This song was the theme song for their TV film _Magical Mystery Tour,_ which had well-regarded musical segments, but is otherwise heavily criticized. They wore the animal costumes for part of the segment for the song "I Am the Walrus". You already reacted to that song, but the only visual you had was, like here, the album cover, but the song does properly have a "video" segment, which is wild!

I disagree it is exactly what I would expect from the Beatles...they changed music all within a few short years,once in a lifetime band the likes the world will never see again.

Those were the days when a new Beatles album meant Beatlemaniacs the world over were going to hear something entirely different from what came before. Whatever they did was entirely original and great. The outfits were for promotional purposes only, for album covers as you suggested. Today, there are tons of Beatle tribute bands, and when they perform, they wear the psychedelic outfits from this period. I hope you check out one of the tribute bands someday, Jayy, I think you'd have a great time.

The costumes are from their made for tv movie titled Magical Mystery Tour. They did use the costumes for the I Am The Walrus segment of the movie, but that was the only time they used them. Great song, great movie, even tho the critics panned it. True Beatle fans loved it.

The Beatles' last live concert took place on August 29, 1966, at Candlestick Park. Their music got too complicated to play live. In addition, the sound equipment then was getting drowned out by screaming fans.

I loves them, but August 18, 1966 they played at the Suffolks Downs racetrack just north of Boston and I didn't bother to go, even though it was just 6 miles from my house. In every TV news clip I saw of their concerts over the previous two years it was nearly impossible to hear them over the screaming. I knew I would find that extremely frustrating. Too bad, because one of the opening acts was The Ronettes, who I also really liked.

You should watch the 1967 BBC movie that this is from. It’s a trip, literally. It shows you what audiences at that time wanted to see. It has the same name. It makes next to no sense, but that intentional. It’s an experience. Very experimental.

The tragedy is that it was filmed in color, so they went out of their way to make it colorful. Then BBc broadcast it in Black and White.

@@loosilu Yes, at the time the BBC were stuffy idiots. I saw this film years later in a theater with pristine, crystal clear wide 35mm widescreen copy in color. the way it was meant to be seen. Yes there are weak spots in it because the Beatles thought they could produce it themselves, relying on the inexperienced Paul to basically produce it and storyboard it on the fly... Later he and John and perhaps George, kept changing the edits to their personal liking rather then having a director. It turned out a mess continuity and story wise but a great collection of music videos. Should have had Richard Lester help them. They also should have included the Hello Goodbye video in it instead of the stupid strip show and dooodah dog band song.

They were a very big influence on other bands and musicians just think this is back in like the sixties late sixties they didn't have to technology like they have now but look what they did with what they did have amazing

The MMT album has some of my favorite Beatles songs on it, including Strawberry Fields Forever which was the first song recorded for the Seargent Pepper album but left off, along with Penny Lane, because they were used as a double A-side single. A decision producer George Martin (the REAL 5th Beatle) later voiced regret about.

This was on a 6 track double EP here in the U.K. and was the soundtrack to their TV movie shown over Christmas 1967. Another innovation from the Beatles it came in a double sleeve with a booklet including photos. I still have the two discs but the sleeve disappeared years ago ! Another amazing you’ve made ❤

Since you weren't around in the 60s, it's hard to really get the feel of this music. Not in the same way as those who went through those times. But you enjoyed it, and that's what the aim was! You were right when you said 'trippy'. In the late 60s, drugs were a big thing, like weed and mushrooms. Acid, too. That connected people to the music and times.

YES! in the "a am the walrus" segment of the movie the beatles appeared in those costumes. the sound you heard when you said "what in the world?" was that of the magical mystery tour bus driving by. the bus played prominantly in the film. this is one of the beatles' strangest songs. its so... un-rock yet totally upbeat. and the horns give it kind of a ''spanish" flavor. never heard anything quite like it. i don't quite know how to catagorize it except as, yet, another beatles song i really like! just another unique example of how the beatles enjoyably expressed themselves without following the rules.

