Terrific song! Paul McCartney, who wrote and sang the song, says it's about racial injustice and how the Black girls he saw walking to school in the Central High Crisis were so brave that it inspired him to write the song. He said that in England, where he's from, guys call girls "birds" and he thought the metaphor of the Blackbird worked well to get his meaning across. He even met the now grown schoolgirls from Central High, a few years ago, and told them about them being his inspiration. Then again, The Beatles were all about fighting racism. They even refused to play any venues in the American South that refused to integrate their audience. And, they ended up being the most influential, best-selling musical act of ALL time. Pretty cool.

Yes, all true. Recently I saw a photo of McCartney with the two women who inspired this song. The Beatles insisted that their touring contracts state that they would not play any segregated venues, as you said. I was already a long-time Beatles fan, but this made me respect them all the more.

Yes, the Beatles refused to give in to the Democrat Party's sadistic segregated Jim Crow laws which they alone created and enforced in the south...what an evil political bunch of tyrants both then and now! anyone affiliated with these leftist pigs should be ashamed.

@@robertaccornero7172 thanks for injecting hate into this discussion. Not! When you spew cr@p, at least tell the whole story and not just half of it. It was the Southern Democrats AND Republicans who were the racists. They consistently voted against and blocked laws that would have protected the rights of Black people. It was the Northern politicians of both parties who passed voting and civil rights laws, and when this happened the racist Dixiecrats flipped the Democrat party the bird and became Republicans. And, Republicans were more than happy to welcome them in.

All of the lads were appalled at the racial climate in the States. They refused to play at segregated venues unless ALL people had equal access. After Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in April 1968 American cities erupted in riots and demonstrations. In England girls were commonly referred to as "birds". John Lennon also used this term in his song "Norwegian Wood" "...this bird had flown." The song is about repressed (sunken eyes) black women. As tragic as Kings death was, the Black community appeared to be uniting for their "struggle to be free." In short, it is a song of hope and encouragement to stay the course. Of course, after King there really was nobody to pick up the message and drive the point home, continue the journey and the message became diluted.

One of my personal favorites. I've been a fan for 29 years, and this rates in my top 5. One of the things I appreciated about The Beatles were their willingness to address current issues. This dropped in '68 when America was at its most torn, and the Civil Rights Movement was at the center of the storm. McCartney made a bold statement here, and it definitely remains relevant in 2022.

Here are some others to try (song & album): "Here Comes the Sun" - Abbey Road, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - The White Album. "Let It Be" - Let It Be, "All You Need Is Love" - Magical Mystery Tour, "Got to Get You Into My Life" - Revolver, "Norwegian Wood" "In My Life" - Rubber Soul. Singles - "Hey Jude" "Revolution" (singles combined on a album called Hey Jude) The Beatles had many phases and did a lot of musical experiments before others did. These songs will span some of that. They have such a large discography that they have a whole channel on Sirius XM radio. Regarding "Blackbird", I took the meaning literally when I was young but recently another reviewer did the whole White Album and a comment was made that the album was done when they were starting to go their separate ways. This is Paul's song and it is in a book of his poetry I have. I think he was saying it was ok to break away and that they all needed to do their own thing. The album Let It Be was their last. I was a major Beatles fan and had just turned 13 when it came out (1970) and I had no idea that the split had already occurred. But with such wonderful talent, there was bound to be different ways they would want to go. They were just boys following a music dream and they hit big so fast. They matured into their music and their spirituality and found new paths. And it was a great time for new things in society. The change started when they went to India where a lot of the White Album was written. I learned a lot from this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_(album)

Great reaction! You were very close on the meaning. The Beatles wrote over 230 songs in their short 7.5 year career of releasing music, and there are so many that have meaning (and some written NOT to have any meaning - purposefully, lol). Here are a few with meaning you may like: 'Let It Be' ['Let It Be' album 1970], 'She's Leaving Home' - a sad one ['Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' album 1967], 'In My Life' ['Rubber Soul' album 1965], 'Yesterday', the most covered song in history ['Help!' album/Single from 1965]. If you want to step up the pace there is 'Helter Skelter', 'Revolution', 'Birthday', 'Hey Bulldog', 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)'. Then you could go into their psychedelic period, etc. Its a very deep rabbit hole with a ton of very diverse and great music. Try the best you can to pick from the original albums. So many reactors are mistakenly choosing cover bands, demos, etc. Many thanks!

*@Jay & Amber* Paul McCartney wrote this about the civil rights struggle after reading about race riots in the US. He penned it in his kitchen in Scotland not long after an incident in Little Rock when the federal courts forced the racial desegregation of the Arkansas capital's school system. "I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar and I'd heard about the civil rights troubles that were happening in the '60s in Alabama, Mississippi, Little Rock in particular," he told GQ. "I just thought it would be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might give them a little bit of hope. With The Beatles, you never know what you're goin to get. If you put all their songs in a blender and pulled one out, you have no idea what you're in for - the 'old', mature Beatles were completely different from the very young when they first started - they grew up fast and so did their music. If you're interested enough, look up The White Album" this was a very unique and very transitory album. At this time is when they started to bud into individual artists in their own rights and felt the need to go their separate ways to do their own thing but still tried to hold it together. They did hold it together for a couple of more records and those records were phenomenal !

This album was released in 1968. And it's in many ways their 'American' album. Connect the dots and the meaning of the song becomes obvious.

A lot of people do not like Obladi obladah from the White Album but there is Paul's nod to the early reggae movement Its hero Desmond is a tribute to Drsmond Dekker who had just hit big with The Istealites Similarly with Blsckbird. Too long thought of as Jim Crow with repression Imposed on you ? well forget all that Now is your time to fly and hit those great heights . You are beautiful Blackbird

We always had our favorite Beatle. Little girls chose on which one they thought was the cutest. As we got older, we chose based on sound. I love all of them, all the music, but John is my heart. He is bluesy, slow..just what I love. "Stand By Me, Oh Darlin', Imagine!

You will find every Beatle song from 1966 and beyond will be very different. Pre 1966 will also be very good, but in 1966 everything changed as they became moe experimental.

Not many reaction videos do full albums, but the very best of The Beatles is what is known as the “Abbey Road montage” It’s side two of the vinyl album and it starts with ‘Because’ and ends with ‘Her Majesty’. (‘Here Comes the Sun’ is on that side as well but you did a reaction to it already) It’s probably some of the best music ever recorded IMO. Even if you don’t do a reaction video for it, it’s still worth a listen.

I'm not usually one for "covers", but.... The entire soundtrack of "across the universe" is GOLD! One of the few times I prefer a cover over the original, and it's jam packed with amazing songs

It's about segregation at one of their concerts which they refused to do because of that. So, the concert promoters stopped the segregation and the concert went on.

As I read through the comments, people have already covered all of it although well it was about the race riots and he related it to his personal experiences with racism in Liverpool. It was also a nod to Rosa Parks. He really gave a shit, he honestly did. Well I mean they all did but it was Paul who wrote and sang this. When I was a little kid and heard this about maybe five years after the song had come out. I just assumed it was about lifting yourself out of depression and getting on your feet and flying again which it totally works on that level. It was until I was much older that I understood that it was addressing racism. But no matter what, it's an absolutely beautiful song

the thing that I love about the Beatles is that they don't really have just one kind of sound.... their music changed and evolved over the years, so songs from their early years are very different than songs from their later albums. You should try out Strawberry Fields Forever and While my Guitar Gently Weeps.
