Been waiting for this review for a while! Rubber Soul is one of the hardest Beatles albums to rank for me, because in my estimation, it is also one of their best. I really enjoyed your previous video ranking The Beatles previous album Help!, and just like Shawn, it is an album that really shines for me and has grown in stature over time. That being said, however, in terms of albums I would have to still rank Rubber Soul a tier higher in overall consistency and sophistication but do believe the very best tracks on Help! rival those of Rubber Soul's without a doubt. One of the things I love most about Beatles ranking lists is that every fan has different favourites and for different reasons for those favourites, whether for subjective or nostalgic reasons. I would love to compare a ranked list with my dad, who's also a big Beatles fan and see where our tastes and choices differ. Rubber Soul is a special album for me because it was the first Beatles album I ever heard from top to bottom and made me an immediate life long fan. Although my feelings on some songs have changed their ranking order over time, and a few of the tracks might be considered by many lower tier in quality to the absolute standouts, Rubber Soul is still an engaging listen from start to finish and all the tracks feel like they belong. All the best albums by any artist will always have certain songs that will rank as highlights and be among your favourites, while others would be your second or third by default, but I believe what's most important is how the total album makes you feel, how the sequencing of the album flows, and how the valleys in the listening experience only make the peaks that much grander. Not every scene in a great film can be "the best part" and the same is true of a great album. The merit lies in the totality of the piece and how many diamonds you find on the way. My List: This was hard one. Basically my Top Ten are all songs I truly love and could almost put in any order and consider them all top tier highlights...but when I put on the record, my Top 3 are the nucleus of the album (for me) in terms of sequencing, and the songs that I always look the most forward to hearing in a row: Girl-I'm Looking through You-In My Life. 14. What Goes On 13. Wait 12. Michelle 11. If I Needed Someone 10. Run For Your Life 9. The Word 8. You Won't See Me 7. Think For Yourself 6. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) 5. Drive My Car 4. Nowhere Man 3. I'm Looking Through You 2. Girl 1. In My Life Question for you guys- If you were to resequenced the album, discarding your bottom 2 tracks and in their place adding Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out, would Rubber Soul have the same or a higher ranking for you? That would be an interesting discussion...and I've often wondered that about Revolver with regards to the inclusion of Paperback Writer and Rain in placement of two of my least favourites from that album. Would it add more to an already great album or is it all subjective? Either way, your next video on Revolver will be a doozy! Thanks for the content, fellas!

For sure replacing with Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out raises it to a 9.5 for me (Shawn). Revolver is going to be great. I gotta tell you Graydon, I answer all of our comments on here. At the end of the year KZbin analytics tells you how many comments you replied to, as you have probably noticed I reply to EVERY comment on our channel and last year that was nearly 16,000! Not sure how much longer I can keep that up as we continue to grow but this comment is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent, and just spot on comments we have ever had. Really appreciate the time you put into it!

@@ReactionsToTheClassics That's kind of you to say, Shawn! I really love your channel and am glad you are growing and doing well. I've always loved the father/son dynamic you have on your channel and your deep takes on all the music you hear for the first time or revisit again with new insights. My dad and I are big vinyl fans and love having the same kind of discussions with him, so your content really speaks to me. Always happy to comment and to watch what you put out. Keep up the great work, and I will keep my eyes peeled for your Revolver discussion.

Hey Guys. Love what you do. I’ve been listening to this album for over 50 years. I first saw this album when my uncle bought it upon returning from Vietnam. This was probably 66/67 ish. I wasn’t sure it was The Beatles, the album cover images were stretched out abit and didn’t include the words “The Beatles”...I was confused. Love your interpretations and reviews. Your perspectives are refreshing and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. We are similar in our views on the stronger cuts. I do however think “Think for yourself” is maybe the best, the fuzz is extraordinary, especially for that time. Thank you, keep up the good work!

