@@michaelturner6425 Zeeland is bit out of the way by Dutch standards, so I guess its possible that some old ladies might wear the traditional stuff in the 1970s when going to town, but its possible they worked as tour guides or it was Easter or something. 1919 Netherlands was still an empire so that is not too crazy. I'd argue that even citizens of classical empires had a higher standard of living than many alive today. Actually, the Roman elite were so wealthy by today's standards they would be trillionairs. In short: decent wealth distribution is apparently very challenging when those trying to figure it out are presently rich themselves.

While life was less complicated, it was also pretty hard. One needed to work hard and stay healthy. There were not that many good medications back then and people could die easily from an infection. Child mortality was also higher back then. All that made for strong, tough and hardened people. But there was also time for play :-)

Thank you for this gem. I can place myself into this reality to feel the atmosphere, & be more intimate with the people; understand their mannerisms. Today we can see ourselves in video & understand what we look like from the outside. This era had no idea what their being looked and sounded like & therefore not so conscientious. Their being was different. They only knew one style, had no television to understand anything different or know what people in other countries even looked like. They were content to match each other to fit in & be the same & didn’t question why. They were educated with only what they knew & didn’t have enough culture or education to fight against it or dress differently. You’d be strange to be different. People co-existed better with less knowledge & one education to care enough to go against the mainstream.

Cities where more beatiful because after the war we were only interested in rebuilding quickly and cheaply because there where many homeless and there was no money due to the war. Before the war we already started building ugly houses, because the Dutch population skyrocketed. On youtube there is a film made by the american goverment called ''Know your ally, The Netherlands'' you can see the rebuilding and de simpler cost effective buildings take shape. They where happier from the tales i hear from the elders around here (i live in Zeeland) People were very friendly, if one man had a machine to plow the ground he went around the village and did that to every front porch, so people could easily grow some extra food. People also traded old stuff like clothing and pans, and traded fish for rabbits, or fruit and veggies depending on what kind of food the men gathered. But the work was very though and people died young to diseases.

@voraciousreader33413 жыл бұрын
That’s not what they were for, at least in the articles I’ve seen. Unless, of course, you have links to prove that they functioned as “sunglasses,” which would only be for peripheral vision. They certainly wouldn’t be at all functional, as a woman looking or walking into the east of a morning would have the sun directly in her eyes, despite her “sunglasses.” It literally takes seconds to verify or discredit our guesses....I’m always amazed when people clothe guesses as facts, without taking a few minutes on the Internet to see if they’re right!
@springkikkertje3 жыл бұрын
Its not a precursor to sunglasses. Me and my ancestors are from zeeland. My grandma once explained that those gold pieces you see were part of the 'oorijzers' . Oor = ear and ijzer = iron. They were used to attach the caps firmly to the head. And the metal pieces on front were for aesthetics, display of wealth, to show which island, polder or village you were from and what religion you had.

Those "oorijzers" are handy, when you're on your moped, to use as rear-view mirrors. No, I'm joking. In our street there was an old woman from Zeeland who wore them as well. They are made of real (thinly plated) gold, and are an indication of how posh you are. it belongs to the "klederdracht", AFAIK only women in Zeeland wore them, not the other provinces (who also all had their own traditional clothes). You have no comprehension of how hard life was then, of how hard people of all ages except the youngest and elderly, especially here, where the sea continually tried to reclaim the land. It’s a filmmaker’s job to make his/her subjects look idyllic, or to idealize them for people who would watch the films.

@@voraciousreader3341 It was harder in some ways, easier in others, and better in almost every way. Did people have to work harder and longer? Yes of course. But not everyone is afraid of hard work.

@@mercster Like Mercster said, some thing were better but the work was insanely tough. Don't expect to reach your 55th birthday back then in Zeeland, you worked until you couldn't go any further and died young. That said, before the Americans liberated Europe, people where way more friendly. Im thankful for their liberation ofcourse (And ofcourse the Canadians and Scottish, they liberated Zeeland) But Americans are more self centered then we where before and we took that habit. Before the Second world war everyone knew everyone, and everyone was friendly, though a bit harsh at times, to one another. Thats something i miss in Zeeland these days, although its still common in the very small villages >500 people

@@qopiqq3629 That has much less to do with Americans than the mass industrialization of Europe and the EU.

Gorgeous footage that vividly shows life in rural northern Europe, a hundred years ago, and a mere year after WWI ended (or as they would have referred to it, The Great War)
@TheStraatjutter4 жыл бұрын
It should be noted however that for the neutral Netherlands ww1 mainly meant mobilisation and a refugee crisis etc. the war didn't leave quite the same mark here as it did over the rest of the future Benelux

Fantastic video. What software do you use? Is it deoldify? Reason I ask is I have some footage of my family in Black and white from 1940s and would like to clean up and colour. Thank you
@Rick888888884 жыл бұрын
Yes DeOldify, but the most important thing is to first enhance the B&W footage which is not so easy. I can restore and colorize your family film at a reasonable price it you are interested: ricksfilmrestoration@gmail.com
