@@vitoberio3637 John Lennon's original handwritten lyrics for In My Life (which are on display in the British Museum alongside and on equal footing with the Magna Carta, the Gutenberg Bible and an original copy of Shakespeare's First Folio) contained several more verses and had specific references to real people and places. I believe Paul spearheaded both the editing down of the song and the guardrails of the universal themes in the lyrics.
@reddoxx475412 күн бұрын
@@marcionery83 The song doesn't really have a "middle eight", though, and it doesn't have a verse/chorus format. It has the melody of the first section, which then changes to the melody in the second section. It then goes back to the first melody, and then repeats the second melody. McCartney wrote the harmony. George Martin filled in the middle of the song with his sped-up piano solo.

The lyrics to this song sound like they were written from the perspective of an 80-year-old man. John wrote them when he was just 25. He was an old soul. Maybe part of him knew he was not long for this world, especially after the death of Stu Sutcliffe.

Beatles fan since the beginning. I can never choose a favorite Beatles song. It's impossible, but I can name my top 5 and this is one of them. John sings lead, but if you listen closely and you know their voices Paul is singing parts of the verses with him. You can tell the parts where it's John alone. That's how good they were. Two voices in such tight harmony that they sound like one. Such a beautiful melody and touching lyrics. I've always wanted to have this play at my memorial.

This was one of the first lyrically "deeper" rock songa that I heard, as a child (born in '73, so I didn't hear it until the very early '80s), which really moved me, and showed me that rock could be about much more than rocking out, or dancing and having fun. It's *great* to rock out, and dance and have fun, but this song took me to a deeper place. The Beatles still do that for me, today, so many years later. Still a big fan!

It is played at funerals all the time. I picked it as my musical selection for the slideshow we did for my Dad's memorial and it slayed people as expected. But...this is a love song. It really isn't sad at all. It's about the joy of being so in love that even his fondest and saddest memories pale in comparison to what he's feeling right now.

A bona fide Classic. Back in 65 the rule for radio was nothing over 3 minutes. 2 to 3 minutes was what radio stations wanted. Not until The Beatles released "Hey Jude" in 1968 which clocked in at over 7 minutes was that ever thought of on the radio. Another Beatles first breaking the rules. I think it was George Martin who voiced his concern that it was too long and wouldn't get airplay. In true wise ass Lennon style he responded with "They'll play because it's The Beatles" and he was right. #1 hit around the world and their biggest hit in the US. Held the #1 spot for 9 weeks and another 19 weeks on the Billboard chart's. That was a record back then. They performed "Hey Jude" live on the David Frost show in 1968. Now there's a video you two need to react to, it's great. "Revolution" was the B-side and there's also a great live video in the studio for that one also. Lennon's guitar on the intro will blow your socks off. These were not on any Lp except on the White Album there's a slowed down acoustic version of "Revolution" which is very nice. Listen to both. Peace ❤❤

Guys, 3 verses is not really the norm although it happens a lot in newer songs and rock etc where a common structure isn't always followed. But with most radio-length and pop or even country songs in general, There's usually 2 verses and a "bridge" which is another segment of lyrics (sort f like a 3rd verse) but with a change in the music and melody to break the pattern of the other 2 main verses. Then of course, you have the choruses in between all the verses. So, it's generally a musical intro, verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, instrumental solo break, bridge, and the final chorus, outro, end of song Also, the choruses usually contain the "hook" of the song. The part that catches the ear both musically and lyrically and people usually walk away singing or humming it in their heads. That's structure has always kind of generally been the formula for the so-called "popular song" or single.

A little personal context: Rubber Soul was the third album I owned. At the time there were three and a half tv stations, and one radio station KWSY (kissin radio) available. The Rolling Stones (my brother did make me listen to Bob Dylan before this and I thought he sang like a sick cat um Rolling Stone song reference), The Who, Led Zep, and so frigging amazing groups came out at that explosive time in my life. I missed Bowie and Fleetwood Mac cuz I was on the western part of the continent where The Eagles dominated. You have access to so much. I'm kind of glad my universe was smaller, and I had time to listen to Simon and Garfunkle's songs over and over again in mono. And before autocorrect. Oh, and the thing about song length. As late as 1982. bands were working their songs to be cut to three minutes and twenty-two seconds. That fed the commercial turn-around.

That instrumental solo that sounds like a harpsichord was actually a piano played by George Martin slowly, then the tape sped up to meet the tempo and key of the song, and giving it the sound of a harpsichord. Brilliant work before digital tricks and synthesizers were invented.
