Paul Heaton who wrote most of their songs is superb lyrically. In 1989 "Song for whoever" had the line "I love to write about each wrinkle on your face". In 1994 they released "Prettiest eyes" where the song is someone associating happy memories with their partner with each wrinkle on her face. They also had "One last love song" which was a love ballad which also lamented the fact that all the songs in the charts at the time were love ballads.

The leader of the band, Paul Heaton, is known for very cutting and subversive lyrics, usually accompanied by uplifting music, you should check out his first group The Housemartins ( Happy Hour being a good introduction), the bass player in this group was Norman Cook who morphed into Fatboy Slim

I love them, 0898 is my favorite album, I found it in the discount bin at a record store. It was pure chance and I bought it because it was on discount. Turned into one of my favorite albums.

I hadn't heard this song for years, they definitely had some classics during the 90s britpop era. I would recommend you to listen to Common People by Pulp.

Wow, I have this cd but haven't thought of it in quite a while. If I remember correctly, 36D is also on there. Fun stuff. Also, I always thought the "fuck me" line had the literal meaning, but also had the double meaning of the other woman saying "fuck my life", or "fuck me" in the British sense.

Beautiful South are underrated tbf, maybe not the best to react to but certainly have some great tracks to listen to when going about your day/night. Song For Whoever is my favourite, beautiful song.

This song got censored when it came out, so in the radio/single version Jacqui Abbott sings "Don't marry her, have me". Not quite the same. :) You got to listen to Perfect 10. The studio album version is genious. Incredible beat. Paul Heaton (former The Housenmartin) is a pop song writer/producer genious. Rotterdam is also a great song. Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott still making music, recording and touring together. Paul Heaton discovered Jacqui Abbott in a supermarket overhearing singing. The golden era of The Beautiful South was when she was singing. The two of them is brilliant together.

I've often thought it may be written not from the stance of a third person, wanting to come between the couple, but the earlier version of the wife.... perhaps wanting to avoid before it happens or regretting it all after it became so humdrum..... almost as if to say that there is an alternative version of their life... maybe still? It doesn't make sense to tell a married man who's already well into that life "don't marry her fuck me" as it's already happened "don't stay with her fuck me" would make more sense if it were a third person

I was hoping that you wouldn't review this version, I find the swearing a bit unnecessary and childish. The radio edit version is a classic song.
