It would seem that those here at this part of the comment board have honestly nailed the point. The "it" factor....lacking in more ways than one. Yes, a severe lack of mojo.
@leonid44682 жыл бұрын
Look, I think one thing is being drastically overlooked here and that is context. I agree, it's great to see a lifelong fan of music still playing. No need to throw shade at someone who is playing for fun, because the more of us the better (especially drummers, because we tend to get made fun of a LOT...."how do you know a drummer is at your door? The knocking speeds up.") But as far as context goes, this is a man who still says he has no idea why he was kicked out of a band, and continues to maintain that his skill was above par, doesn't know what everyone is thinking when they say he couldn't hack it, and flat out says he was an amazing musician and the right one for the job. Now we get to this "performance". Sure it's a sound check, but this guy who portrays himself as a badass ready for everything that came next for the Beatles? Personally, I've been playing drums for over 25 years (but I've been a musician since age three, violin, then trumpet, then guitar a year after picking up the drums, then voice in college), and while all that alone means nothing (because anyone can just say stuff, and time is no measure of greatness), having played in many different bands, hosting open mics, and basically jamming in random sessions at every opportunity on many different instruments (with varying degrees of success...yes I don't mind admitting I can suck sometimes), I've seen my share of drummers. And while I'd give him props for still having the cajones to get up on stage, let's be honest: his comments and assertions on his abilities in no way whatsoever match what we actually are seeing here. He is doing lots of stuff someone with a bit of natural ability that picked up the instrument six months ago would be doing before learning what actually constitutes a solid fill. His timing ranges from sketchy to all-over-the-place. He uses cymbals as a safety valve (that double strike on the same cymbal after a fill is like a pacifier to a drummer who just got lost...we've all done it, it's just not a feature of our playing). He just seems to have a habit of playing that looks almost identical to someone who doesn't know what they're doing yet. A lack of seasoning. All this would seem to indicate that perhaps what he says and what he can actually perform don't quite match. Which one must conclude perhaps more ear, less mouth is necessary. Does he have an ear for it? Obviously to some degree, as he can put together a few good bars of music, and a couple of points, it did sound pretty good. Is it where it needs to be? Let's just say, if he auditioned for me, he wouldn't be my first choice. Am I saying he shouldn't play? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Just maybe don't talk as much, and play more...a LOT more. But therein lies the context: he convinced himself he was great before ever actually being so, and his playing never progressed. A caveat for all musicians: NEVER let your mouth try to accomplish what your ears should be doing. If you have to convince someone you're good rather then let your playing do the talking, you may not belong there yet. Don't take this as a diss or hate (well, maybe a diss, but definitely not hate, as I genuinely want every musician to excel in their craft), I just wish he would play more than he talks. Maybe, just maybe, he might actually become half as good as he says he is, and that wouldn't be half bad. And at that point, he would actually be able to hear it.

You could sit Pete Best on a drum kit and ask him to play for 19 hours and he'd put his head down and do it. He'd drum like a dream with real style and stamina all night long, and that really was The Beatles' sound, forget the guitars. I was amazed when they replaced him. I even thought about learning guitar so he could be the drummer in my band. The Beatles didn't hate Pete Best, but they didn't want to be outshone by their drummer. Ringo was a good drummer but he was more ordinary."* - Chris Curtis, drummer for The Searchers, a great Liverpool band who scored a 1964 Top 3 Hit in the US charts with their classic, "Love Potion # 9". Chris saw Pete Best play many times in both Hamburg and Liverpool during Pete's two years as The Beatles' drummer.