The songs on the “Magical Mystery Tour” album were basically leftover recordings from the “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. The Beatles made a TV movie on BBC to promote the album. The TV film was not shown in the United States until the late-1980s on the USA Network’s “Night Flight” program. Yes, the costumes on the album cover were worn for the promotional film clip for “I Am The Walrus”, which is seen in the TV film. This album must have been a hard one for Capitol Records to promote in the US, especially in the aftermath of “Sergeant Pepper “ album released earlier in the year (1967), of a soundtrack to a TV film no one in America at the time was going to see for many years.

You can also listning to the Beatles parodie band The Rutles. They where doing a copy of the song Im the Walrus. Its called Piggy in the middle. See also the parodie film All you need is cash from 1978. Its about The Rutles who actually are The Beatles. Monty Python actor and George Harrison involved in the film.

It was in their psychedelic period, the album and TV special that was the follow up to their 'Sgt.Pepper' album. It wasn't not so much a new album but an EP (extended player) of songs to accompany the TV special. The filming project was not well conceived or received, it's considered a misstep and their first artistic failure. However most of the music was just as creative and experimental as ever, and the proceeding single releases were massive hits as usual. The EP release only had six songs on it, but it was also extended as an album too, with the addition of five more tracks made up of the A and B sides of the smash hit singles. The image you showed was the full album compilation, and you may recognise other songs listed on the cover that you have already reacted to. You would be even more confused if you watched the accompanying film sequences for 'I am the walrus' , where the band did indeed wear these animal costumes for the location scenes. By this period the band had already stopped any touring the year before, and were now a studio band, they never performed in front of an audience with these costumes on.

To answer your question, by the time this album came out the Beatles were no longer touring. They certainly wore those outfits for photos and in a film that went with the album. There was a lot of experimenting with substances and different techniques and random sounds. John always pushed the barriers and bent the rules. It allowed for great creativity and a very healthy competition between the four guys. This resulted in some amazing songs and recordings. 🌺✌️

Yyes girl they dressed up and played in these costumes and played in those costumes yeah that rumbl8ng sound was the bus going by what i lovedwas the time changes for about 2&1/2 seconds they changed to a differenrt tempo then they slowed it down and then they rocked the beat then they added an odd meter to the the part near the latter section then the bass and ringo and the piano do a vamp and the vocals and even the piano at the end has phase shifting and of course not a bad song on that whole album allrighty L.A. girl you know for I have no idea how long your fave Beatle Ringo has lived up the hill from you in Hollywood .......that legendary drummer is the only Beatle I actually saw in person .....well sort of he was on the 405 and I was in the back of the station wagon I was taking a nap and luckily I happened to look up and Lo And Behold there was Ringo driving a 280 SL two seater cream colored Mercedes yeah there I was pointing at Ringo and telling Harry my Stepdad "HARRY LOOK IT'S RINGO STARR FROM THE BEATLES !!! and Harry looked over and of course Ringo noticed me staring at him and he looked at me all suprised like oh noI've been found out he did a double take turning his head to look at me twice in mocking astonishment of course I laughed and gave him a big smile he drove off and I noticed his California Liscsence plate was personalized and of course it said STARR

that was v bus rushing past, vis 4 me ves few yrs were ver best were creativity n new sounds were v 4, after ver introspective n folky ruber sole mid 60s era which took v bugs 2 a higher level n ven vey wnt even higher wit v following albums, domintated western muisic n pop culture n became leaders were v many tried 2 follow. prob never b repeated?, n all ina short 7 yrs- its hard to beleive.

Welp. You’re not far off. Magical Mystery Tour was done under the influence (at times) during recording. George Martin sorta pulled back during this period. I think it was too chaotic for him. This was also the time of Maharishi and Brian Epstein’s suicide. It was a sh*t show, in other words. Still… I think some interesting sonic pieces came out of this. Search YT here for “Flying Extended Version” for another take on that track. Yah… they might have made some trippy choices. The movie thing was a disaster. 😂🤪

v bugs had stoped turing by vis stage- vey were to big!, focused on studio wrk n songwriting, paul felt vey werent as close as whn vey were touring n got a bit 2 far frm ver ear;ier days n wanted to tour again, john n george didint, vis was kinda half way compromise so do a tour album. didint realy wrk but sme gd songs came about.
