I felt the same thing. I saw Parasite before The Handmaiden and I was like: "The handmaiden is clearly above in all sides and deserves a lot more attention than Parasite ". Even if both are clearly great movie, Handmaiden is special, very special, like a master piece. When someone is talking about both movies it I defend The Handmaiden easily so it has arguments.

This is the first lesbian film that I've actually deeply liked. The others I have seen (Carol, Blue is the Warmest Color...) didn't stir half as much feelings as this one did. And it was directed by a man! Usually, I find it questionable when straight men make gay films, _especially_ lesbian ones--but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Chan-wook Park understood what he needed to understand in order to make this film.
@LaurianeG.4 жыл бұрын
I'm usually not one to compare too much adaptations, but I sincerely think the original graphic novel of Blue is the Warmest Color is 100000x better. Tough I think as far as feminine love movie goes, Portrait of a Lady on Fire absolutely deserves mention. I'm also personally a big fan of Bound (which is possibly my favourite of the sister's filmography), tough I guess it's not so much *about* homosexuality than featuring a lesbian couple? (although..... you got a story of a woman trying to break free from an abusing man, so there are feminist themes?)

Director Park has been working with screenwriter Seo-kyung Jung since the making of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. They share one computer and write the scenario for his films together. Ever since Jeong started to take part in Park's filmmaking process, his films have developed a deeper understanding of women's emotions and I am so glad they work marvelously well as a team.

Park Chan-wook is a visionary director whose work I admire greatly. Among his oeuvre, The Handmaiden stands out to me as one of the most remarkable films of 2016. Some may argue that the film's male gaze is problematic, but I believe that it serves a crucial purpose in portraying the erotic and fetishized world of the film. The characters' sexual encounters are heightened to the level of pornography, but they are not gratuitous. Instead, they serve as a means for the characters to connect with one another and escape from their oppressive lives. The Lady hideko who has spent her life being used for sexual purposes, finds a way to express herself and feel something real through her sexual encounters with her female lover Sooke. The sex scenes in The Handmaiden are shot in an intensely eroticized manner, but they also come from a place of love and emotional connection. The characters use the Lady's perception of sex as a tool to express their tenderness and affection for one another. The film's layers of pretense and deception make it a game within a game, and the sexual encounters are a part of that. But they are not just another layer of deceit; they are an integral part of the story's structure and themes. Park Chan-wook is a genius director who imbues every element of his films with meaning and purpose In this cinematic masterpiece, every element has a profound and poignant significance that resonates with the audience. Among the plethora of themes woven into the film's intricate fabric, the portrayal of explicit sexual content stands out as a notable component, depicted through the use of pornographic texts and graphic sex scenes. In the initial stages of the movie, as Hideko and Sooki indulge in intimacy for the first time, the scene evokes imagery reminiscent of the artful yet raw elements characteristic of the pornographic genre. However, as the narrative unfolds, the intricate and nuanced depiction of their intimacy transcends mere physicality and paves the way for a transformative and meaningful relationship between them. The extended sex scene in the latter half of the movie is a testament to this evolution, showcasing a profound and beautiful connection between the two characters that extends beyond the physical. Additionally, the library scene serves as a catalyst for this metamorphosis, offering a glimpse into the depth of affection and devotion shared between the two protagonists. Through this poignant scene, the audience is privy to the characters' profound emotions, gaining insight into the depth of their love and care for one another. In summary, this cinematic masterpiece weaves together myriad themes, including the exploration of sexual content in a profound and nuanced manner, that culminates in a transformative and meaningful portrayal of the central relationship. The library scene stands out as a significant turning point, offering a glimpse into the characters' profound emotions and underscoring the depth of their affection for one another. Throughout the film, we see men using women in various ways, treating them as objects rather than people. But in contrast, the two lead characters truly love each other and use their bond to escape from the male-dominated world that surrounds them. The bells that feature prominently in the film's climactic scene represent the male characters' attempts to control the Lady's sexuality, but they ultimately become a symbol of pleasure and love between the two female characters. The Handmaiden's complex, layered story is conveyed through masterful direction, music, and cinematography. The film's twists and turns are unexpected yet satisfying, and the river-like flow of the story creates a soothing, sweet, and beautiful atmosphere. The romantic drama of the film is "Spellbindingly Beautiful" and "mesmerizing", and the characters lies to one another create a thrilling experience. Overall, The Handmaiden is a brilliantly crafted, complex film that tells its story in the best possible way. It takes a second viewing to fully appreciate all its nuances and layers, but it is well worth the effort. I rate it 4.5/5, and I consider Park Chan-wook to be one of the greatest directors of our time.

Sometimes I wonder about the period fashion in this film. The story sets in 1930s but Lady Hideko was seen wearing clothes from the 1910s in most of the house scenes. Does it refers to the fact that she never leave the house since she came to Korea? Hence she was outdated about the fashion at that time. Even though at dinner she was seen wearing typical 1930s/late 1920s evening dress and hairdo.
