Ringo's drumming is flawless on this one, and really drives the song.
@johnthiele787Ай бұрын
There appears to be some debate on this. I’ve read in several sources that Paul was playing drums and piano, and George doubled his guitar part on bass. In any case, it is certainly one of their most energetic songs!
@magneto793025 күн бұрын
@@johnthiele787I believe it's Ringo. There are a few parts where the hi-hat slightly opens up just before a snare roll. That would be typical of Ringo or any drummer, not Paul.

Sounds like Paul on drums
@Daberney24 күн бұрын
@neildyer4433 No, it sounds like Ringo. If you want to hear Paul play a shuffle, listen to Helen Wheels: much more basic than the drumming in OBS, and not nearly as solid and driving.
@magneto793022 күн бұрын
@neildyer4433 There is no Paul drum sound, so how can it sound like him? If you listen to Paul's drumming on The Ballad of John and Yoko, it's nothing more than a kick and a snare, just a simple beat all the way through it without any fills. The same with Back in the USSR, great song, lousy drums. Ringo would have been rolling all over the toms on those two songs. This song sounds like Ringo on drums. There's no one else to compare it to.

@narreddarr809210 жыл бұрын
eh? he wrote the first song on the 'Revolver' album. first track on side 1 on a Beatles' album? "the taxman"? 'Revolver' was the first REAL album by them where they actually wrote music from the soul and not to suit a trend [umm.. or maybe 'Rubber Soul'? nahhh... 'Revolver' was like 'Sgt Pepper' - psychadelia, psychOdelia? no, sounds too 'que'st que c'est'?]. 'Revolver' was the first album that showed the world they were more than just a boy band writing nice & safe songs to make mums and dads happy that their daughter wasn't listening to nasty sexy rock'n'roll. er... it was Harrison's song..?i think? Pretty sure. he wrote a lotta stuff with John. and Paul. but i think he worked better with John cos John was always after that 'edgy' rock kinda sound. i know Helter Skelter was primarily Paul's song and it's one of my fav but overall i think John and George pumped out better rock songs. Paul could write some beauties, 'Why don't we do it in the Road?', 'Back in the USSR' but, wtf? they were all strong songwriters, whatever they did.

This extraordinary song was written in January 1969, about three years after married to Pattie Boyd [in 1966] and about eight years before their divorce in 1977. Music critic Tim Riley says the lyrics represent "a witty and oblique look at love, delivered with sardonic flair", as typified by the opening verse: "I want a love that's right / Right is only half of what's wrong / I want a short-haired girl / Who sometimes wears it twice as long". He views the reference to "wearing rings on every finger" as a nod to Ringo Starr. The song's title is referred to only as an item that the singer declares he is "stepping out" of. According to music journalist Graham Reid, "Old Brown Shoe" reflects Harrison's growing confidence as a songwriter. He interprets the message as the guitarist "straining against the constraints of the Beatles ('the zoo'?)" during a period when, as the lyrics state, he himself was "changing faster than the weather". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Brown_Shoe

when did all these little clips of the Beatles REALLY come out? i mean, they've been around for bloody years. how come they weren't shown on the South Bank show or some other 'culture' doc in the 1990s or maybe earlier? there have been Beatles' fans in the millions since they split up. i was a big fan of Rubber Soul thru to Let It Be [an apt title for a band that was obviously over but somehow someone or something was patching them together like an old rubber dinghy that's obv gonna sink but nobody's got the nerve to simply abandon it... "look - it's just no fun anymore? can we just leave it to sink & go home?"]. Pretty sure John Lennon was mighty pissed at Paul because John & George had met with Paul and said, "it's obviously over so when do we just say it and get this over with? it's not as if life will change that much for any of us.. we'll still jam like we do now, once every so often, right? so let's just get the press conference over with". But Paul had asked them to hold off until the right moment came along. Then a few months later Paul 'declared' the Beatles were splitting without consulting John, George or Ringo. John was furious and even wrote a song dedicated just to Paul titled, "How do you Sleep?" [which is one of John's best songs]... especially lyrically, which he later apologised for [i smell Yoko at work there]. wow. i sound like a mad Beatle fan. i mixed their later albums with Nirvana, AiC, Soundgarden, PJ, G'n'R, Jimi Hendrix, STP, LZ years ago. it just felt like a nice mix. then there was the 70's Hawkwind & Pink Floyd phase with LOTS and LOTS of weed. then the good shit - QotSA, TCV, Foos, etc where the hell am i going w this? lay off the weed.

Absolutely. George was heavily influenced by Dylan/The band ethic at this time. He admits to robbing the chord sequence for Long Long Long from a Dylan track. The slide motif in this track mimics Highway 61 and the groove is exactly the same. George was never shy about stealing which is something all writers do anyway
