It took a lot of gear shifting to get the band, other than Dave Wakeling (who wrote it) and Everett Morton, to even record the song. Wakeling had it before The Beat formed. Steele didn't like it (it was too rock apparently) and for several years kept it off albums. Of course, they were excellent musicians, so when the record company and Wakeling threatening to record and release it as a solo effort finally forced their hand, the rest of the band could handle it. Good musicians are like that. Apparently, the song most of the band didn't want to do produces about 1/3 of all the royalties the band members get (the band credited all songs to the whole band no matter who actually wrote them).

@@manonymous4737 Both groups with out of this world vocalists. Roland Gift was a unique talent, too, but yes, Special Beat Service is one of the greatest albums, start to finish, I've ever heard. I think it was Siouxsie of the Banshees who trashed the album in a review all those years ago, especially Save It For Later. Today it's considered one of the era's greatest creations, recorded by Pete Townsend, too. Wonder if she recalls going public with that opinion.

@@davidmurray2539 I just didn’t like Roland Gift. He had this kind of muted horn quality to his voice that really got on my nerves (not sure how else to describe it). @NotBCT Жыл бұрын
Not really. Neither Dave nor David are plugged in, Everette isn't really hitting his drums, and most of the string players are miming their playing (and are a little off the beat, so to speak). Not surprising for the era. Most studio TV sound equipment couldn't handle the fidelities needed to process live music, even direct-input, without getting fried. Standard Operating procedure until the late 80s or even 90s was to have a backing track and have the bands lip synch. Of course, there were some exceptions where the show or studio had specialized equipment that could handle a live performance, like early SNL, but for most television shows of the era, it was easier to just play a backing track and have a "performance" rather than have all the technical issues and potential live disasters with the band actually playing.