My ranking for Rubber Soul (which by the way, is up there as my favorite Beatles albums) is this: 14. Wait 13. What Goes On 12. You Won't See Me 11. Run For Your Life 10. The Word 9. Michelle 8. Drive My Car 7. Girl 6. I'm Looking Through You 5. Nowhere Man 4. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) 3. Think For Yourself 2. If I Needed Someone 1. In My Life P.S., I've heard the version of I'm Looking Through You on Anthology 2, and it surprises me that you guys left out in your review of the album over a year ago, is that Take 1 of it was going to originally be the master take until it was superseded a couple weeks later (Take 4) when the two 'Why, tell me why' choruses were added.

Shawn and Trey, I like the photos and film footage and facts you share. Wow, Rubber Soul sold over a million copies in 9 days. That's awesome especially in the mid '60's. I agree that if the double A single was added to this album it would have elevated the quality ,of this album. This is the first Beatles album as a whole that show the Beatles maturity in their songwriting and musicianship. Rubber Soul is an introspective and philosophical musical journey.It is a blend of Pop Rock and Folk. Let me say that this is my personal favorite Beatles album. Actually I read that George Harrison said this is his favorite Beatles album. Even Brian Wilson said this is the best album he ever heard, at least up ,to that time and the album that motivated Wilson to write Pet Sounds.I would like to share a story. This goes way back in either 1966 or 1967. We had a few Beatles albums but not Rubber Soul. Our cousin had Rubber Soul, and so one day our cousin invited us to his house to listen to the album. He had a stereo Hi Fi console record player. We also had the same record player at our house but we didn't have Rubber Soul. Lol So my brother and I and our cousin sat down in the living room and had our first listening party as we listened to the whole album. We were about 7 or 8 years old and I remember that we were mesmerized by this album and already at that young age understand the greatness and quality of Rubber Soul. This was the American Capital album which is slightly different from the U.K. release. The opener is I've Just Seen A Face, and it became my favorite Beatles song at that time, and I can see why you said Shawn that this is your favorites song if I remember correctly from your Help ranking video. This is a wonderful childhood memory that I wanted to share. You guys made accurate and spot on descriptions of each song. You have excellent understanding of the music and lyrical quality of these songs. I must admit, I agree with Makinsey on liking the beep beep part in Drive My Car. It adds to the Pop sound. I agree with a lot of your rankings. Your rating of 9.0 is solid but I would rate it a 9.5. You guys did a great job, but again you didn't mention who gets the MVP. Is it John or Paul ? My guess is John, but Paul can also earn that title. Here is my ranking. 14 What Goes On Cool little Pop Rock tune with nice lead guitar. Ringo sings it cool 13 Run For Your Life Dark lyrics but bright melody with excellent lead guitar and rhythm guitar John's vocal is great 12 Michele A simple love song with a haunting melody. Voted song of the year in 1966 at the Grammy Awards 11 Girl Nice ballad in a relaxed tempo, John's vocal is great. 10 The Word Catchy melodic Pop Rock song with great harmonies as John and Paul join forces. Has that unique Beatles sound 9 Drive My Car Catchy way to ,open the album, very cool idea for a Pop Rock song, great lead guitar on the instrumental break 8 Think For Yourself Really great Harrison song, deep lyrics, cool fuzz bass, maturity growth for Harrison 7 Wait An underrated song, great harmonies, really good transitions, cool tune 6 If I Needed Someone Fabulous melody, great lead guitar, great bass, a great groove in the music, a friend I know says this is his favorite Beatles song 5 Norwegian Wood Classic song with storyteller lyrics, classic melody and music, great one from John 4 You Won't See Me I read m that it is considered a well balanced and well constructed Pop Song, great melody, great harmony, solid lyrical writing 3 I'm Looking Through You A super melody, Folk flavor Pop song, mature lyrical writing, the American release has an extended guitar part on the intro 2 Nowhere Man One of the all time classic songs, could it be John was writing about himself ? I love the crisp sound of the lead guitars super melody, I read that some regard this as a greatest song of all time 1 In My Life Many regard this as the greatest song of all time, in fact I read in a poll that it won the title greatest song, John's lyrical writing is poetry set to music, Probably the most introspective song, but there is a controversy on who wrote the music, Paul claims that he wrote most of the music, it appears to be a mystery at the moment

