For me, the best thing about Shinkai's animation is that he manages to transmit the "feeling of a scene". The sunlight is draw in a way in which you can feel it's heat, the rain in a way in which you can feel the humidity and even the smell of it, and so on. Mitusha was lost and felt the sense of longing and missing piece in life for 8 years while Taki's for 5 years. They have forgotten the beautiful moments they have shared together. They have forgotten the series of phenomenons they went through. But one thing's for sure, their connection never fully vanished. It stayed within them. They just don't know what kind of connection and where is that connection. They do not know where to find the missing piece they keep on feeling. For 5 and 8 years of their lives, they have lived a life with longing, missing, broken, puzzle. At the end, the search is over. They finally found one another. They must have really forgotten the moments they shared together before but what's important is the sense of longing has finally stopped when they finally found each other.
