For me, the way I describe Makoto Shinkai as an artistic legend is how the movies are about love having no boundaries. Love is Timeless with no specific Place (Kimi No Nawa), Love knows no age (Garden of Words), No matter the weather (Weathering With You), and No matter what circumstance (Suzume). tbh as years go by the work quality of makoto shinkai is inconsistent in the sense a director of his caliber is not delivering because the expectations are always peak, to me garden of words, 5cm per second and your name was his best work and will always continue to be unless he pulls something out of the hat!! The reason why I like garden of words and 5cm per sec very much is because it’s simply blunt realistic harsh realities of life and garden of words emphasis on loneliness and a difference a person can make. Shinkais work after your name is kinda huh? Weathering with you felt like a lazy writing but was covered by osts and beautiful animations but don’t let it distract u away from the fact the movie was simply trying to ride on the success of your name, weathering w you almost all people like but it’s his most messy word regardless of how people conceive it, Suzume was better than weathering with you and mainly it emphasises on the lives lost due to disasters etc and shinkai fairly made a nice work out of it with a romantic subplot. Shinkai has smmm caliber and a mediocre film is simply not acceptable out of him, main reason why I say this is because of his past works it was lively af and conveyed more than any filmmaker ever could, shinkai would be praised as modern miyazki when his career concludes.
