Great video! My ranking: 1 - RUBBER SOUL (A+) 2 - Help (A) 3 - Please Please Me (A) 4 - A Hard Day´s Night (A) 5 - Beatles For Sale (A-) 6 - With The Beatles (A-) COVER: A- I think they look way better without the warp (seriously). But of course its suits the begin of the psychedelic factor in their music. And the setting and the looks in their faces are well-chosen. A very cool take. PRODUCTION / ARRANGEMENT: A Finally they are taking the total potential out of the music. The arrangements suit the music better than ever before, the use of new instruments enlightens it. The mix is also well done. Nevertheless it isn´t as creative and various as on later albums. COMPOSITION: A+ Maturing completed. John´s got it out, Paul´s got it out, George´s got it out. Superb riffs, melodies, song structures and developments, different musical styles. And Ringo debuts as a co-songwriter on "What Goes On" which isn´t a big song but a very good number. MUSICIANSHIP: A The Beatles use and show their talents and hide their weaknesses with clever arrangements. LYRICS: A+ Except for "Run for Your Life" and "Drive My Car" which is somewhat silly, the lyrics are deep, thought-out or taking you on a journey . Especially John´s "Nowhere Man" showcases his intelligence and his typical philosophy. VOCALS: A+ It´s incredible how the Beatles sing together on this one, the harmonies, the changes of singers within one song are just thought-out perfectly. But also the singing of the individuals works very well as always. This is the first album which showed what an outstanding band the Beatles where and what their talents could make possible. Another strength of this particular album is the cooperation of the Beatles. This was before the big disputes which has the effect that the album leaves a fresh impression. My 3 fav songs: ARE YOU KIDDING ME? ;) ... "Think For Yourself", "Nowhere Man", "The Word" but I could have also chosen "Norwegian Wood", "In My Life", "Michelle" ... Least fav: none by far

Their first classic album, (although all of their previous albums were fabulous). Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man and In My Life would be in my top ten ever Beatles songs. Also love George's If I Needed Someone and Paul's You Won't See Me. It took me a lot of listens to appreciate What Goes On and Wait. Like you say Larry, Run For Your Life is the weak link due to the lyrics, but musically it's quite enjoyable. A+ It must have been a delight to get this for Christmas!

Hi Larry. Many critics say this album was a turning point in Beatles discography. And maybe is true because is a GREAT ALBUM with a different approach in songwriting. This one is called the Folk Beatles album, but it has great musical moments. The influence of Bob Dylan and the American folk scene is clear and was absorbed by the band. The production is really good and they were looking new sounds and inspiration. The cover is a classic. I Love this album. I will give a 10/10. My favorite songs are IN MY LIFE, IF I NEEDED SOMEONE, THE WORD and NORWEGIAN WOOD. My least favorite is I'M LOOKING THROUGH YOU. Only one song because it seems that What goes on is a Jinx's favorite Greetings from Monterrey, Mexico.

While you were talking about "I've Just Seen A Face" opening Rubber Soul and "Come Together" opening Abbey Road, I was thinking about the U.S. cassette version of Abbey Road and how it opened with Here Comes The Sun instead of Come Together. Come Together was the first track on side two instead. That's how I was used to hearing Abbey Road until I got it on CD. It took awhile to get used to not hearing Abbey Road open with two George Harrison songs back to back.

Larry, I love how goofy you can be during your videos! 🤣 when you fooled us about the album cover’s rating and then laughed about it afterwards, I legitimately started laughing out loud. “Rubber Soul” has always been one of my favorite Beatles albums ever- I love the variety of music on it and I love the songwriting skills of Paul and John and especially George who was finally starting to break through with his potential as a songwriter! This past Monday I actually went and saw the “It Was 50 Years Ago Today” with Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Denny Laine from Wings, Jason Scheff from Chicago, and Joey Molland of Badfinger performing “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver” in their entireties along with a selection of their own hits, and after seeing that concert all I’ve been listening to over and over again this week are those two Beatles albums. Sometimes you never realize how much love you have for certain music until you see them live. It wasn’t the Beatles performing the songs obviously but they made them sound note for note! My favorite song on “Rubber Soul” is probably either “Nowhere Man”, “If I Needed Someone” or “You Won’t See Me”, but every single song is a masterpiece!

