John and George continue their “Please Please Me” amplified Gibson J-160E guitar sound on “From Me To You”! Recorded on March 5, 1963, The Beatles also used their J-160Es this day on “Thank You Girl” and an early version of “One After 909”. The woody tone of these recordings leads me to believe George used his J-160E instead of the twangier Gretsch Duo Jet.
George opens “From Me To You” with his classic octave melody style. Pay special attention to the slurring of notes through slides. For example, the D octave at 0:01 is played with a slide up, while the D octave immediately after is played with a slide down. In live performances of “From Me To You”, George preferred to play the C major chord as a barre in the 3rd fret position. On the actual recording, however, he plays the C major as a barre at the 8th fret. This can be heard through the high C note (high E string, fret 8).
Likewise, in live performances, George plays many more embellishments, including a C7 before the middle eights and chromatic lead in notes throughout. The only such embellishment heard on the original is the chromatic walk up from C to D at 0:41 and 1:24.
George’s guitar is nearly inaudible for the Gm, C, and F chords of the middle eight. He does change his pattern from a “dada da” to a “dada dada” for this section, except at 1:19. In live performances, George would play these chords with more loose strumming higher up on the neck. The G major to Gaug section in the first middle eight (0:45) is played without the G major on beat 1, as opposed to the second middle eight (1:28). The final octave D at 1:50 is played very short to give George time to reach the final A minor barre chord.
Interestingly, the instrumental section at 1:03 features John on harmonica, Paul on bass, and George on guitar as an overdub (Take 9 - edit piece 1). All play the melody in unison. George’s guitar sounds much brighter and twangier here, leading me to believe that he used his Duo Jet for this section. This can be heard especially in the hammer-ons at 1:04. In live performances, he would play this melody in octaves, but the hammer-on sound of the recording makes it likely that he recorded “From Me To You” as a single line melody.
John keeps a relatively metronomic strumming pattern throughout “From Me To You”. In viewing the live performance at the Royal Variety Show 1963, one can see that the stereotype of John Lennon as a heavy handed player is not totally true. His hand is closed while playing, and much of the movement is generated in the wrist. The strumming during the middle eight is made even lighter (0:35, 1:17). However, it does get a little heavier during the G to Gaug sections! (0:45, 1:28).
An embellishment of a G7 is added at 0:12, 0:26, and 1:37. This embellishment is not included at 0:54 or 1:09. John concludes “From Me To You” (1:44) with a chord sequence of C, Am, G#aug, each time accenting the beginning of the chord.
As with most early recordings of John Lennon’s J-160E, the left channel features his Vox amplified sound while the right channel includes acoustic bleed of the booming J-160E into the vocal microphone. This sound was recreated in this video for authenticity.
Instruments Used:
John Lennon and George Harrison Guitars: Gibson J-160E Standard

Congratulations on reaching 30,000 subscribers mattiboo. Was so blessed to have found your channel. I've loved The Beatles for over 50 years now and thought I new a fair amount about them and their music. But since I found your channel, I've learned so much interesting detail about pieces I've listened to forever, gave me the chance to watch you play songs which to this day make me smile, oh, and along the way inspired me to suck it up and learn how to play the guitar. Can never thank you enough. Again, congratulations on 30,000 subs mattiboo. I'm very happy and proud to be one of them.

Excellent analysis of the song. I think this song, along with a few others to a lesser extent, really paved the way towards the definitive early Beatles sound most evident on the Hard Day's Night album. The bridge in particular is noteworthy with it's key change and it's use of an augmented chord.
@mattiboo
@mattiboo 5 жыл бұрын
Nice observation! The Please Please Me era of songs is best defined by the woody J-160E amplified tones, George's use of octave melodies, the Beatles' tight harmonies, and extreme panning of the vocals and instrumentation. The songs "Please Please Me", "From Me To You", and "Ask Me Why" are good examples of these techniques. The group made great use of technical advances for the A Hard Day's Night album, including a four track tape machine which allowed for greater control over the mix and ability for more overdubs. That era of their sound revolves around George's Rickenbacker 12 string, manually double tracked vocals, and a drier but fuller sounding mix.

I wouldn't consider it for myself, but the AC30S1 is an interesting concept. The modifications likely lower the notoriously heavy Vox weight, and the single 12 inch speaker may create a more AC15 sound. Hopefully I'll get to try one out!

@mattiboo
@mattiboo 5 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! I can only speculate, but he may have grown accustom to playing the 325 live through their many performances in Hamburg and the Cavern Club. A complimentary question is why he chose to play the J-160E more often in the studio, instead of the 325? He may have enjoyed the acoustic tone of the J-160E on records, but found that he couldn't hear that woody acoustic sound live, so he stuck with the trusty Ric 325.

I am confident John used his J-160E since acoustic bleed can be heard on the vocal channel microphone for the rhythm guitar. The woody guitar tone of George's lead makes me believe he used his Gibson as well, but I can never know for certain if he used his Gretsch instead. Photos from the "From Me To You" session show both John and George on the J-160Es though. i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2016/03/09/11/320519B200000578-3483404-George_Martin_with_the_Beatles_recording_From_Me_To_You_Studio_2-a-30_1457522754545.jpg

Hey I have a question, I own a j-160e and I’ve tried for so long to see how they get the acoustic sound with them I noticed that you are plugged in while playing the rhythm part and it’s not the magnetic p-90 sound it sounds like a mic how did The Beatles do this live and how do you do it?
@mattiboo
@mattiboo 3 жыл бұрын
The rhythm part is actually an inadvertent mix of both! As with most early recordings of John Lennon’s J-160E, the left channel features his Vox amplified sound while the right channel includes acoustic bleed of the booming J-160E into the vocal microphone. I recreated this by micing the amp directly and then having a "room" mic that picked up mostly the acoustic guitar sound.

The modern J-160Es sound very much acoustically like a Gibson J45. It definitely is a full bodied, rich and deep sound. Vintage J-160Es were constructed from less quality woods and are notorious for having a thin acoustic tone. The modern ones really don't sound like that at all. Overall, many would say the modern J-160E has a traditional dreadnought Gibson acoustic sound.

Both guitars are amplified through a Vox AC15C1 with the Gibson J-160E Standard's stock pickup, the P100 (the original was a P90). John's guitar was also recorded acoustically and blended with the amplified sound. On these early Beatle records, the amplified sound was panned totally left while the acoustic sound was on the vocal track, mixed all the way right.
