireworks.. I recall barely getting in line 3 minutes before a 10pm close as a kid... But there wasn't a wait for fireworks.. maybe nightly fireworks weren't always a thing lol Maybe that 2nd drop on The Beast isnt as protected from the fireworks as I percieve.
@pipepicasso81128 ай бұрын
I think there is a possibility of fireworks embers to float towards The Beast north section. The wind could flow to the southeast. They must have had a close call at some point.

A few notes about The Beast. On opening the theming was a strip mine that had been shut down after a violent attack from a beast in the woods. Now she is so famous that The Beast is its own theming. That long straight after the first drop USED to be a full block brake. Back in 2001 a train overshot the station wait and bumped into a train in the station. After an investigation it was found that the trains were going far beyond the designed speed and modifications were made. That included adding trims and notably for this discussion, removing the first block brake for a trim. The Beast used to be able to run 4 trains but only ever run 3. And a random fact, The Beast was originally supposed to run 4 bench PTC trains. That is why some of the air gates are in odd places. It was decided to run 3 bench trains last minute. Instead of buying new trains, park engineers modified the old trains. I don't know if 3 bench trains were ever ordered.

The weirdness I think comes from that the beast was not designed by engineers with computers trying to calculate exact G forces. It was relative amateurs putting something together and adapted to the landscape. Almost struggling in the dark. It’s not perfect, but it is unique

I've been a HUGE fan of the Beast since the late 80's early 90's!!! It originally used to go up to top speed of 80 mph and was actually 3 minutes long not 4 1/2 to 5 minutes like it is now and that's due to them slowing it down and the part you specified. The beast is a classic!!!! I'm a huge coaster buff and I love very long are times the higher the better for me but the beast will always hold a special place in my heart!!!! Once you've written it enough you know how to lean into the turns 😁

The magnetic trims have completely killed the ride. It used to hit 65mph with the skid brakes, now it only manages 57mph.
@Theplancopro8 ай бұрын
As a former op on the beast this is false it still reaches a top speed of 65 depending on weather conditions such as temperatures humidity moisture etc. but EVERY coasters top speed is affected by those factors also if your claim was you can tell such a big difference off of only 8 MPH I’m sorry such a minor change could ruin one of the worlds greatest coasters

It always had trims. When it opened in 1979, it had trims. The magnetic trims do the exact same thing as the skid brakes did, but over less distance. They're all in the same place as the originals.