I was hoping you’d sing Michelle to Jinx. But this was a cool story, so thank you. This record is a milestone. Giant leap. Apprenticeship mastered, here we go! A grown-up studio band making the recordings they want, not a boy band writing teen love songs for a stage show. Having lived with the US version since 1965, I was thrilled with the CD, the UK version. 4 more songs, one from each Beatle, all from my beloved Yesterday And Today record. Think For Yourself. Fuzz bass. Groovy. I adore What Goes On. Written waaaay back before recording fame, here’s the world’s most popular skiffle band, with expensive instruments. John’s pickin’ rhythm guitar gets me every time. I play some other favorites on ukulele: Nowhere Man is cool, it’s a folky song and works with strumming. If I Needed Someone is silly on uke, I need friends to try that soaring harmony. The ringing guitar on the record is glorious. I also play the beautiful In My Life. This song shows what learning to play a song reveals: the difference between the songwriting, and the sound of the recorded track. The song is so well written, it stands up with just one voice and 4-string chords. A rare song that feels like my own life, and I play it often. I also play Drive My Car, for 3 fun bits: clever story, the car-horn cord chord on the punch line, and the beep-beep n’beep beep yeah’s. The rest are also all favorites, except I never liked the lyrics to Run For Your Life, just the guitar. 1. Rubber Soul 2. Help! 3. Beatles For Sale …etc. chronologically back to the first. It’s going to be this pattern, except for the 1/2 albums coming up.

This album was the turning point when The Beatles changed from youth fad into the artists whose work will continue to resonate forever. Their constant imbibing of copious amounts of tea opened up their senses to new possibilities. If you look at their schedule in The Beatles Chronicle it is astounding how this great work of art was produced so quickly against a very tight deadline in between tours.

Excellent album! The start of what I consider The Beatles' middle era. "Rubber Soul" is one of my favorite albums of all-time. I give the nod to the UK edition, but the US one flows very well. My three favorite songs are: "Nowhere Man", "In My Life" and "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)". All John Lennon songs this time. I give this album an "A+". Probably the greatest album ever made up to that point.

Rubber Soul was one of the last Beatles albums I bought (in the early eighties) and obviously I already knew that the cover was great, and I liked the songs I knew from it, and it came between Help! and Revolver, which are both great albums. So I was really looking forward to it. And I found it... underwhelming. And I still do. I think it's definitely their weakest album where all the songs are self-penned. Don't get me wrong, there's some good stuff on this album. Norwegian Wood has a good, amusing lyric and is short enough to hold your attention. Michelle is a pretty much perfect pastiche with, again, an amusing lyric (and it sounds fantastic). I'm Looking Through You is Paul managing to write a barbed lyric that works. Wait sounds a little unfinished (it reminds me of the Anthology version of Got To Get You Into My Life in that respect) but I've always really liked the song. And like I'm Down, Drive My Car is aware of certain cheesy aspects of itself and still deploys them to amusing effect. I also like If I Needed Someone (but, you know, it's The Byrds, and it's a horrible lyric - he should have called it I Don't Need You) and Girl. But beyond that it's diminishing returns. Nowhere Man has said all it has to say (which ironically is nothing) 65 seconds in - including the solo. Sorry George, I already do think for myself (and, hey, I'm not the one copying The Byrds). And I know a lot of people really rate In My Life, but... sorry, I don't. My bottom three though are Run For Your Life, You Won't See Me, and What Goes On. Did I mention that it has a great cover? It has a great cover.

Each album by The Beatles is a musical evant. Rubber Soul occupies a special place in the band's work. It's the borderline between the band's early and late albums. I can't disagree with your rankings so far though I'd probably give "Help!" an A. My top 3: Norwegian Wood (sitar!), Nowhere Man and If I Needed Someone which is a Harrison classic. I do want to defend 'Run for Your Life' though, it's a great rocker and inspired by an Elvis song. Listening to The Lost Lennon Tapes one Sunday Elliot Mintz played a acetate or unused studio tape of the song where it was spliced after a minute or so and it hurt him, it was so rocking. I've never been fond of 'Michelle', they were stuck for a song to finish up the album so one of them suggested that French tune Paul used to play, that's how it got made. "These are words that go together well, my Michelle," is not a great lyric.

