You should check out a documentary called "It Might Get Loud". It looks at Jimmy Page, The Edge from U2 and Jack White, and their influences, approaches to music and playing etc in separate pieces, then brings them together for a jam session of sorts and talking about it all together. One contrast was the differing approaches between Jack White and the other two, particularly Edge. The piece on White opened wih him building a guitar using a slab of wood as the body, a Coke bottle as the bridge, one thick piece of wire as the string, all held together with nails and powered by a 9 volt battery. Then he played it and said "Who says you need a lot of money to get a guitar?" He's all about stripped down to basics and generally not much between the guitar and the amp but a cord. No gadgets to change the sound. Edge, on the other hand, is all-in on the technology and wants to use it all. Not saying one is better or worse, just sayin'

He took me to lunch that day, because he wanted me to hear some of the cd on the ride to and from the restaurant. The music blew me away and I became an instant fan. Fire song. Fire reaction! I want to support the recommendations of others in your comments that are saying watch "It Might Get Loud". It is so interesting and watching and listening to the guitar work is crazy. As for this song, I once heard Jack White say that when he was a kid he asked his mom who the people were ringing the bells outside the stores asking for spare change. He says he named this song because he thought he heard her say that they are the "Seven Nation Army" instead of "Salvation Army". Hella funny. I feel like I also heard the he is VERY particular about sound and that for the album version he played drums maybe because if I recall Meg didn't really play the drums initially. He sort of taught her how to play well enough for live work. I could be wrong, but that memory bounces around in my head.

I became a Jack White fan about 8 years ago. He is an amazing artist on an eclectic journey. I had to make a trip to Detroit so I decided to stop by the home he grew up in at 1203 Ferdinand St. just so I could see it. I was standing outside his old house taking photo's and a man opened the door and I was expecting some sort of grief but instead he said you must be a Jack White fan. I said yes I am. He said this place is pretty cool, you want to come in and take a look? I said absolutely. he said his Uncle had bought the house from Jacks Brother and was renovating it and turning it into a neighborhood Ministry. He said don't mind the mess as we walked in. It was your typical 2 story Colonial with an attic and basement though I only checked out the ground floor. There were acoustic tiles on all the ceilings and I think some of the walls also had them as well. The walls of the stairwell going upstairs were also covered with the same tiles. He told me that it was his understanding that Jack had done a fair amount of recording of his early works there. He also told me that the neighbors told him that they called the cops regularly to complain about the volume during rehearsals, jamming, recording , etc. I got some interior photos as well during the visit. After I left I immediately went to Jack's record store called Third Man Records in what's called the "Case Corridor" near Downtown Detroit and bought some collector edition vinyls while I was there. Very cool place. There is also a vinyl record pressing plant there that Jack built. He also has another Third Man Records store in Nashville which I have also visited and bought some limited edition vinyl. If you're ever in Detroit or Nashville make sure to check it out. If you want some suggestions check out "Fell in Love With a Girl" performance on David Letterman. Or "Love Interruption" he recorded as a side project with several female musicians. Or a very unique song he recorded with one of his other bands called the Raconteurs. The song is called "Carolina Drama". Jack calls it a murder ballad. It starts out slow and rocks out midway through. You talk about a hard song, it's very hard lyrically. I won't spoil it for you but it involves a woman with two children, an ex con boyfriend, a Preacher, and a Milkman.
