I hear that a lot when I talk with some of my friends who are into makeup. Part of it is that most women don't wear dramatic eye looks to the office, or wherever they work. They want something they can do fast and easy that looks good. That is why you see a lot of natural palettes. I hear a lot of the beauty youtubers asking "who asked for this?" when a company comes out with a neutral palette, but as much as I love color, I have a ton of them. Most women don't follow "beauty trends" that change every season as much as the online community does. They're going for something for more classic and that accentuates their features easily.

I bought the original Naked palette back in 2010 or 2011 and I believe it was $44 back then! I remember thinking that was so much at the time. Something I’ve noticed about people who have one eyeshadow palette and no interest in the beauty community is that they want a palette that they can use all of the shadows. I love watching the beauty community but beauty community is more creative. Their “job” is to create great looks that are colorful and more intricate. It’s how we get entertained we like watching them but I don’t think most of try to recreate a look. I’m not surprised at any of these top sellers because most of us have a job where we can’t wear glittery and bright eyeshadow. The reason the beauty community has great comparisons of eyeshadow is because they probably got the shadows in PR. If beauty gurus had to pay for everything they got they would probably buy one of these basic palettes as well because they would want to get their moneys worth.

i think it’s important to keep in mind how many older women buy makeup but aren’t heavily online. older being a relative term and in no way insulting. anyway, there are less beauty influencers that are older and their communities that i’ve seen are smaller + mostly people not constantly online but who check in on occasion. to me it looks like some of these bestseller lists can be explained by 1. people not online all the time so they pick makeup based on friends recommendations and aren’t aware of “scandals” or “drama”. allll the moms (of middle school and older kids) i know use shape tape! 2. older make-up habits like powder foundation. that bare minerals foundation is awesome and so forgiving and it sounds like generations and generations of people have loved it so im not surprised it sells so well. this one maybe has less of an impact but people just get stuck in the makeup habits they learn as teens/young adults so i wouldn’t be surprised if old trends are still popular offline bc of that

Bestsellers are based on total sales, not what is selling the most in a month. Some sites also have “what’s hot” for the week or “trending” sections but the reason why the ones we see on Ulta and Sephora seem surprising is that they’re products that launched years ago. When they came out, beauty KZbin was much more intense and it was extremely profitable back in 2016-2019. The hype for products really helped with getting viewers to buy products and newer launches have slowed, even though we have more options today than back then. The reason those products are still bestsellers is because a lot people restock them because they wear them all the time and they’re easier to gift, which is why so many people will pick them up during the holidays and for birthdays. The beauty community on KZbin still focuses on new launches, hauls and decluttering - people who don’t create content in the beauty space have no reason to buy new products to test, review and compare for value and performance. When they like something they continue to use it until they don’t like it anymore and then get something else that’s similar.

I have Naked 3 and I LOVE it! I overlooked it for a decade. I wanted a rosey palette and was choosing between Natasha Denona Retro, Huda rose quartz and naked 3. Rose quartz was too pink and Retro too red and warm (for me.) I think it sells well because there are so few cool leaning neutral palettes. It looks rosy just like my skin tone. If you get the chance to see it in person you can tell it has quite a bit of depth. That picture does not do it justice. It’s beautiful and very dimensional. I took a picture of it in the car and you can see all the multi color sparkle and it’s very wet looking on and I love that. It wears longer on me than Natasha Denona. I know it has Teflon in the formula. It was my first Urban Decay palette. I bought it just last year. It was over $50. I think it was $54 but I used a $15 off $50 coupon at Ulta. I personally love me a good quad, that's why I like the ones from Charlotte Tilbury and Dior.

I’m on my second ABH Soft Glam palette. Hit pan on my first in nearly every shade, and have huge dips in this one. I have more of the recent “trendy” palettes as well, but SG is my tried and true, ride or die.

As someone working at Ulta, I’ve realized that the average consumer just wants something that works and is reliable consistently. So most people do purchase items that the beauty community might deem “boring” which explains why so many businesses are still business giants, like UD, IT Cosmetics, Benefit, Tarte, Estee Lauder, Lancôme, etc. Whenever someone asks “how are these companies still in business?” it’s because the average makeup consumer just wants a reliable product. You wouldn’t believe how long some people have been purchasing the same products over and over and they are SOOOOO loyal to that list of products.

My bet for the pretty rich palette is that its a good second palette to use with your everyday neutral palette. Lots of fun shimmers that can be used as an accent.

Estee Lauder Double Wear is a great foundation!! I have tons of foundation bottles in my collection (Armani, Nars, MAC, Charlotte Tilbury,...) and I always repurchase Double Wear when it runs out. It is extremely long-lasting, has a great shade range, and even though it is medium-to-full, if you mix it with a moisturizer or a face oil, it can be pretty light and feel like a skin tint that lasts FOREVER. I recommend it to everyone who's not crazy into makeup, but wants to find a good foundation.

