Well A, John’s performance can be chalked up to Phil Spector using a take from when the former was still figuring out the song. B, he was on loads of heroin and his interest in the band at that point was at an all-time low and C, The Long and Winding Road is too Sunday Morning-ish. Making a bass line for a song like that is actually very hard. If it’s too melodic, it’ll ruin the actual melody.

@@LeftyBassman The album version of Across the Universe does actually feature bass (likely an upright bass played by the orchestra). If you can’t hear it, it’s especially audible at the end of the song.
