This song is about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi the Beatles spiritual guru when they went to India in 1968. At first they thought that he had supernatural powers but soon realized he was a con man and a fake. As the lyrics say "What have you done, you've made a fool of everyone."
@beatlebrian44043 жыл бұрын
Yes you'll right, apparently Lennon still wanted to record the song as "Maharishi" but when lawyers pointed out, that the record company could be sued, he change the title

Peter. You are thinking of "Everybody"s Got Something To Hide Sept Me & My Monkey". Sadie is about, Mia Farrow's sister. They had been in in India & she would not come out & join in ! This song made her come out finally. It was 1968 not 65. Maharishi kept saying "Come On Come On. Another hit for John.

'Just John and a backing band and he loved it that way'...I've been listening to the 1971 Rolling Stone interview and that's essentially John's take on the White Album sessions. To me there's something more metaphysical than that going on with the brilliant tracks on that record perfectly reflecting the turbulent millieu of 1968 in which they were laid down.
@dantofthegenxfamily95293 жыл бұрын
Metaphysical, hmm if you are open minded enough, John's no 9 on the White Album. It turns out John's spirit has lived 9 lives on earth,, according to his response se in a spirit box interview. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioealKiKZdafi68

This album was when they were in top form, musically, having the advantage of their past experiences, and their growing awareness of the world. As well as becoming more unique, each in their own way. That showed in the White Album, as each song was pretty much written by one or the other in the group.

John wrote "Maharishi" on the flight out of India in a pique over the alleged advances made by the Maharishi directed towards one of the women in the Ashram retreat. George pleaded with John on the plane to change the name. John said 'change it to what' and George came up with 'Sexy Sadie'. The allegations were unfounded and it is believed they were manufactured by Magic Alex to get John infuriated enough to leave India. No woman has ever came forward to substantiate said rumor. This was in 1968 Cymdy. Take care Hun, RNB

At that time. And I'm sure now. People were put on pedestals. And maharishi yogi was one of them. And with The Beatles endorsement. That just gave him a higher level. Well, whether true or not about the episode with the young lady. Just shows we're all human. We all have to put on pants pretty much the same.

You do good homework on this stuff. I knew John felt conned in India. I'm pretty sure John and Cynthia were married.
@Jonni10273 жыл бұрын
Yes they were married then. In fact on the way to their trip to India the Beatles with all of their wives were running to catch their train and Cynthia couldn’t keep up so unfortunately she got left behind in the crowd on the platform. She eventually caught up in another train. I saw when she missed that train on a Beatles documentary and I felt sorry for her. I figured it was maybe indicative of their relationship at the time, that she often got “left behind”☹️.

Charlie Manson named one of his girls, Sadie, after this song. Charlie thought the Beatles were prophets telling him to do bad things in preparation of a race war (called helter skelter) between black and white where black would win while Charlie and his cult hid in the desert of S. California (fixing a hole) to become rulers after black won helter skelter. In Charlie's racist view, black were incapable of ruling post helter skelter and needed the only white man left, Charlie himself, to rule. This and more are in the book, Helter Skelter, and the movie from the book.

@thomastimlin17242 жыл бұрын
Lennon wrote this as an expression of his disappointment the Maharishi Yogi, whom the Beatles spent the winter of 1968 with in India entitled "Maharishi" and not "Sexy Sadie." At the last minute he chickened out and changed it to Sexy Sadie and probably a small amount of lyrical changes. Just substitute Maharishi for Sexy Sadie as you listen and you'll see. Ringo's opening drum lick on this and other Beatles recordings everyone has copied since, thinking they invented it while practicing with the garage band lol. Stupid...
