A legendary performance of this song was at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in honor of George Harrison featuring Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne on vocals, Steve Winwood on organ, and Prince on a scorching lead guitar solo. But the highlight of that for me was watching the sheer joy on Dhani Harrison's face as he played acoustic and sang along in tribute to his father.

@@MaunderMaximum Thank you. I adore that version and get so frustrated that everyone recs the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame version. Prince is great technically, but this is not a song for shredding. Clapton understands that and his solos (on the original recording and at the Concert for George) fit the song so much better. My personal favorite, though, is the 1987 Prince’s Trust Concert version which has George singing and trading guitar solos with Clapton, Ringo (and Phil Collins) on drums, Jeff Lynne on rhythm guitar, Elton John on keyboards, and Ray Cooper on percussion. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Znq3o4SOerhrobc. First, as a drummer, you need to listen closely to Ringo's technique. He's a left handed drummer playing a right handed set up. His drumming for each song is all about the song, nothing to put him in the spot light. Second, the guitarist on this album playing the lead is Eric Clapton. Back then, he was know as "God" for his electric rock/blues style. Finally, this song has been covered many times, but you REALLY need to watch/react to Prince's guitar solo at the 2004 RROHF performance; and then you need to watch/react to Peter Frampton's guitar solo (whichever one you choose, but the Festival de Viña 2008 really shows his ability as a showman)

Good choice for a Beatle's reaction as George Harrison shines through as great influence here as well as Here Comes The Sun. A version of this song is on KZbin taken from the memorial concert for George Harrison with a cast of musicians including Tom Petty & Jeff Lynne(to name a few) & with a weeping guitar solo from Prince toward the end! The lyrics of this song are said to have been written to express the disharmony in the group after returning home from India and experiencing Transcendental Meditation.

"Across the Universe" was my fave Beatles song as a kid, but this one has taken over in the last decade or so to my #1 spot. There's a lovely version on the Beatles "Love" album which includes the alternate 3rd verse (with lyrics to make you tear your heart out of your own chest with sorrow) and a full string section accompaniment written by George Martin that is absolutely stunning. And then there's the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame version that features George Harrison's son Dhani that has the most WICKED guitar solo by Prince at the end. It's a whole stage full of geniuses and virtuosi, and they take the song way heavier, but it's gargantuanly transcendent. You should listen to all 3 back-to-back, if not in a reaction, at least on your own time, comparing the differences in 'treatment,' instrumentation/orchestration, tempi, etc! Sort of like an audio triptych. :)

My son is named after George Harrison, and last year on Halloween we spontaneously played this song as a piano/guitar duet because it was the only song we both already knew how to play from memory. We were dressed as Scooby-Doo characters for Halloween and we were recording Scooby-Doo music cues so the camera was already rolling, but we ended up with a genuinely interesting kinda 'lite jazz'/heavier rock version, kinda like putting all the ones mentioned above into a 'blender'. :)

I love this song. It's one of my favourite tracks on "The White Album". I heard an interview with The Beatles long time producer Sir George Martin where he says that for an album named simply "The Beatles" it was the least 'band like' album The Beatles would record. Of the 30 or so tracks on the album there are only about 15 tracks on whch all four of The Beatles appear. Still, one of the most incredible "all killer no filler" albums ever recorded. It was one of the few real bright spots of 1968. As many people have mentioned, George Harrison got his buddy Eric Clapton to play on "While My Guitar Gentely Weeps". The guitar that Eric played on his overdubs was a Gibson Les Paul that Eric had actually given to George as a gift. The guitar had been previously owned by John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful and also by Rick Derringer who had it refinished by Gibson. Derringer had it refinished in an SG red colour before Eric Clapton found it in a New York music store and bought it to give to George Harrison. George gave the guitar the name "Lucy" and it is oneI of the most famous electiric guitars in the world. Another Harrison masterpiece as part of The Beatles is "Here Comes The Sun". Suggestions for George Harrison's solo work would include: "My Sweet Lord" "All Things Must Pass" "Crackerbox Palace" "What Is Life" Eric Clapton "Layla" - As Derek and the Dominos. Must be the long version with Duane Allman's beautiful slide guitar part. "Layla" Acoustic "Unplugged" version "I Shot the Sheriff" (Bob Marley cover) "It's In the Way That You Use It" "Tearing Us Apart" with Tina Turner.. Great song! "If I Had Possesion Over Judgement Day" (Robert Johnson cover) "Promises" with Eric Clapton with Cream: "Badge" "Tales Of Brave Ulysses" "Sunshine Of Your Love" "Strange Brew" Eric Clapton with The Yardbirds: "For Your Love" Eric Clapton is the only artist (so far) to have been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times. As a member of The Yardbirds, as a member of Cream and as a solo artist. He is one of the most influential guitarists in the history of rock music and, along with Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck, is a member of the '60s British Blues "Holy Triumvirate".
