I'm an old Aussie bloke, sitting in my recliner and LOVED watching you get hooked by this sweet, jazzy little homage to the 1920's ("Silver screen/ Hollywood song" etc) which I first heard back in, oh, probably December '68. EVERY time they released an album/single, I heard something I'd never heard before. Musically, The Beatles could do ANYthing; emulate any style and created a few of their own. Modern music owes its many variations and nuances to The Beatles, after whom there are galaxies of unreachable space, then everybody else. You said: "Oh, I can't get enough!" and you're awake to their endless, singular, splendid, mind-bending diversity. Me, too! 🤩😍😎. Their divine inventions are the sound track of my life. The last thing I ever want to hear are The Beatles.

This is just one of the many reasons that the Beatles were so special. They were probably the most musically diverse group ever, and this homage to the 1920's jazz era is a prime example.

Though John Lennon never missed the opportunity to denigrate Paul's "Granny music". He was all in on Honey Pie (recorded the 1st week of October 1968) Supplying the rhythm guitar on the basic track AND overdubbing the jazzy guitar solo the next day. George plays a Fender 6 string bass. The intro line "Now she's hit the big time" was fed through a compressor with the treble and bass turned down to zero. Giving the vocal a 1920's radio vibe. Throw in the scratchy record overlay and you have a Beatles homage to the early 20th century Music Hall/Vaudeville styles the band grew up listening to.. George Martins arrangement of 5 saxophones and 2 clarinets seals the deal. JAYY, you may've been a Flapper dancer in an earlier life (Look it up) 😀 Fantastic reaction young lady, RNB

Yes, John was constantly putting down many (most?) of the the Beatles recordings, buuuuut, in the studio he was fully committed, delivering the magic again and again. The phrase "thou doth protest too much!" comes to mind.

Paul McCartney has always had a knack for writing songs like this that have an “old timey” feel with a delicious melody that is just catchy as hell. Please check out “When I’m Sixty-Four”. I guarantee you will love it. Thanks for appreciating the Beatles for ALL of their music, not just the megahits. I just love your enthusiasm Jay. Keep up the great work 🌺✌️

I've always liked this tune, with its nice "Roaring 20s" vibe. It's interesting that you mentioned Tiny Tim; there is a 1968 radio show recording where John and Paul praise the music of Tiny Tim! Without any hint of sarcasm!

Paul's dad was in a big band type brass section and played trumpet (Paul started on trumpet, but traded in on a guitar because "You can't sing while you play trumpet". Also, his dad would, at family gatherings, play piano whilst older ladies would sing old 1920s and 1930s songs in the "parlor". Paul's exposure to many styles, mixed with John, George's and Ringo's styles, allowed the Beatles to release more the 250 songs without having 2 that sound the same.

I've always loved the hint of vibrato Paul throws into his voice. It was very popular in the 1920s and '30's songs he's throwing back to. The last big vibrato singer Anthony Newly who sang into the 70s. He was in a couple movie/Broadway musicals if I remember right. If you like it he was good at it, not my style, but he seemed to be good fellow. He was British and had a great sense of humor. It's been so long since I've seen him I'm gonna see if he's on KZbin.💋💖😎🧓

Paul wrote this song as an ode to his father who loved the old 1920s - 1930s big band style music. I myself love a lot of that music from the 1930 and 40s. You should react to, "Jo Stafford and the Pied Pipers - "It Started All Over Again" (Jo Stafford had one of the best voices of all time. It's believed she had "perfect pitch She sang with the Tommy Dorsey Band.) Check out, "Connie Haines & Van Johnson - 'Let's Choo Choo Choo To Idaho' - from 'The Duchess of Idaho' (1950) Also, "Connie Haines - "Teasin'". (Connie Haines also sang with the Tommy Dorsey Band along with Frank Sinatra.) It's great that you like a variety of music

The diversity of the Beatles is astounding remember this is a song from the same album that has helter skelter, yer blues and revolution no 9 . There was never a band that was able to sound differently so often sometimes on the same album .

George Martin, producer, cemented the aithentic sound Paul wanted on this song with his old fashioned style arrnagement of the clairnets and saxes complete with vibrato style of the 1920's and 30's. Try Duke Ellington, one of the very best compsoers of the old era. He kicked butt.