I love this album, the Beatles quickly evolved into making songs more than entertaining. We already saw signs of this on Help. Please, this rejection of Michelle must stop, my list: 14. What Goes On (It's the only song on the album that I don't like, and it's all country music's fault) 13. Run For Your Life (I love this song, especially because of the fast melody and lyrics) 12. Nowhere Man (For many it's one of their favorites, honestly I am not a fan of the harmonies, it's an ok song) 11. If I Needed Someone (Completely catchy, I love the guitar) 10. The Word (It's an amazing song) 9. You Won't See Me (It's very cute and I love its melody) 8. Wait (What a lovely song, I love it at all times) 7. Drive My Car (Harmonies, piano and melody make one amazing song) 6. Think For Yourself (Hugely underrated, it's amazing) 5. I'm Looking Through You (It's very cute) 4. Girl (Another very cute and lovely song) 3. Michelle (I'm sick of the rejection of this song, it's a unique McCartney song, the melody makes it incredible, STOP DESPISING IT) 2. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) (One of the most complex songs, which keeps you trapped at all times, with the guitar, the melody, it's very cute and incredible, it easily enters my top 20 favorite songs of the band) 1. In My Life (But this song enters my top 10, it's very deep and beautiful, surpassing all the songs before made in history. It is very special)

It's not my number one Beatles album and I don't rank albums or songs often because I have found that I have many of both I rank equally. @@ReactionsToTheClassics Lol. A couple of years ago my oldest daughter asked me to send her a list of my top ten Gordon Lightfoot songs. It was torture and I filled a spiral notebook working it out. It looked like I had been making brackets for The NCAA spring madness tournament. I made a list of criteria and used a 1- 5 to score. I was perplexed at the result because the result was not at all what I thought it would be. # 1 turned out to be a song that some people love but not enough to be number one because of the large and excellent songbook Gord has. I think it was because of a couple of lines in the song somehow touch me in a deeply personal level and I've actually felt what he wrote and his singing voice added an extra level of connectivity. Anyway the song is Carefree Highway. The first line for me is powerful. Picking up the pieces of my sweet shattered dream I wonder how the old folks are tonight? Her name was Ann And I'll be damned if I recall her face She left me not knowing what to do Carefree highway Let me slip away on you Carefree highway You've seen better days The morning after blues From my head down to my shoes Carefree highway Let me slip away, slip away on you Turning back the pages to the times I love best I wonder if she'll ever do the same? Now the thing that I call living Is just being satisfied With knowing I got no one left to blame Carefree highway I've got to see you my old flame Carefree highway You've seen better days The morning after blues From my head down to my shoes Carefree highway Let me slip away, slip away on you Searching through the fragments Of my dream shattered sleep I wonder if the years have closed her mind? I guess it must be wanderlust or trying to get free From the good old faithful feeling we once knew Carefree highway Let me slip away on you Carefree highway You've seen the better days The morning after blues From my head down to my shoes Carefree highway Let me slip away, slip away on you Let me slip away on you Carefree highway I've got to see you my old flame Carefree highway You've seen better days The morning after blues From my head down to my shoes Carefree highway Let me slip away, slip away on you The part that begins with "Searching through the fragments of my dream shattered sleep" and mentions Wanderlust is something I've experienced and felt throughout my life. I have concluded it's because my early life was as an Army brat and my family never stayed more than two years in one place, moving as my father was posted to a new Fort or Military Compound. But I'm no shrink and could be over thinking again. Hahaha.

Those are some great lyrics!!!! And I understand the process is crazy because you feel a responsibility to get it right. When Trey and I compiled the rankings for the Beatles songs overall - lists for each one's lead vocals and then the top 100 Beatles songs we estimate we spent over 20 hours on it. It was a crazy process. So I get you want to get it right!