MAC Studio Fix is amazing. I am 54 and have been buying it since my 20’s. The way I use it has changed. It comes with a sponge, toss it, it’s useless. Fluffy brush is what you want. It’s brilliantly matte without being flat or drying, works as both a foundation on its own over sunscreen OR you can use it as a setting powder. Plus, it’s portable and costs less than most liquid foundations.

One can get MAC at Macy's, and I do most of my makeup shopping at Macy's. My point being that Sephora and Ulta are great starting points to understand the industry, but they're not the full picture.

Tarte in bloom is my HG every day palette! I have purchased 3 and panned 2 of them. It has the basics I need when I use more exciting palettes or singles. It has perfect versatile mid tones and highlights. UD basic has also been a HG for me. I remember it being $28. I have repurchased and gifted it to family. The key to a best seller: user friendly and versatile.

I still use and love the Tarte in Bloom palette. I find cool-ish toned neutral palettes are still rare at Sephora, they all seem to lean heavy on the warm side.

Tartlette in bloom is solid - it is the only truly neutral palette I own because I'm a colour lover, but if I want a basic neutral eye look, it's just so easy. Has a row of cooler tones, yellow tones and warmer tones. Goes light to dark. The subdued shimmers don't give fallout and never give wrinkly eyelid texture. My palette is old and still performs like new and smells of amazing vanilla (makes me happier than I thought it would). I wear 'in bloom' every time I visit my grandma because she's more into that than my acid greens and multichromes 😹

I bought the ABH soft glam palette when it launched and it still to this day is my most reached for palette, it’s so versatile! It was actually my first full size palette. I’ve accumulated a bunch of palettes over the years since then, and for the average consumer such as myself, you might just stop buying once you have enough. So as much as I’ve been tempted by newer popular products, I don’t need them and don’t usually buy them. And ABH soft glam seems perfect as a “starter” palette. So I’m kinda not surprised it’s still a best seller

Also, these names were so huge at a time when beauty gurus were all the rage... Maybe even people that really don't follow amd don't care were exposed to certain palettes and when they look for new makeup, they go for what looks familiar and they remember hearing good things about. You say the beauty community hates that stuff but it's mostly forgotten stuff that they used to be obsessed with at the time, before moving on. Don't underestimate how disconnected from the beauty discourse these consumers can be. Something tells me they're not exactly Zoomers either 😅

Love Tartelette in Bloom. I bought it in a time when I was going through a big (positive)change in my life so it has nostalgia for me. It’s also supremely practical and cruelty free.

The Tartelette In Bloom is The GOAT! I’ve repurchased this palette over and over. I have plenty of other formulas (including Natasha Denona) and none compare. The colors are what they are - no surprises when applied. To be clear, I have tried other Tarte palettes that are not as good but this one is amazing.

A lot of these products are things that us over 40s have worn for years and swear by. We have a lot of buying power but we're not considered trend setters

I have a hefty collection but the tartelette palette is the one I get the most use out of by a landslide and one of only 3 palettes I keep in my everyday makeup drawer. I think the matte formula is great but definitely could have better lasting power

The "beauty community" also does not review many waterproof products. These are essential for people wearing makeup to work.

What my friends & I want is stuff that makes us look better without drawing attention and fast and easy. Work appropriate. Once we find what works we don’t stray because we just aren’t interested in buying something different and learning it. I enjoy trying new stuff but these older products remain in my stash, repurchasing regularly while the “better” stuff gets decluttered (yup Natasha D x 2-gone) because I don’t really use the heavier eye looks. Lol when I hear my beauty KZbinrs rave about the rich saturated colour payoff in a new eye palette -I make a note to avoid that! 😂

Would you please make another video elaborating on the “better formula” palettes you would recommend for the ones you talked about in this video? For example, you mentioned that you could think of similar palettes as Tartlette Bloom, but with better formulas. I’m curious which alternate palettes you would recommend. Thanks!

I can explain Too Faced Natural Matte palette. I still have the original, and I was eyeing the new formulation when it came out. But I talked myself out of it. Barely. It's a perfect "date night" palette. It creates perfect "pretty" smoky eye without being too dark. You can blend it out or make it darker. You can be sure that you won't have to re-do your makeup. One more important point: this eyeshadow formula doesn't make my eyes water, so I can blend to my heart's content.

Fellow powder foundation lover here, I love seeing that powder foundation is more popular than the beauty community thinks. Powder foundation is so much more flattering and versatile for every day wear than liquid foundation. All these big eyeshadow palettes being bestsellers is so surprising to me, does anyone every use them up? Or do they just buy a new one after a few years when they're expired?
