I'm thinking the digital generation are always looking for perfection when it didn't exist when these songs were made or listened to originally . To me the 90s Beatles releases were unmistakably Beatles and cleverly put together . It doesn't surprise me Jeff Lynne was involved and the video was nostalgic and nicely made . All three sound like a tribute rather than new songs which , of course , is exactly what they were .

Exactly. John never liked his voice, and was always trying to get George Martin to come up with different ways to distort it. I think he would have loved how he sounded here.

The car crash reference is Tara Browne the Guinness heir who was killed in a car crash on 18th December 66 in London aged 21. It was in the newspaper that John had read when composing "A Day In The Life" it's the subject of the first verse.

Personally, I like that distortion in the old recording of his voice on this song, Seems I've heard songs in the past where an artist intentionally sought to get that kind of distortion through effects for their own artistic reasons in the production. For example, Robert Plant's vocal on the song "No Quarter" from the Led Zeppelin album, "Houses of the Holy" has sort of that same distorted effect.. Yet, here it's achieved (accidentally) from just a poor quality cassette tape recording. I've gotten so used to it on this song that I kind of relate it to the mood of the song itself. If they were to go in and smooth it out, clean it up and get rid of the distorted sound in his voice it really wouldn't be the same song to me.

This song is fantastic. Such a pity John and George aren't with us anymore. They're all fantastic and deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame. I think you were referring to the hoax that Paul McCartney died in a car wreck in 1969

Paul only helped with some of the words in the bridge. John had already worked out the entire tune, as can be heard on his demo.

This is the 2015 Mix, it is allredy improved a little. With the newer technology, it can be made better, to separate Johns voice more, but at the same time, the bad quality of the tape give this track more character. Real Love is another thing, there is more room for improvement.

Paul and John were both in bad car accidents. John, to the point of giving up driving altogether.

Paul is the only Beatle who has never been in a car accident bad enough to require hospitalization. John in 1969. George in 1972 and Ringo in 1981.

I personally think that the "distortion" caused by the low quality recording is technically a bad thing, but i love that they made the song around them in a way itt is still beautiful, i dont think a high quality audio necessarily makes a better song, Feel Good inc. from gorillaz is a good example of this
