Lennon used to think it was funny how people had all kinds of theories about the meanings to Dylan's lyrics, so he wrote some things like "I Am The Walrus" just to stump people. He said in an interview that the "Glass Onion" line "the walrus was Paul" was just a joke to confuse people.
@robertjohnson49575 күн бұрын
It’s been pointed out before; but ‘I am the Walrus’ was written with busybody lyric interpreters in mind. College professors trying to claim this or that song was written in iambic pantameter, as a hat tip to Shakespeare. Or this lyric is referencing a war or hardship, or a painful historical reference etc. when they were just writing music. Not to say their music doesn’t go in these directions at times. But they were tired of words being put in or taken out of their mouth. So go ahead and tell everybody what ‘sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come’ means.

In Steven Tyler's autobiography he talks about him and a buddy running into John. John told them they got one question. They asked what he meant by the opening lyric to Happiness is a Warm Gun. He said it just sounded good coming out of his mouth. After reading that I stopped worrying so much about song meaning and just learned to groove.

"The walrus was Paul" is a reference to the cover of Magical Mystery Tour. Rumors were swirling in the non internet days that Paul was dead. Also checkout the "I buried Paul" stuff. Paul is dead wasn’t hatched until later but ‘clues’ go back to Sgt Pepper. Paul’s wearing the “Officially Pronounced Dead” arm patch which he said really meant Ontario Provincial Police” Not OPD. Hard to see if that a P or a D though. Hand over his head in the cover. The flower bass with only 3 strings. The words “He Die” on the badness drum. His back to the camera on the back cover photo. Tons of clues for anyone who cared to indulge. Cigarette in the right hand on Abbey Road. He was a lefty. I smoked a long time ago and always carried the cigarette in my left hand and I’m a righty. George dressed like a grave digger etc. “Paul is dead miss him” on Revolution #9. This is just my recollection as an 8-9 yr old in the 60’s, hearing about and looking for clues. Tons more supposed clues out there though. I find the page in the Magical Mystery Tour booklet much more eerie. John holding the kid with the ballon and his killers initials on the sign behind him. “The Best Way to Go is by M&D C ( can’t see the full word or name ) ..

So here's a clue for you all: John idealized this album as being an "anti pepper" which means turning away from the summer of love type of psychedelic music the band helped to shape and that's the meaning behind Glass Onion - he's referring to songs from this phase, distancing himself from that era. "The Walrus was Paul" as he said in a interview is a nod to Paul, the John way to say "thank you" for leading the band after the passing of their manager Brian Epstein (the magical mistery tour period) now after meditating in India the band could function normally... but they were not the same anymore. They grew up to be four individual talented musicians and this album is the result of that.

Ringo is back in the band and sounds like he put all his anger out on the drum kit he had during his quitting time :D It is one of the best produced tracks on the album imo. Lennon's sarcastic lyrics towards people overinterpreting their songs always stands in the foreground here but I think the music is cogenial. The Walrus was Paul in the relative costume in the MMT movie. Fun Fact: Lennon proposed the song name as the band name of some friends. But they were choosing another one later: Badfiinger.

"Here's another clue for you all, the walrus was Paul" was a jab at people who thought Paul was dead. It was a rumor circulating at the time and some people still believe it. In the Magical Mystery Tour movie, there's a scene where they play I Am The Walrus and they're all wearing different costumes which cover their faces; but it's obvious from the instruments they're playing that John was actually the walrus. John was also on vocals and he said: "I am the walrus." Doesn't get any clearer than that.

That line was from the "Paul is dead" rumours and gossip around that time, many clues the Beatles slyly left to say Paul was dead, just as a goof but people started to really believe it. At the time, rumours were flying around - Paul died and was replaced, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was about LSD etc. John decided to have fun with it, all the distorted interpretations of things that meant something else to them, and gave all the conspiracy theorists of the day some mindfucks of his own, for instance: the walrus was Paul! Now what does that mean ? Nothing, but it is great material for a killer song. If you look at everything through a glass onion, everything ends up being distorted.