@@ReactionsToTheClassics 20 hours is a long time and impressive. It took me two weeks and thinking back I spent nearly 35 hours. I went through his entire discography that I could find( 276) songs including a few that he covered by various artists. Those were eliminated quickly and also a few rare songs I'd never heard. In the end I learned more about Mr. Lightfoot and his writing process. I thought I knew almost all that could be known because of my 49 year love affair with this man. Lol. 😆

@@ReactionsToTheClassics I've had time to reflect. And I realize that the thing that makes Rubber Soul so iconic is the lyrics of the songs. I was 16 when "Rubber Soul" was released in the US, so for me, the US version is what the album is. It is more of a folk-rock album than the British version and perhaps because I grew up with it, the album is more coherent and flows more as a complete album than the British version. I know, some great songs were left off our version, but those songs were available later and leaving them off makes the album easier to define. The facial expressions of the Beatles on the cover represents the mood of the American album. "We Can Work It Out" was perfect for our album and should have been on it. The opening song on our version, "I've Just Seen A Face", sets the tone for the entire album. Acoustic guitar and tambourine are featured on our album. The British version of "I'm Looking Through You" just isn't complete without the double false start and background sounds of a tape being rewound. And while some don't like it, I love the stereo on our version with backing track on the left an vocals and added instrumental overdubs on the right. I learned how the Beatles built and recorded their songs by listening to this album. How many hours I lay on the floor with my head between the two speakers! I won't try to rate the songs in order, but I will say that in 1965 "I'm Looking Through You" was my favorite. No telling how many times I listened to that. Today I recognize the brilliance and the feeling of "In My Life", maybe their best song ever. Still, I would rather listen to the snappy "Looking Through You" 20 times in a row than "My Life". The former is an upper, the latter a bit of a downer if you let it get you nostalgic about times gone by. "I've Just Seen a Face" is a simple yet fun tune to listen to, and belongs in the top half of songs on the album. A song I did not fully appreciate until CDs came out (because of the better bass sound and dynamic range on the CD) is "You Won't See Me". The bass on that song is some of Paul's best work that does not often get mentioned. "Girl" and "Its Only Love" round out my favorites on the album. The opening guitars (at least 3) really get me primed for the vocals to begin on "Its Only Love".
@ReactionsToTheClassics
@ReactionsToTheClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Ya it is really weird when we look at those albums in retrospect with different track listings. Totally get your perspective, for us the Beatles never intended the US versions to be like they are so the UK versions are what we go with, those were the true albums and the US versions were really compilations that Capitol put together

Good video guys. Many people compare Beach Boys' Pet Sounds to Sgt. Peppers but I think Rubber Soul is a better comparison in terms of the coherence of the tracks and of course the musicality. Easily, In My Life is my Top #1 as well. Nowhere Man is not in my regular playlist but I think it's one of the most important Beatles' Tracks. Overall, great rankings from both of you. In the meantime, here's my reverse-order Rubber Soul Top Five in the wake of the listening party below: v) In My Life iv) I'm Looking Through You iii) You Won't See Me ii) Think For Yourself i) Nowhere Man I know, I know...In My Life's still a work of genius, but the other four just resonate a little bit more strongly on a personal level for me - especially Think For Yourself, which I used to play to my students back in my teaching days in an effort to encourage independent thought, yes? So annoyed I missed the live Q&A and listening party for this one. Totally forgot about it. Anyway, it's weird, Rubber Soul is not that hard an album to rank despite it being their best album to date. The next one is a whole other story. Anyway, I think most people agree which songs are best and worst (Run For Your Life, Wait, The Word and What Goes on are obviously among the weaker tracks and I can't argue with your top 4 either) but it's slightly more difficult around the middle. I really enjoy both of George's tracks but they would both be closer to the bottom for me - I'm with Trey, though, on Thin For Yourself - because George isn't quite there just yet. Drive My Car is loads of fun but I would also have it closer to the bottom. I love Michelle so it would be quite high up but it is easily one of Paul's least sincere ballads as it's basically just a formal exercise rather than anything else. You Won't See Me and I'm Looking Through You are two of Paul's most underrated Beatles songs so they're both near the top for me. Also, interesting that lyrically, they are clearly linked to For No One on the next album. Anyway... this is the first one that I'm actually ranking so let's see how that goes. This is just off the top of my head, though. 14. What Goes On 13. The Word 12. Wait 11. Run For Your Life (I enjoy this one way more than I should) 10. Drive My Car 9. If I Needed Someone 8. Think For Yourself 7. Michelle 6. You Won't See Me 5. Girl 4. I'm Looking through You 3. Norwegian Wood 2. Nowhere Man 1. In My Life This is a nice step forward for Paul and George but, for my money, forget Plastic Ono Band, this is the best John Lennon album ever. It's the last one on which he would dominate (and probably the last one I would personally vote for him as VIP) but, man, this is John at his peak on every possible level. Also, I often mention the terrible jobs done with the studio versions of most Beatles albums but this one is the worst. And that's for both stereo versions! This and Revolver really need that Sgt Pepper remix. On the other hand, it's a brilliant way to test that both your speakers work perfectly because if they don't, half of this album is just completely gone! Overall grade: If it's not a 10, it's close enough that you may as well round it up. The worst songs are still good and the best are among the greatest songs ever written.

