Congrats. I was there too. Their set was memorable. Did you know the US Festival stage still exists and resides in fantasyland at Disneyland? During a very hot 30th anniversary I went to Disneyland and sat in the audience for a live show at about the same distance and angle we were for the US Festival. Then a bizarre thing happened. It was an extremely hot day (not as hot as 1982 haha) but leaving that Disneyland show not only did it rain, it was a bizarre downpour drenching everyone to the bone at Disney. Prior to the Disney show I talked to a woman that worked on the show. I told her why I was there that particular day and asked her if she knew the story behind the stage. She did know and went on to confess she tried to go to the first US Festival but her mom wouldn’t let her go. Thanks

Written by Beat guitarist Dave Wakeling before the band was founded, the song nearly went unreleased due to opposition from bassist David Steele. After pressure from Wakeling and the record company, the song was ultimately recorded for the band's third album. The song has since become one of the band's most famous tracks and has been featured in various soundtracks and compilation albums.

I am reading the book ‘Not For You ‘ ( about Pearl Jam). According to the book, Eddie Vedder was at this very concert. @gregtanian 1988? This show was in 1982 or 83, and I got into them soon after that because of their heavy airplay on MTV. I'm not a young man. In 2015, I ran into Dave Wakeling's band at a restaurant near the venue near Detroit. I was too early to go in the auditorium, so I went to eat across the street, and there he was, high as a kite. I know that The Specials were great too, but between Dave, Roger's band, and FYC, who I also saw live, these guys had immense talent.

The temp that day was around 110 F (or 43.3 Celsius) right around the time The Beat came on to play. It wasn't the hot stage lights that was making the band sweat. They were one of the groups I specifically came to see that day and they didn't disappoint, which really says something about their dedication to give a great performance. Even though I drank as much water as I could, I remember that I lost over ten pounds in water weight that day, so I respect everyone who performed that day and especially the groups who performed in the afternoon.

Reminds me of seeing the Sugar Cubes (with Bjork) in a tiny, packed upstairs club - without air conditioning IIRC - in the middle of summer. It was crazy, crazy hot, but we didn't want the band to stop playing. So they didn't. The encore must have lasted an hour. They ran out of songs, then did alternate - e.g. country - versions of their songs. Now THAT'S dedication.

You gotta watch their Bands Reunited episode.. this really was a flash in the pan but in a good way. They got this group of people who’d not even be friendly outside of music.. and somehow got them to openly write music together. It was pure and no ego.. the goal was to make something neat/special. Unfortunately.. when this song blew up and they got a taste of money, everything changed. The highlight (for me) was their percussionist. I’ve never seen someone so humble.. he explains very clearly what happened. No blame or anything, it’s almost like he’s still surprised how quick money ruined a good thing. And fine young cannibal sucked.
