I bought this album in December 1984 and have always had a fondness for it. I was surprised it took so long for it to be reissued on CD. I wish they had released it on its own rather than as a tie in with the Ron Howard film. Although I do like the clarity I do feel the sound lacks some of the warmth. I do have recordings of both Hollywood Bowl shows from 1964 and 1965 without the reverb and I actually prefer those. There are some pretty good sounding boots from this period including the Philadelphia 1964 show, the Atlanta and Sam Houston shows as well as the Tokyo shows from 1966. I would love for Apple to release a boxed set of the concerts from 1964-1966. Thanks for posting!

Another well presented video Mike. While it's great to have any new Beatles release I can never understand why they made such a fuss of 'Hollywood Bowl'. Okay it's an iconic venue with the Beatles live at the height of Beatlemania but for me the Beatles live at Washington Coliseum is far superior. What a great package they could make of the iTunes freebie film of the concert on Blu Ray, a CD release, Beatles First US Visit and there's even a splendid unofficial colourised version of the gig available on bootleg. Anyway, as you say, I digress.😀 Cheers

Great comment. It is baffling some of the choices that have been made over the years. I suppose, overall, the live recordings just can't hold a candle to some of The Beatles peers. One of the few LP s that I did not buy as a LP, but as a cassette. Now I think as just an afterthought, I should have bought a LP copy, just to have. There is nothing like hold a real LP in your hand, if only for the artwork. Some years ago I found copies of ALL 3 Hollywood Bowl Concerts, online of course, and as a part of historical note, the Aug.29, 1965 concert was really bad, the the sound system was not working properly, the vocals and instruments are missing or cut out, and you can tell that the boys were upset, but carried on. I would like to have been a fly on the wall after that one. I think that is the reason that none of this concert was ever used. One other note, I think I remember, hearing in an interview, that back in the early 70's, John and come across a bootleg copy of these concerts, and because of this began to put pressure on all of the parties concerned to issue an official release. I guess thinking that if copies were out there, they might as well get paid for it, no matter the quality. If that is true a big Thank You, John. It is nice to note that these concerts are good to listen to, just to hear what it was like as well as for a historical reference,too. I would have like them to put out maybe a larger extended version made of all three concerts. After one of the concerts the audience began chanting " WE WANT THE BEATLES", over and over, I guess, maybe wanting a on cor, but no such luck. I was never able experience them live, but I still think that these concerts are a great experience any way. No matter the quality of the recordings, I am grateful to have heard them in any event, as any Beatles fan would be. Thank you for this post. Best wishes. Keep safe in these strange times. singles? Two are already gone

A few bits 'n' bobs: - In the summer of 1969, EMI received from Capitol Records the master three-track assembly of the 1964-08-23 Hollywood Bowl concert and it was logged into their archive as E94024. Sometime between 1969 and 1971, it is believed that this particular tape was "walked out" of EMI by an unknown third party and would later be the source of many early nineteen seventies unofficial releases of the Hollywood Bowl material. Interestingly back in 1964, the three-track assembly was even assigned a project number of 4877, indicating that despite The Beatles' reservations Capitol Records was still enthusiastic about a potential release. - You hit the nail on the head in regards to The Beatles more often than not needing to be motivated by outside factors in order to get product to market. The Beatles spent much of 1976 in court, trying to block Lingasong from releasing "Live At The Star Club" to market. They were ultimately unsuccessful due large in part to the fact that the tapes had actually been offered to both Brian Epstein, George Harrison and Ringo Starr on separate occasions and all parties refused to purchase them allowing the owners of the tapes to seek out other buyers. - Although "Live At The Hollywood Bowl" did eventually make it's debut on compact disc in September of 2016, it was briefly considered to be included as part of the 1987 compact disc campaign, although it was believed to be ultimately excluded on the request of George Harrison who did not favor it's release.

I agree the new version has better sound, esp. in the bass and upper frequencies. But again, I'm mystified that Capitol passed up on releasing the full concerts. I never liked the original album for splicing two shows a year apart and making it sound like one concert. _My_ bootleg CD has both shows in their entirety, so I know it can be done (and on a single disc, too). Generally the entire Hollywood Bowl concert(s) (in whatever version) is something you have for historical reasons, but never play. No surprise the band was never fond of any of it. BTW, you failed to mention that the original vinyl pressings had the tickets embossed on the front cover. A nice little touch on Capitol/EMI's part.
@MagicalMysteryMike4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the concerts were only about 30 minutes, so even if they did a little editing, all 3 could probably fit on one CD. Good catch about the embossed tickets. Considered putting that in, but the video was already getting a little long, so I had to do some editing of my own.
@mcarp5554 жыл бұрын
@@MagicalMysteryMike No worries. We've now immortalized that factoid about the embossing.
@barryk17014 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with you about the splicing of the concerts together. I have a 2 CD set with all 3 concerts and some interviews from the Hollywood Bowl show with the Beatles that I prefer over the original release. With the microphone going out in one of the concerts, I can see why Capitol wouldn't want to release that as part of the CD package. In general most of the Beatles concerts suffered from bad sound quality and there is only so much you can do to correct it with out losing some of the feel of original atmosphere. The 1963 concerts aren't that bad but by the time you get to the 1966 concerts, some of them are painful to listen to, even the Beatles themselves admitted to that in interviews.

The Capitol Records did Not have a record plant in Canada in the 1960's and so RCA pressed the Beatles singles and albums until 1973. I’m getting pretty tired of perfectionists bashing the Hollywood Bowl album. It was a certain era, the technology could only do so much, things weren’t perfect. It’s like bashing Elvis and Chuck Berry records for the echo.

I don’t think it’s bashing (well there’s some bashing). Moreover, I think there is just a frustration about not having better quality live recordings. Alas, like you said, it was a certain era and the tech was only so good.
Just thought it was a cool pic and it fit the bill for what I needed at that particular moment in the video.

Magical Mystery Mike Oh I thought maybe you thought he was someone he wasn’t.

@@piggyroo100 No, I definitely knew it was ol' Jack. Great photo of him. Random, I know, but I went with it.

I don't like the 2016 edition at all. The sound is too clean and the cover sucks.

Let's face it, the sound was not too good to begin with. Technology just wasn't where it needed to be. As far as the cover, this reissue of the Hollywood Bowl album was paired with the Ron Howard film Eight Days A Week, so it shared the design. Fortunately, the original is still out there. Unfortunately, it's only been released on CD in the 2016 edition.