I agree with Shawn that Help! is the more consistent album, and has a greater warmth and spontaneity, although Rubber Soul shows increasing maturity, and is more textured. "What Goes On" is probably weaker than anything on Help!, and that could also possibly go for "Run For Your Life", too. The latter is catchy, but it tends to wear thin pretty quickly. The absolute highs are the John tracks, "Norwegian Wood", "Nowhere Man"(love the backing vocals on this one as well as John's lead vocal) and "In My Life". Paul's "You Won't See Me" and "I'm Looking Through You" are probably his best. George's "Think For Yourself" and "If I Needed Someone" both show a certain maturity in his songwriting, and the lyrics seem a little more complex. "Michelle", I could probably take or leave, and "Drive My Car" is an OK rocker, but not one i'd be reaching for in a hurry. "The Word" and "Wait" represent more of the older Beatles style harmonies, and both work well, if not quite belonging to the highlights. Rubber Soul, apart from the odd track like "What Goes On" (which I don't think should have been included), does show a more consistent maturity, but i do think at times it lacks a bit of the old sparkle. The album has to be heard in mono, because I find the stereo mix, with the huge separation between instrumentation and vocals, quite unbearable.

I don't know what's wrong with me but I've always thought that this was the Beatles' worst album. "Worst" may be too strong a word, because it's definitely not bad. But I just find it......dare I say, a bit boring? I like their early rock period and their late experimental period. The middle period is just a bit bland, I think. Mid-tempos, subdued melodies and vocals. That said, I do like "Drive My Car" and "The Word". The latter of which is interesting in the way it clashes major and minor keys together. And "In My Life" is nice if a bit depressing. But the rest? A half-step up from filler. Even "Beatles for Sale" contains more pearls than this one.

Love your work and the unique father and son hosting combo. Your comments were mostly spot on (although Rubber Soul is WAY better than help IMO!). Here's my list: 1. In My Life 2. Nowhere Man 3. Norwegian Wood 4. I'm Looking Through You 5. Michelle 6. Drive My Car 7. Think For Yourself 8. Girl 9. If I Needed Someone 10. You Won't See Me 11. Wait 12. What Goes On 13. The Word 14. Run For Your Life Looking forward to your Revolver rankings. Keep up the good work, guys.

Because that is where we think it belongs as we explained and as we explain in depth in the track by track review of this album. One of those things we can all agree to disagree.

All Beatles songs weren't created equal, some were more equal than others, but there's never a worst or best Beatles song. They could have sung the yellow pages

Actually there is for sure worst to best. Every once in a while we get this nonsensical theory. If something is the best then something is the worst, it is simple logic. Doesn't mean it is bad but it absolutely a truth. We believe The Beatles are the best ever BUT if one takes the perspective that every single song they ever did was great then you lost all credibility. Thanks Colin.

lol oh we can and we did. We the love the Beatles, obviously with the amount of content we have and time we have spent on it BUT if you love every single thing an artist does that is great but you can't be taken seriously objectively.

Michelle did not deserve the eleventh position. It should be on the third position in my opinion..

That is the beauty of music Mark. Songs mean different things to different people, just because I don't like a song doesn't mean it doesn't have a huge significance to you. Nothing like music man!

In 1965 people didn't get upset by "Run For Your Life" lyrics. People understood that the Beatles were just joking around. Nobody was woke back then, and didn't take everything seriously.

You did pay attention to what we said John himself said about it? Was John "woke" in the 60's? Come on Michael go troll somewhere else.