"Rubber Soul" is the album (the non US release) where everything was just perfect. The songwriting, the melodies, the performances, the experimentation - were all top notch. The only song that could be considered less than great was "What Goes On" - and even that song was better than what other bands were dishing up as album tracks. "Revolver" ticked all those boxes too - except for one - the melodies. There are periods on "Revolver" where the melodies slip into blandness & laziness - which was Unbeatles like. Just my opinion.

I can fully understand why North American fans prefer the Capitol release to the UK one. It's all about the memories and most North Americans tend to dislike 'Drive My Car' for that reason. Also, the inclusion of some 'HELP!' songs makes the album appear less revolutionary than it was in its UK incarnation. To those of us who grew up with the UK version it is generally seen as a bigger departure from the earlier albums than for those who grew up with the Capitol one. As a child I first heard these songs through The Beatles cartoon TV show. It is my favorite Beatles album. Cheers.

Great album, cover and good production. Girl is greek music I think, with bouzouki sounding guitars. I love that. The Word is very catchy, Wait sounds like alternative rock from the 80's. And the fact that some guitars sounds like The Birds is because The Beatles influenced them in the first place with their A Hard Day's Night and Beatles For Sale guitar sounds. So it's not The Beatles copying The Birds, it's the opposite.

It’s a truly great album, the beginning of The Beatles’ really creative phase. The only drawback for me, sadly, is You Won’t See Me, which drags - supposedly deliberately - apparently it’s due to the basic track being recorded on piano without Ringo laying down a tempo.

A combination of greatness and some annoyance, like that cheesy organ bit in "I'm Looking Through You" and the "Run For Your Life" lyrics that you mentioned. "Nowhere Man" could indeed be the best Beatles song, but as you say, these songs change with us as we grow, and comparative ranking is fun but not engraved in stone.

A few years ago i thought it was a great album, but reflecting on it now i think it's just a 'good' album that certainly doesn't hold a candle to its successor. The album imo consists of 3 or 4 great songs, 3 or 4 terrible songs, and the rest being of relatively standard quality. So overall not the most balanced record if you ask me, but the fact that it influenced Brian Wilson to make Pet Sounds arguably makes up for that :) Special kudos to George btw, as he certainly stepped up his game as a songwriter with this record

While it has a few songs I usually skip, Rubber Soul is one of my favorites. This is where they got their feet wet with more artistic and experimental styles of writing, before they made their psychedelic shift on the next 2 gems...

I prefer the US version. It 's more coherent than the English Rubber Soul and It's Only Love and I've Just Seen a Face are great songs. That can't be said of Drive My Car, What Goes On and If I Needed Someone. I only miss Nowhere Man. Nevertheless, bot albums are fantastic. My top 3: Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man and I'm Looking Through You,

You sang "What Goes On" in front of a class?! That's where your high quality entertainment career began, right? Cool! PS: If you were 7 years old, it must have been grade 2, grade 4 would be 9/10 ;).

Yeah, it was probably 1966 and was likely in Grade 4 and about 8 or 9 years old. Thanks!

An amazing album BUT I do think it’s probably the most overrated Beatles album. It ranks 7th overall for me. Great video!

I haven’t thought about it to much but when I think about songs off each of the albums my rankings would be 1:Abbey Road 2: White album 3: Revolver 4: Sgt pepper 5: Rubber soul 6: magical mystery tour 7: let it be 8: help 9: hard days night 10: Beatles for sale 11: please please me 12: with the Beatles I honestly love all the songs on each of the albums up to help. Then there are some songs on albums im not a fan of. The white album has the not so great songs but they have so many amazing ones. I’d like to know what your ranking are to see what you have above rubber should because it’s a great album. Just my opinion!
